ECM Fire Magnets

Hey guys, Im fairly new to CAV with only a handful of games to my credit but Im experiencing a disturbing phenomena that I thought I would run by you.

 

ECM vehicles would seem to be a wise addition to a section, a handy escort to hinder incoming fire. However, in almost every one of the games Ive played Ive seen just the opposite effect. A stinking Sabre or Nomad draws fire like flies to .. well you know. The opposition is quite aware of the importance of ECM vehicles and typically attempts to take them out early. In the opening stages of the game this is typically undertaken through long-range indirect fire. Now certainly with range modifiers and that nasty little ECM umbrella up its tough to bring accurate fire but in practice it usually doesnt have to be very accurate. Consider a section of 4 or 5 vehicles snugged up around a Nomad trying to stay within his AOE to gain the ECM effect. When an indirect round comes in, sure it normally misses but almost any deviation threatens some of these secondary targets. Unless the firer rolls 8s or above a typical 2" AOE is going to hit something. Ive had my so called "protected" sections dessimated by these potshots in every one of our games. Its gotten so my troops cringe when I assign an ECM vehicle to their formation. "PLEASE SIR, LET SOMEBODY ELSE HAVE THE DAMNED NOMAD!"

 

Has anyone else had this experience? Am I missing some point of rule or tactic that would improve their effectiveness?

Mattyfoe loves hunting my recon/jamming units. I tend to favor the Ashigaru (Terran) and the Ryoshi (Open Mkt) as they have a higher DV. The Puma is my softest, regularly fielded jammer an it reliably suffers for it. The best advice I can give you is to keep a tight screen in front of your jammer to limit his lines of fire, and as far as IA, it's a tough one to counter. The jammer itself is your best cover, but if your opponent is that effective get some shots on his IA.

What I do to protect my Electrical Warfare units is tightly group them in overlapping protection. For example, in my Terran CAV section I field two 'hawk Vs, a 'hawk VI, a Regent, a Talon, and a Raptor. The Regent covers the whole section with its counterbarrage while the Raptor does the same with its AA. While having counterbarrage and AA won't stop your opponent from lobbing attacks at your section it will act as a deterrent.

No defensive fire versus strikes, but I think what SoS was saying is that the Counter Battery will discourage folks from lobbing in too many IA attacks. A couple of games ago with Sergeant Crunch I faced 4 (I think) Conquerors around a Nomad. Of course I saw the huddle and tried to drop mortar rounds into the thick of them, and I learned that each of the Conquerors got to fire IA back. This discouraged me from any more shannanegans with the mortars, at least against them.

 

Additionally (although I am not sure of this - would need to look it up), I think that everyone gets to take direct fire against an IA attack if they have LOS. It might be that a way to limit IA attacks is to make LOS with the unit ASAP.

 

Finally, because Recon models are often fairly cheap, it might work better to have fewer models huddled in the bubble than you suggest above. Two Nomads with 2-3 vehicles in front of them will split the incoming IA attacks as well as leaving the whole rear area as a safe place for artillery to drift. Not that my Recon models haven't also been hit, but I wouldn't say that they have taken anything like the the damage that it sounds like your have.

If your ECM is cancelling out the shooters FRS like it is supposed to, Wouldn't a "5" or so drift the rounds out of the way?

 

Most experienced players know that the weak link to a huddle is the ECM CAV. It is normal that their life expectancy is measured in seconds. Come over and play against my Rach some time, and I'll show you what my Jackals like to do to recon CAV's...... ::P:

I love facing the 'Huddle.' When the T-Birds' IAs start flying, Recon CAVs (and vehicles) start dying (and anything nearby don't appreciate the attention). :devil:

 

I'll usually have an AA and/or Counter-battery unit in my Armor/Fire Support sections.

 

I prefer using Recon models as flankers or strike units. I'm not adverse to using them for EW, but I do not depend it.

I have to concur. I seldom build my Armor sections with EW units. Sometimes a specialty section with Gunships but that is typically for EST not ECM. I do like Sethoman's idea of the Duelist, Crusader, and Centurion section. The Crusader is a little tougher nut to crack though.

And the Crusader brings a gun to the gun fight, also. He can stand is own, if necessary. Est + piercing + linked means he can take down quite a few targets, all except the heaviest armored CAVs and Vehicles. Of all the sections I have played, since CAV 1.5 this has been my absolute favorite, and I never leave home without it. And Centurion Anvil makes it even better......

 

Just another reason why the Templar nation will win the second war.....
