Dungeon Encounters

Recommended Posts

Over the next 1-2 weeks, I will be putting together a document of 1-2 dozen datacards for Dungeon Encounters. This is to provide stats for the large Dark Heaven models that don't have stats, so people can use them in dungeon crawl Warlord scenarios. These are not meant to be taken in a Warlord army, but simply meant to populate a dungeon for scenario play that requires dungeon encounters (i.e. if this document provides a datacard for the DHL 2794, that doesn't mean you can take one in your Dwarf army).

I'm planning for the final document to also include datacards from RC08 for monsters that could be found in a dungeon crawl (like dire bears and minotaurs).

So if you're interested, please post below with what dungeon monster(s) you'd love to see get a Warlord datacard, and what general attributes you think it should have.

For example, you could post something like:

DHL 0355 Giant Spiders

Fairly fast MOV w/Improved Charge, 2 attacks w/ poison strike

3-4 tracks, around 50-60 points

or maybe something like:

DHL 02877 Mountain Troll

High MAV w/ critical strike

6-7 tracks, around 200 points

03180: Cadirith

Poison strike, a hideous MAV and lots of damage tracks

02674: Chimera

3 Attacks (duh), flying (also duh)

02658: Stone Lurker (classic dungeon critter)

4 attacks, high DV, 75ish points

02492: Scarab Beetle Swarm

Disable, low point cost EDIT: Fearsome too (a mass of skittering scarab beetles should make people want to run away, not towards)

02730: Cavern Crawler

Burrow, High DV, 150ish points

02619: Cloak Fiend

I got no suggestion on stats, but it needs to be on this list ::D:

02911: Colossal Skeleton

Stats that put the grave horror to shame

03230: Abol... I mean, Goroloth :;):

4 high MAV attacks, prolly Frenzy. Can we have a swim speed? For that matter, can we have a lite version of swimming rules for regular Warlord models (something like half normal land movement)?

02919: Burrowing Horror

Burrow (really?), 2 Attacks, Critical Strike (look at those teeth and claws!), high DV

02838: Faceless Horror

lousy movement, lots of attacks

a 1500 point data card for the small boxed dragons

a 2000 point data card for the large boxed dragons

I think that's enough for now...

Actually a series of small, medium, large and XL monsters would be good to have, that way you could cover most of the more generic monster types in DHL without to much extra work. Just use the generics out of 1st edition as the basis.

This is awesome news, Gus! Thanks for doing this. Great timing, too, since I'm starting a Warlord RPG campaign next week. I was planning on just finding appropriate stat cards for the various monsters that I'm going to use, so it'll be nice to have a few "official" ones for this sort of thing.

Some ideas:

03069 Hooked Hulk/02517 Hooked Terror:

(Not sure if these are two versions of the same monster, but they seem somewhat similar)

-Good DV & MAV, Burrow, Disable, Tough

02664 Phase Cat

-Innate Spell: Invisibility, maybe? I don't really have any other ideas at the moment to make this one stand out, but this is a classic monster and I think it would be great inclusion.

I will second the notion for stat cards for dragons! I would even go as far as 2,500 and 3,000!

Is there any chance that this will include scenerios to use them in? Maybe a paragraph to set it up, a suggestion of monsters that would be connected to the new beast, and a map of the lair?

Edit:

Mostly something I could easily run as a quick Scenario for players!

I think a mini scenario or mission would be cool. Provide guidelines for troop points and setup.

Dwarves on a hunt for the Hill Giant dug into a series of caverns filled with other creatures for example. Provide a little background fluff for the mission and an example troop but leave room for players to choose their own force based on point guidelines.

The formorian giant, oriental dragon, beetle swarm, skeletal giant... I'll look up the numbers later.

There are many models I'd really like to see in such a setting, but truthfully most of them are humanoids that might fit best into a 8-10 card mini factions (hobgoblins, kobolds, Slithe Raiders, Derro for example).

