Razig's Revenge

Recommended Posts

The Salty Sabres and Zombie Recruits are must haves in almost any Razig list I take.

Followed closely by scuttlebones.

None of which I own, nor can I get before GenCon. Should I just borrow something?

Specifically, I was looking at:

Dark Maiden, crows, scurvey dog, 5 crewman, book of tactics

willy, 5 marines

black knife tom, 5 crewman

sharkboy

cannon

Really all I can come up with. Razig himself seems to be a big wuss.

The models you own are similar to my own. I only just recently bought Salty Sabres and Zombies. Also, Razig is awesome. He can boost his DV up to 16, making it almost impossible for anything to hit without a natural 10.

The Totem Trouble scenario is going to be played VERY different for a Razig army. You are going to use most of your army to defend your totem. By putting your models in b2b with your clerics you can make sure that their rush strategies are completely useless.

I would focus a Razig army on a few Large troops. This will give you an advantage during the General Murphy game. You will also need some cheaper models to make sure you can start/put out fires in the Raiding of Denelspire scenario.

The First Round in all of your games, you should activate the Dark Maiden then focus and Summon Spectral Minions. This gives the Dark Maiden a nice little troop of minions to help her kick butt.

I included salty sabres in the army, because you need some serious beef and they have it. Their tough checks also work great with razig's WA and you might even get a few back on the board. You have enough Crewman that you should be able to pick out 5 of them that look different and proxy them as Salty Sabres.

The Rats are going to be put to work as your basic object grabbing force. Don't charge them into battle, instead use them to set fires or defile the totem. In General Murphy use them to attack spell casters and archers.

Remember that Undead are immune to Poison, so when Clarrisa unleashes that beautiful 5" AoE Toxic Cloud, you can drop it right on your own guys with no issues.

The other thing to remember is to take advantage of the Salty Sabres and zombies Nauseating SA. That is, when possible, put yourself in a position for the enemy to charge you rather than you charge them. Whether that be by you swarming and killing someone leaving you open for them to charge you with other models, or simply not basing them. Of course you have to consider your opponent and their DIS value when doing this. But, when used affectively, this tactic has great frustrating results on your opponent when they charge you and then cant attack you.

Finally took photos of my Razig proxy "Marauding Marines of Mauritius."

Click on the link below. Entire army best viewed as album slideshow.

Note: From looking at the scenarios for the tournament, I do not think that it would be a very good idea to load up your list with too many shooty types. Your thoughts?

Good Luck!

As a rule of thumb, "a lot of x" is generally a bad strategy for tournament armies, unless x = basic soldier model. When you become one-dimensional, you become easier to counter. There are some of the scenarios that a larger number of shooty types would probably work pretty well, but there are others that could be absolutely brutal on a shooter-heavy list (General Murphy comes to mind).

BTW, good looking stuff as always, Dan.

You guys amaze me - in a good way - the way you analyze the game. It's fun to read your observations. Not that I learn anything from them.

I usually just end up painting/fielding figures I think look cool. Example: The Pathfinder Scarecrow Golem is so cool that now I gotta make room in my Necropolis Army for two (2) Gauntfields. Sad, huh?

I remember playing Vince in the '09 tournament. His crossbowmen were placed in such a manner that I was, well, lets just say I was unable to carry out my master plan.

Anyway, to stay on thread, what makes the Razig unique are their shooters. They got leaders and soldiers with rifles and pistols. They have artillery. Heck, no one else even has a catapult. Yet, I find myself loading up on melee types because of the scenarios that have been presented.

I know that the scenarios are meant to force one to build a balanced force. That's cool. But I would like to play a tourney where folks just line up on the Field of Mars with armies built to showcase their factions' unique strengths. Instead, what we get as a result are balanced, ready-for-anything builds are armies that lose some of their character.

I guess my point is that I have a Necropolis army, a Reptus army, and a Razig army. And when I try to build them to fit into the scenarios, they all just end up being kinda the same.

This year I tried to get clever. I thought WWVD? So I made a chart and read through each scenario and scientifically ranked each troop type ++, +, 0, - or -- based one how well they would do given the scenario conditions.

My conclusion, after much study and deliberation, was what Vince stated above: Basic soldier types are best, which brings me back to the whole flavor thing. My final numbers were:

Individual Melee Troops 11

Power Solos 10

Flyers 8

Casters 4

Ranged 3

Ranked 3

I really want to build a Razig army that looks cool with lots of marines and stuff, but if I do, I'll end up getting the "Isandlwana Award" for sure.

Anyone who missed reading this post will certainly not have missed much. And I'll still build an army based mainly on what I think looks cool. Just thought I'd chime in.

This is true, to some extent, and it is largely by design. It helps prevent huge mismatches between factions that excel in one particular; if all the scenarios played to a given strength like this, you'd see two things: 1) a heavy number of lists using the factions that perform best for the scenarios, and 2) that the factions that perform it best will be the big winners of the tournament. By including a diverse set of scenarios (at least as possibilities, even if you don't end up playing all of them), it helps level the playing field a bit. However, I'd disagree that the scenarios force you to build a particular way; rather, you are required to perform a risk-assesment of the situation. It is possible to play a list built to your faction's strengths, but doing so at the expense of performance in one or more scenarios could hurt you. On the other hand, playing to those strengths could produce a home-run in terms of a big victory in a scenario your list is tailored for.

