RAGE Chronicles 2008 - Data Cards

I am noticing a trend upwards in points for most of the new datacards. It looks like folks will have to increase their game sizes to keep the same approximate model counts...or stop fielding their Thunderbird's and Emperors.

I think this is the case in general as well. Just as a side note, I had an army mapped out using all of my models with the old cards and it was just short of 5K. I added up the same models and units with the new rules and the new list was 7 whole points higher. I think for me it was because I have a fair amount of infantry, who dropped in cost. Nevertheless, I think that the points might encourage a different setup of troops, but it is possible for game sizes to stay at around the same level.

Ooh ooh I didn't even notice the drop in the cost of infantry. Sweet.

Well, i have to admit the stat card for the Emporer is just kinda stpid ridiculous in my opinion. I know i have played with Rhinos for a while and so some people will roll their eyes at my opinion. But thats my opinion.

I have no problem with the high RAV.

I have a problem with a high RAV that doesnt drop til its on track 15.

The Rhino was always tough. but it goes down at a decent pace as you hit it.

No wonder you wanted to wait and post these cards last.

I think the Emperor not having Blaster kinda balances the two models. You have a better chance for the one shot kill with the Rhino.

Yes, we expected points to go up on most of the models. While we lowered the cost and/or popularity of some SAs and DV, we knew that the RAV increase most models got would mean they would become more expensive. Since game sizes are really a matter of semantics, we didn't let that affect our course of action. I'd rather have to say that average game sizes are 3500 points now, rather than have not addressed the issues we felt needed it.

I did not mean to say that point escalation is a bad thing. I was just pointing out the trend, in case anyone had missed it. I do not really care what point level I play at, only at how it fits into my time available and how the gameplay scales to said size.

Towards the Emperor, I am not yet sold on it. I know it is ungodly powerful, but it is no more durable than it used to be and now costs over 700 points. I think it now makes for an interesting comparison to the Rhino. I have generally felt that the Rhinos were under-priced. But this new Emperor finally gives a superior benchmark to evaluate them against and we see a little point separation between the "light" super-heavies and the huge super-heavies.

Any answer on the logic behind the Dragonfly?

Of course I don't have any kind of answer, but when I saw the model for the Dragonfly and then the data card my second impression (first was just digging the concept and the sculpt) was that a whole bunch of them would = a lot of punch for a little cost. With 6 Dragonflies holding position and target locking it was 6 attacks at RAV 6 and 6 at RAV 4, all with 36" range bands and at least 12 damage tracks (probably more due to the overkill that results from making sure a target is dead), all for 486 pts.

All of this is a great big cheeseball, I admit, and I didn't end up buying more than the two, but esp. with the new higher RAV I think the higher cost seems justified. In the end, I would rather it stayed at 81 points, and had a wimpy little LBG or even an MG so that using FIST and CFP would become its primary purpose (I still see two of these firing at base RAV 5 and 3 to be a good cleanup crew).

I'd rather they drop the CFP--as I said earlier, it is only usable if you put the Dragonfly into a Specialist section containing Fire Support models. Thus, you basically can never field more than one without losing points on the CFP (and, now that it's the only two-track model in the game, you are going to lose them). It also precludes them being used in a Recon-Flight section, which they were superb for before.

You are right on about the Dragonfly. I completely spaced on the fact that CFP only works w/in the section. Since our purpose was to make it a recon/forward observer type model, we'll probably end up just removing the CFP.

As for the Emperor, its GRC's should have Blaster. I haven't had time to look over all of the new cards as Pat's been posting them, but that will definately be one thing that will be getting added.

Yes, Blaster would increase its points slightly, but I have no idea how much.

So it seems that the Emperor has gone from the weakest of the super-heavies to the best of the general combat models. Quite the leap. I may even have to buy one now.

It may now be the hardest hitting of the Super Heavies, but its by no means the most sturdy.

When MLH redesigned the data cards for CAV 2, he gave each faction a "blueprint" if you will. A template of strengths and weaknesses that each faction's models should have applied to them. Unfortunately, at some point during the process, he wandered off of the path. Most of the models followed the blueprints as they should, but a few weren't so good.

Some models had the weaknesses, but not the strength. The Emperor had the Rach's low DV, reduced weapons range and improved speed, but not the extra firepower it should have had. That has now been fixed. It also seemed fitting that the only two Gauss Rotary Cannons in the game should also both have blaster.

Some of the models had their faction's strength, but not the weaknesses. In the case of the Dictator '60, Vanquisher and Tyrant, they had the improved speed and (after our errata) improved firepower, but did not have the weaker DV that KODA models were supposed to have. That is why they were changed in RC08.