Stone Giant: Adept or Solo Monster, DHL3270

Giant Base, 6 tracks, Move 8, DV 13, MD 13, Band, Beast, Fearsome, Tough/5, #MA 3, MAV 7, Warmaster, #RA 1, RAV 6, range 12, slow shot, AOE/1, Indirect shot

Hooked Hulk/Terror: Solo Monster, DHL3069

Large Base, 6 tracks, Move 6, DV 14, MD 12, Beast, Fearless, Tough/3, Deflect/2, Innate Spell (Hold)/5, #MA 2, MAV 8, Warmaster, Disable

Faceless Horror: Solo Monster, DHL 2838

Giant Base, 5 tracks, Move 3, DV 12, MD 14, Beast, Fearsome, Fearless, Tough/4, Deflect/1, Ridgerunner, Woodstrider, 360 #MA 3, MAV 5, Frenzy, Warmaster, Disable, #RA 1, RAV 7, Range 12, Blowthrough

Brass Bull: Solo Monster, DHL3208

Giant Base, 7 tracks, Move 6, DV 14, MD 13, Beast, Fearsome, Tough/2, Improved Charge/4, Deflect/1, #MA 4, MAV 6, First Strike, Shock, Warmaster, #RA 1, RAV 6, Range 18, Blowthrough, Critical shot/2

Attercap: Adept or Solo Monster DHL2809 **This is probably the one I'd like to most see

Base standard (possibly Large), 4 tracks, Move 6, DV 11, MD 12, Band, Beast, Tough/1, Ridgerunner, Woodstrider, Innate Spell(Slow)/8, 360, #MA 2, MAV 5, Poison Strike

Giant Spider: Adept or Solo Monster DHL3055

Base Large, 5 tracks, Move 5, DV 9, MD 10, Band, Beast, Tough/2, Ridgerunner, Wood Strider, #MA 1, MAV 6, Critical Strike/2, Poison Strike

Ghost: Solo Monster DHL2968 (or any one of many models)

Standard Base, 5 tracks, Move 7, DV 12, MD 14, Ranger, Undead, Fearsome, Tough/5, Innate Spell(Scare)/6, Non-Corporeal, #MA 2, MAV 6, Shock, First Strike, Critical Strike/3

Naga: Leader, DHL2755

Huge Base, Leader 4-9, 7 tracks, Move 7, DV 13, MD 15, 360, Outrider, Beast, Deflect/2, Fearless, Tough/2, mob leader/10, #MA 3, MAV 6, First Strike, Poison Strike, Warmaster, CP 7, Defensive Magic, Mage 3/8

Medusa: Solo Monster, DHL2833

Large Base, 5 tracks, Move 6, DV 12, MD 14, 360, Fearsome, Tough/3, Innate Spell (Ice Shards)/7, #MA 4, MAV 4, Shock, Poison Strike, Warmaster, #RA 1, RAV 6, range 30, Defensive Shot, Marksman/1, Poison Shot

Example of a mini-faction I think might be cool for a dungeon Crawl, Essentially a Nosferatu Vampire and his animal minions:

Wererats: Adept dhl2871

Standard Base, 3 tracks, Move 7, DV 10, MD 12, Beast, Band, Ranger, Ridgerunner, Tough/3, #MA 2, MAV 4, Backstab/3

Burrow Rats: Adept dhl2544

Standard Base, 2 tracks, Move 6, DV 10, MD 8, Beast, Mob, Band, Ridgerunner, Tough/1, #MA 1, MAV 4, Critical Strike/2

Dire Rats: Grunt dhl2889

Standard Base, 1 track, Move 4, DV 7, MD 7, Beast, Ranger, Mob, Ridgerunner, #MA 1, MAV 3

Bat Swarm: Adept dhl2668

Standard Base, 3 tracks, Move 10, DV 9, MD 6, Beast, Ranger, Band, Outrider, Hover, Deflect/3, #MA 4, MAV 3, Frenzy

Dire Bat: Solo Monster dhl2739

Large Base, 4 tracks, Move 3, DV 10, MD 8, Beast, #MA 2, MAV 5, Shock, Fly Move 10, Flyer, Improved Charge/4

Mattias, Vampire: Unique Leader DHL2867

Standard Base, Leader: 4-11/1, 6 tracks, Move 7, DV 13, MD 15, Beast, Outrider, Mob Leader/5, Tough/4, Undead, Fearsome, Ronin, Hover, Spy, #MA 3, MAV 5, Frenzy, Warmaster, Backstab/2, CP 7, Mage 2/6 Defensive Magic, Innate Spell(Bolt)

Would consider adding Wild Wolves, and Crypt Bats as well, and if Band didn't work well enough for troop design I'd Change the Wererats to sergeants and allow Eikar to be taken as part of the mini-faction.

