This guy is looking great so far, very realistic feel to it. Something to keep in mind with heavy weathering though. Usally with military hardware your going to have at least several layers of paint and primer. It might not hurt to take this into consideration with these guys. Your down to bear metal if you have rust so the metallic shine will be there unless you go heavy on the mud and other weathering. You can the darker rust look if its pitted and built up enough with little wear to expose the "base metal" under it. Going to post acouple pics of this tank I did several years ago, not trying to steal your thunder or anything Anthony ::D: Just easier to explain this way what I mean. Was around armor for alot of years so I saw first had how this stuff weathered in a heavy field enviroment.

As far as the battle damage its cool but.... I noticed they all look like bladed slashing type weapons and are more vertical in odd places and not horizontal as if he was standing there recieving fire. I would go with more glancing blows from projectile weapons or some slagged ones from high energy hits. A few could look older while the newer ones could have more of a "base metal" metallic look with scorch marks. You will see alot of rust around the older ones from the exposed metal, even in a desert enviroment metal rusts, just not as fast as a damp one.

I dont go for the cartoony GW look either so You might want to check with your client before doing to much, there is a distinct differece in the way they it looks and he may want to stick to a particular WH 40K look.

Hope that helps

Chris

This is a disclaimer: I cannot do this better than you.

I would suggest adding in the odd bullet hit or three on the models, especially the shoulderpads.

tanker22: Fantastic weathering on that model! I find the dozer blade positively droolworthy. I can see you've studied (or had the opportunity to work from) things rusting away. As an armor builder, about the only criticism I'd have is that the vehicle looks more like an abandoned wreck, rusting away somewhere than something still being used. Mostly it comes from the fact that the rotating/swivelling areas of the sponsons are rusted (I would at least put in shiny metal "swivel grooves") and tips of the exhausts should probably have more soot on them.

Okay, so I got some kind of NMM or leather thing going on the trim. I will be adding battle damage but I dont know if I need to do some kind of corrosion for it to look more like metal. If I do add corrosion how do I do it without messing it all up. I'm scared.

Don't be scared to try new things...that's how we learn.

When I saw the oxidation you glazed on, I literally said "YES!" outloud. It really adds subtle color variations that you need in a rather monochromatic mini. Try an even lighter glaze of a light, soft blue, to give the corrosion some depth, like OKF was saying. Also, keep those colors handy to do the eyes/lenses. After you do the lenses, barely glaze that base color (the kinda pukey looking color) back over them. You want to just barely knock down the brightness of the eyes. This way, you don't have a putrid, weathered model with pristeen eyes.

Also, what are your plans for the tubes?

Thanks guys, always did like this one, but I think it only fair we keep comments on the model at a minimum. I only posted the pics to give Antnol a different look at weathering ideas, not for my own feedback. It is his WiP after all ::):

Good point about the sponson guns Epicenter, should have some more shine in it though. g\Guess I was looking at it like greese and grey primed metal areas.

Hey thanks a lot for the references Chris and dont worry about people commenting on your stuff in here. that way i can look at what you have done and see what other people think and try to replicate that onto my own miniatures. I am open for any ideas and really dont mind this thread being filled with all kinds of references for me. It really does help me out in the long run. One other question I have for you guys is I need an accent color which i would like to use on the pack and the gun. I was thinking of red to contrast the green but I dont know if that would be real Nurgley. i am having trouble "seeing' the miniature with red but if I do it right I guess it would come out okay. I cant really think of any other color to use. Help?

When in doubt, go purple. A light purple is going to look out of place, and your armor is highlighted up to white. I might suggest accent colors using the Dark Elf Triad. You can go darker with a little black added for your darkest shades, and something like GW's Fortress Grey for the sharpest highlights. Another good combo might be blue-greys. If you do use reds, use dull reds, like RPP Brick, and highlight up to a median red, like a Scab or Scar Red, then use the reddish skin tones to further highlight. This way, you can express a red, but it will be somewhat desaturated like your main colors.

Back to an earlier question I had...are you using a "wonder-wash" of some sorts?

So here he is almost complete. Just need to do the little bits here and there. And to answer your question, Lunchbox, I am using washes around the edges of the armor to back line them and for the greasy mess running down staining the armor.

Great looking mini! The gray choices are perfect, and you excecution is spot on. The only thing bugging me is the forest green tube on his left. The greens you have are yellowy, gray, and brown...yet the green you chose for that one tube has a rich, deep green with a hint of blue. Actually, the hint of blue is an illusion, because your other colors are so far from that. That tube has now become the focal point, and makes it very difficult for my eye to travel your piece, and examine it...I keep returning to that tube. Keep in mind that I think your techniques and excecution are wonderful...but that one little tube is bothering me.

Also, if you want to have a little fun with this mini, as a test subject for future creations, try glazing your median green shade onto the back pack. It will be so subtle, but it really helps "tie up" the mini.

As for the "wonder wash" question, I was refering to washes mixed with floor wax, or wood working sealants. They give a very deep, yet flat look to the minis.

Seriously...your stuff really looks great, and you obviously have the talent to be a GREAT painter.

Yeah I was trying to go for a green ooz something or other running through that tube but I think you are right. It draws way too much attention. I will tone it down with a wash or something. Speaking of wash. I wasnt quite sure what a "wonder wash" was but yeah i did use a flow extender for the first wash over the entire mini. the other washes were just water and paint.