Case in point, last year for RCon I showed up with 3 tournament lists, without a clue as to which I was going to play. Two of the lists were a bit more conservative, while the last was a risky combo. Ultimately, I chose one of the more conservative lists, tho the choice was largely based on what I felt like playing at the time. In hindsight, however, knowing the opponents that I faced for the games I played, the higher risk army would have probably scored better in the tournament.

I'm in the beginning stages of figuring out what I *might* play for RCon this year, and so far, I don't think any of them are cookie-cutter.

This list is about the double frustration of the nuaseated curses of the

Salty Sabres paired up with the disabling madness of the chain gang. Toss

in Razig's Warlord ability to bring back models from the dead and its sure

to bring some grumbles from any opponent.

A friend asked me today about Razig so I came here and realized there are just not nearly enough lists here. So, I made a couple real quick that I thought would be fun to try out. Here is one.

Razig - 1000 points

Troop 1

Razig

Seahag - Familiar

Salty Sabre x 5

Skeletal Chain Ganger x 5

Zombie Recruit x 5

Troop 2

Black Knife Tom

Skeletal Harpooner x 3

Troop 3

Skeletal Harpooner x 3

Zombie Recruit

Troop 4

Karkarius

Troop 5

Scuttlebones

Equipment

Luck Stone

-------------------------------------------

5 troops + spy

30 models (60 DTs, 59 MAs)

This list is all about the synergy of cursing and disabling on offense, while having nauseating on defense. The hag has lightning spells as well as the Razig Mezmorize stunning spells. If the enemy gets too close she can shriek (roar) and then cast her spells.

If I made any changes, it might be to give Razig the armor of courage so that he could do free regroup actions to make his troop bigger to better take advantage of his WL ability.

The crab might be a little slow as a burrower, but he still dictates the opponents change their strategy based on where you move him.

Then there is the shark man - K. Has to be one of my favorite solos in the game. Now, you do have to use him wisely as he only has a tough/2. But, is a ton of fun to play with if you use him the right way. With Rage, frenzy, and savage, he has potential to do a LOT of damage.

This is a list we discussed during playtesting, but I don't think it ever made it to the open forums, and certainly not in this thread.

Bring out the guns!

Dark Maiden

Rat Swarm x 2

Troop 2-3

Black Knife Tom

Rat Swarm x 3

Troop 4-6

Grim Pete

Rat Swarm x 3

Troop 7-12

Soul Cannon

Luck Stone

The Rats are only there as a picket line; make the opponent kill their way through you to get to the 6 Soul Cannons. Use the Maiden, the Black Knife Toms, and the Grim Petes to deal with anything that slips through the picket. With 12 cards in the deck, there are plenty of opportunities to activate a soul cannon at just the right time. Use the Maiden's bombardment to eliminate pesky back-court targets you don't want to have to chase.

Zombie recruits work equally well in place of the rats; Nauseating helps reduce the number of attacks they suffer, Curse helps reduce the effectiveness of models that get past the picket. Plus, there is enough points savings that with some adjusting, you can upgrade a Black Knife Tom or two into a Crow's Nest Willie, and gain another long-range slow-fire gun.

Stubbdog: Care to expand upon why Karkarius is your favorite solo in the game? I haven't ever faced him, though to be fair I've only played against Razig once. The mini is awesome, but I'm assuming you are mostly referring to the data card.

Shakandara: An interesting list idea. In a previous gaming life, I played Dwarfs in Warhammer Fantasy. I have an appeal towards war machines, and the Soul Cannons are the closest equivalent in Warlord.

Karkarius is one of my favorites for sure. And yes, based on the datacard moreso than the sculpt, although I like the sculpt too.

And no real reason other than he has met or exceeded on the table expectations just about every time he is on the table for me. Obviously, he is not a 200 point dragon, but for his points, he has been extremely effective. With his SAs, he can dish out a whole lot of whoopin. There are very few sub 100 point models that have the potential to do 7-9 points of damage in a single activation. Granted everything would have to go perfect for that to happen, but its still there. He has done 6-7 for me several times.

His only real downside is that he has just normal speed, he won't be outrunning anyone.

From a modeling perspective, I have a fondness for the Razig army list. I haven't started one because I haven't found a list I've fallen in love with, yet.

I'm not sure this is the one, however I think I'm getting closer. Here's a list I put together trying to fit as many Scuttlebones as I could into a thousand point list (turns out to be 4).

Somehow, I missed posting my tournament list from this past year's RCon. I decided to play Razig in part because of the pirate theme, but also because it is outside my normal list, and would be unexpected. In addition to helping with the terrain for the tournament, I was also mostly responsible for writing the majority of the scenarios. Because of that, I built a super-generic, all-purpose build, not designed to meet any of the specific scenario goals. This is the sort of list that I'd take with me to a regular Sunday afternoon gaming session at the local game store for fun. It's got a little bit of everything - heavy melee warlord, a caster, tacticians and spies, some ranged firepower, flyers, a burrowing model, and a moderate model count. Also, because of the con theme, I commissioned the models I needed to fill out the list so I could field a completely painted army, and then built a custom terrain board to carry the army on at the con. When I get a change, I'll take some pics of it to add to the Adon's Most Wanted thread.
