Reven

Recommended Posts

Welcome back for another year. New alliances have been forged upon the Steppe. We shall make a Grand Reven indeed. Sound the drums, the Khakahn has called for his boghul to march. The tribes and clans shall gather. The Akhpakh Khoolahylan! We shall take back the honor the Taltain have stolen from us.

I think what Kiakara and Varaug have is what you might call a mutual understanding.... and as I recall it, Kiakara's agreenemt involves half of whatever territory belongs to the orcs once it is all over..and that the binder of the contract had something to do with Varaug's heart and Kiakara's knife.

I suppose it's a good thing Gragg Elfslayer hasn't ventured south.... yet.

Kiakara heads her own Grand Reven, and from my perspective she probably heads a more diverse group than Varaug. Her fluff speaks directly about her relationships with Ogres, Goblins, and one can imagine both Bull and regular Orcs. Not to say that Varaug wouldn't have these elements, just that the bulk of his troops seem more likely to be meatier Bull Orcs in comparison to Kiakara.

In game terms Kiakara got a fair boost, although I have to say while I don't mind her dropping a cleric level it was a bit disappointing for Hold to become a Level 3 spell and now be out of her (and every other Reven models) grasp. As much as I loved the model she wasn't really worth taking before, now she comes out fairly well, and her ability to haul out a troop of up to 19 models is pretty nice, and gives you dozens of ways to build an effective troop around her.

I'd probably give her a Warcry, and an Aspect of the Hunter and let her loose supported with a handful of beefy models (Bull Fighters, Ogres, or BugBears) 7 or 8 Orcs, and 5-6 Goblin Skeeters. That would be my first attempt at using her anyhow, and after it failed I'd go back to the drawing board ::D:

1) You are assuming the games take place in a single point of time, there are many ways Varaug and his Hordes could spill over into Taltos given time. That is their goal after all.

2) Your notion isn't unique to the Reven, many factions are separated by various areas, and by other factions. This is a fantasy game, imagination is at a premium.

Toying around with the idea of a mob type army given that I'll be bolstering my numbers of Orcs and Orc Spearmen in short order. Usually I like to take 3-4 Bull Orcs or other heavy hitters in every troop, but I havn't done this in the army below, might be detrimental given the nice shiny new Tenacious FA.

I wonder if I should condense down to 2 troops and Beef include some Hunters as well, dropping my model count, I guess that might defeat the purpose of trying to pack in as many Lesser Orcs as I can.

Kiakara's troop would be aimed towards handling or at least laying a significant amount of damage onto the enemies most potent or problematic troop. pound for pound enemy adepts can probably take out the Bull Orcs, but I'm hoping the Lesser Orcs would be able to lend enough support through numbers to weigh the odds towards the Reven, I would expect all three troops to get heavily battered given that the Orcs only have a single attack, gang tactics will work, but there will be a high body count, especially running up against Warmaster adepts.

The other two troops would each function in two parts, each Kak'Urg and the Orc Boys ganging up on a threatening part of the enemy army, while Lunk and the archers picked off weakened targets.

The big problem I see is a lack of ability to deal with any sort of ranged threat the enemy might be able to dish out, if they come to the board with decent numbers of archers and a solid blocking line there could be real trouble. I suppose with the number of models I have it would be difficult to stop me from getting to an archer threat, but if I devote a decent number of models to that the enemies blocking line might just tear my poorer quality models to pieces.

OK , firstly , if you are playing the default Reven list , Bull Orc Fighters are Adepts . Therefore , Troop 3 is illegal . You also have way too many spell on Ombur so either drop a couple of the Cure1's or even upgrade the Familiar to a Holy Symbol . You may even want to spread the Skeeters around replace that illegal BOF for 3 Goblins in Neek's troop . Maybe look at changing one of the Sergeants for Dantral so you can have another Elite and Gonda is great as a cheap Healer .

Easy fix, replace the Bull Orc in Troop 3 with a Bull Orc Hunter, the 3 point difference takes you to 1000 points.

I have to agree that you don't need quite so many spells, 3-4 is enough for nearly any caster, if you run out you can always rely on your healer SA.

Drop a few spells and invest in another Bull Orc Fighter or Hunter.

The object of this list is to hit specific targets hard and hope you do enough damage to cripple quickly. I would hope to bring them in as a mob or a couple waves trying to target a chosen flank, and using terrain to slow the opposing flank, hoping to crush my target before my opponent could outflank me.

Urga and the Beastmen would be there to enrage on high DV models in a troop. I figure hitting twice against a chosen target with a (6mav+4enrage+1totem = )11mav is worth a 29 point model. Hopefully I can aspect the hunters to FS at 11.

With his weapon, totem and a successful aspect, Varaug will auto hit every model in the game. Hopefully his large based body guards will draw some of the attention away from him. I would probably move all four archers to the Warlords troop to act as a rear guard as the unattacked flank approaches.

I really like the Bulls, and generally do better with them than my other armies, most of the time. It helps being the dwarf player in your group also. The one really bad beating I have taken with them was against Castlebuilder's Bulls.

Ok, here is a horde-ish Noghra list that looks at least fun to try:

Troop 1:

Neek

Gonda (lesser familiar, blessing, 2x aspect of the hunter)

7x rangers

Troop 2:

Neek

Gonda (lesser familiar, blessing, 2x aspect of the hunter)

7x Line Smashers

Troop 3:

Neek

Gonda (lesser familiar, blessing, 2x aspect of the hunter)

7x flingers

Troop 4:

Neek

Gonda (lesser familiar, blessing, 2x aspect of the hunter)

7x goblin warriors

Troop 5:

Neek

Gonda (lesser familiar, blessing, 2x aspect of the hunter)

3x harpries

4x beastriders

Troop 6:

Neek

6x goblin warriors

Troop 7:

Neek

5x goblin warriors

Battle Totem

---------------------------------------------------------

7 troops, 7 cards, 58 models, 1498 points

With the battle totem, the average MAV is is 4. Bless makes it 5. Then toss a aspect of the unter on neek and he is rolling with 3 swings at mav 8 before support bonuses. Course things have to work out s that you can cat those spells in order and on time. But, the concept looks good.

Use the aspect of the hunter spells on the beast riders instad and it goes to 3 swings at mav 9 before any blesses.

And dont forget, the AotH spell stack too.

So here is my horde list. Since my pleas for goblins with spears has been answered with a resounding no. I’ll just use lesser orcs. The average goblin soldier is 17 points, so an 18 point orc is pretty equivalent. I plan to play this list next week, hopefully I won’t draw an archer heavy elf list or 18 bone marines.

Kak’Urg 4-11/1+6mob+2mob=4-19/1

Gonda HS 3 x aspect

17 x Ork Spear

Kak’Urg 4-11/1+6mob+2mob=4-19/1

Gonda HS 3 x aspect

17 x Ork Spear

Urga 4-9/1 + mob/2 = 4-11/1

Gonda HS 3 x Aspect

9 x Ork Spearmen

Urga 4-9/1 + mob/2 = 4-11/1

Gonda HS 2 x Aspect

9 x Ork Spearmen

Totem

Abatross

1500 points

60 models – 52 that first strike at MAV 6 before bonuses.

5 cards
