DHL 03201: Damian Helthorne

I very much enjoyed painting up Tre Manor's Damian Helthorne for Reapercon 2008.

 

After the zoom in I can see where I still have a ton of work in the smoothing of my blends, but overall I am very happy with this piece. It will be fun to see if I can improve more and see how things turn out next year.

Stub, that's a good job on the fig. I think CMoN didnt give you enough credit. I like the rugged look and the shield work

I think, to avoid confusion, that it should be pointed out that this piece took the Silver in the DHL Large category.

I think the photo is letting you down on CMON. I've seen your painting and know that it is much smoother that what the face looks like in that pic.

I agree that it is a very nice mini... but it looks different than I remember it. Did you add some sort of big base to it at the last minute? It seems like I remember it being recessed inside a black tube or something. Or am I remembering someone elses?

Jason: I don't think your picture does this piece any justice really. Since I held the actual entry in my hand and looked at it I know the picture doesn't show it's true worth.

I am happy with my paintjob, but the camera doesnt lie. I still have a ton of work to do in terms of glazing and smoothing out blends.

Same here with the photo Stub, very nice layout but it doesn't do the work you put into it the justice you deserve.

I think in general, Reaper minis get a bit of the cold shoulder from the CMoN crowd.

You are remembering correctly.

 

With the base, it was 3" tall, putting it out of the DHL single category.

I removed the base after all the negative remarks it got. Unfortunately it was after the judging. Or maybe it was fortunate. Looking at the DHL small category, I think I would probably not have placed at all.
