rgtriplec
If your friend decides to play a poison strike heavy list... I think there are about a dozen poison strikers in the Reptus army. It might be good to have some healers, since poison can deal two wounds a turn. Here is a good healer list for 1000 and 1500 from the Dwarf sublist. It also gives spies and tacticians, which are always helpful. I think that I might start playing a few games in Dayton... I'm in Cincinnati. Skadi, Half-Goddess 1 Valkyries 4 Ursula, Bear Rider Capt 1 Dire Bear 3 Valan, Forgemaiden 1 Forgemaidens 2 Valkyries 3 992 3 troops 4 cards 1 spies 7 healers 1500 Skadi, Half-Goddess 1 Valkyries 6 Kara Foehunter 1 Ursula, Bear Rider Capt 1 Dire Bear 4 Valan, Forgemaiden 1 Forgemaidens 4 Valkyries 4 Lesser Earth Elemental 1 1484 4 troops 5 cards 2 spies 10 healers
jdripley
Yeah, I didn't mean to say that grunts are the be-all end-all. Just not to overlook them. Most often a 1,000 point force that I build will start with Thorgram or Herryk, then I'll fill that troop in with a solid core of shieldmaidens, maybe a smattering of Halberdiers. Then I'll toss in a solo - I tend to favor either the Stone elementals or Snorri - then I'll go for a mixed unit, lead by Freya if I have the points, with warriors/halberds/piercers. One of my favorite 1500 point lists basically took two more or less typical dwarf archetypes and puts them together - a troop lead by Logrim with Maidens, and a troop lead by Logan with Berserkers, Swiftaxes, Halberds and a Bear. I believe I had snuck Snorri into that list as well. Works brilliantly because you have all sorts of resiliency in Logrim's troop, and you have a mobile force that's good at ripping things down with Logan's troop. And Snorri is himself, plinking away at targets of opportunity from the back. And once I did a 1,000 point (I think) force with one troop - Freya, Margara, and fill with Shieldmaidens. From there I gave Margara a pair of chain lightenings, and used the rest of the points on armor and weapon upgrades for Freya and the Maidens. It was a pretty small 1,000 point list! But I was able to use the Chain Lightenings to blunt the enemy advance, and then I brought all of my models together into a square and took the charge. Warmaster meant I gave better than I received. On my turn I pushed back, then advanced a little. Kept marching up the field. The enemy threw two good waves at me, then broke and ran. Brilliant! Granted we were playtesting the viability of an all Adept list versus an all Grunt list, and you can make the argument that if the enemy army had had some good magic, or a handful of models with high DV's it would have been different - but my point is that dwarves are capable of running a small, elite fighting company. Dwarves may be smelly, bearded beatsticks, but they're not entirely straight forward!

jdripley
Nice! I love that sculpt. Reminds me quite a bit of Margara Firetongue, which was also an excellent model. I love the artist credit! "Jason Wiebe, and don't you forget it!" Here's a list I just made up using Valana: --Freya with Gwyddis and a pair of Maidens --Ursula with Kara and a pair of Bear Riders --Valana with Margara, a Warrior, and a Piercer --Gargram with four warriors and four Halberdiers --Snorri =1332 points - enough room for some spells for Gwyddis (I'm thinking some Blesses and a few Cures) and Margara (something fire related of course), maybe even some Musicians or what have you. Four ranged models and a mage ought to carry the shooty bits, and Gargram's troop will hold the middle while Freya supports a flank and Ursula goes hunting in the enemy back field! wildbill
For those of you itchin' to play a really big battle, and have a LOT of large based models sitting around, here is a list for you!! King Thorgram Grimsteel + MA 11 Bear Riders Musician Freya Fangbreaker + MA 10 Bear Riders Musician Logrim Battlefury + MA 10 Bear Riders Musician Ursula 10 Bear Riders Musician Fulumbar Ironhammer 7 Bear Riders Musician Luck Stone Totals: 4,997 Points, 53 Models, 5 Troops, 6 Init Cards, 1 Spy Yup, this is a 5,000 point army with only 4 non-bear models in the army. If this army doesn't intimidate your opponent, nothing will!! Now, if you want more of a "well rounded" 5,000 point force, here is one for you! King Thorgram Grimsteel + GMA 11 Shieldmaidens Musician Freya Fangbreaker + MA 10 Shieldmaidens Musician Logrim Battlefury + MA 10 Shieldmaidens Musician Ursula 10 Bear Riders Musician Fulumbar Ironhammer 9 Bear Riders Musician Skadi, Half-Goddess + Outrider Stone Spirit Lesser Earth Elemental Luck Stone Totals: 4,999 Points, 58 Models, 8 Troops, 10 Init Cards, 2 Spies This army would also do really well. Enjoy! Wild Bill Edited January 22, 2009 by wildbill

wildbill
Did I miss a new rule about Adepts? The last I heard you could have 1 troop of adepts per 1,000 points. I made my lists for 5,000 points, so that gives me 5 troops per adept type. The first army list had 5 troops of bear riders. That is legal as far as I know. GreyHorde
I knew there was a reason I needed more bears!
wildbill
I only own like 20, so even I end up a few short. Wild Bill

wildbill
I would have to do a whole lot of proxying, but if you are going to ReaperCon (I think I am) then maybe we can hook up like Friday evening or something and try that out. bluethunder
I'd have to do a fair bit of proxying also, but just to see a game that size would be a blast. I've never played more than 2,000 or 2,500 points myself.
jdripley
Low-fantasy Dwarf army. Nothing but awesomesauce. Beat that! --Thorgram, Durgam, Warriors x5 = 375 --Ursula, Bear Riders x3 = 378 --Tohil, Kara, Piercers x2, Pathfinder = 398 --Griffon = 125 --Stone Spirit = 216 Thorgram can hold his line, Tohil & Co. are the quick opportunists, Ursula plays hammer to Thorgrim's anvil. Griffon takes to the skies to mess with their heads (where's he gonna land????) and the Stone Spirit shifts the earth beneath their feet to REALLY mess with their head (gah! where's he gonna surface????). Kindof an uncharacteristic list for me. Faster than I'm used to, far less magic, and no Maidens, no Halberdiers... I like it though. I think that the Griffon and the Stone Spirit are the keys. Without them the list would fall apart. Of course, without them I'd have 341 points of warriors and halberdiers to shore up the list and they'd keep it from falling apart :)