Faction abilities: Mob Mentality, and Vampiric Feeding (Mattias, and Crypt Bats only)

I think mini factions like the one above would be cool ways to theme build a Dungeon Crawl, or an area of a Dungeon Crawl.

Other models I'd like to see datacards for: Clay Golem, Flesh Golem, Stone Golem, Efreeti, Large Water Elemental, Large Air Elemental (Innate Shockwave/8), small Elementals, Hell Hounds (#RA 1, RAV 5, Range 6, Blowthrough)

TruthfullY i could probably look through the DHL models and come up with another 50, but I'll stop here for now.

02911: Skeletal Giant

Reach; Critical Strike; First Strike; Fearsome or Shock

Absolutely any dragons! Boxed ones or the smaller DHL ones - 02864: Shadow Dragon, 02705: Skeletal Dragon, 02453: Guardian Dragon, etc.

02868: Eldritch Demon

Fearsome; Hover?; Poison Strike; Maybe an Innate Draining Touch or Fear?

02712: Eye Beast

Blowthrough, for sure

02674: Chimera

Fly/Hover; 360; Warmaster

03168: Fire Giant Queen

Don't care about stats - just one of the coolest 'big' models ever

They're not exactly "big monsters", but some of the following standard dungeon denizens would be good:

02568: D'Khul; 02833: Medusa (Innate Spell - Stun/Slow?); 02964: Cretus; Second the motion for a ghost (02991: Ghost King is a favorite); 03084: Succubus (Hover, Disable?)

Quick question for ya'll. Should any of these datacards have Flying? Flying is an expensive SA that would get no use whatsoever in a dungeon environment. The monsters would all be paying tons of points for something they couldn't use. Obviously a Chimera has flying, but it couldn't use it in a dungeon, so I'm wondering if its stat card should save the points and leave it off? This would also allow me to make a Dragon card with a blowthrough ranged attack, since I wouldn't ever make a card like that if it had flying.

Thoughts?

I've used flyers such as the crypt bats and gargoyl in some of my dungeon crawls. About the only thing I see is useful for is a burst of speed to get to the fight. I won't say to never use it, but it should be rare. Burrow and Non-Coporeal are a whole different animal. Both of those are very useful in a dungone setting.

And now for the weeping and gnashing of teeth part..... I just spent a ton on Warlord monsters to keep my dungon crawl as "official" as possible. Now you want to go and start allowing DHL stuff? Sheesh, I can't win!

(The reason I'm whining and crying is because I know I'm gonna love this and will have to buy even more minis for my dungeon crawls..........)

Well, since they aren't intended for use with normal Warlord games, why not adjust the point value that Flying represents? I'm guessing that now it probably has a scaled value tied to the number of DTs of the model, as even a wounded flyer in a standard game of Warlord has tactical value. Since it will be used infrequently in a Crawl by even the monsters that have it, why not just assign it a flat value then? Somewhere around the first DT cost for a standard Warlord Flyer, maybe? Keep it simple while remaining within the general guidelines of the core Warlord point builder...

I vote for flying models. A "Dungeon Encounters" style scenario doesn't always have to take place inside of a dungeon (or a cavern). For example, an outdoor Dungeon Encounters scenario could be that the PCs are exploring the ruins of an ancient city that is rumored to contain powerful magical items... and which happens to be teeming with monsters too.

I like this idea. And it can be generalized even further. No reason the points costs of dungeon beasties need conform 100% to what the point calculator says. As long is it is absolutely clear that these are in no way meant for regular games of Warlord and cannot be brought in a regular army (even freelance) then this isn't a problem at all.

Run the flying beasties through your points calculator and give them a discount for flying being less useful in dungeons.
