OK - today's events so far:

  • Dusted off and used the stair machine in the basement
  • Made iced tea to drink at work rather than soda
  • Made breakfast and skipped the cheese slice

It isn't much but it's more than I did yesterday.

And I wrote the time I spent on the stair machine on the calendar as a little reminder that I did it. And to do it tomorrow.

I'm hoping to check out one of those 24 x 7 x 365 gyms tonight to see if I would actually use the thing. My company pays for half of fitness club fees so that would make the price very reasonable.

Oh, and I need to pull out my DDR mat and see if I have any more coordination than when I tried in the past.

Suggestion - we post quarterly results? Monthly is a bit too little time to see any real change so maybe every three months? Starting June 1?

Good for you -- that is awesome! Doesn't sound like "not much," sounds like a lot and a great first step. I have been continuing some pushups and situps and walking with my wife in the morning, and I think that making the first step is often the hardest.

My wife is just finishing a Master's degree in Psych counseling, and she was telling me that, in many cases, daily excercize provides the same effects as daily anti-depressant medication. That seems like a good thing, even if one is not depressed, it demonstrates that a little bit of activity has more far reaching effects than just weight loss and energy.

I plan on ordering a single cheeseburger instead of a double cheeseburger.

I know, that's not much, but after I get used to that, I plan to go down to the Jr Cheese.

And I'm going to hook up my DDR pad again and start "fakedancing". If I wake up 30 minutes earlier every day, I can dance and then still have time to shower.

Also, we're going to start swordfighting at Reaper, so I'll get some addiitonal exercise from failing to doge, rubbing my bruises and crying....

Bryan, remind me to bring my sword next time I visit. I haven't fought in a while. But it all depends on how you're doing your fighting, what types of weapons, etc.

I'm not a fencer. I learned stage combat, which is much different and much more painful at times.

I'm going to head out to renew my gym membership today.

Took the day off from Michaels to give myself some "me" time to deal with some things and get my life in order.

Had a V8 and a banana at breakfast instead of my typical oatmeal.

Out of curiosity, what kind of swordfighting is this? In my attempts to exercise and get back in shape, I have started working out with some filipino stick fighting again -- what are you guys doing?

Swordfighting sounds like a great way to lose weight fast. An arm gotta weigh at least a few pounds.....

Joking aside, I gained 15 pounds during my 16 days in the US, so I'm ready to join in.

Today's success:

Made lunches for the week. I use the salad bag and split it out into smaller bags and add whatever other vegies look good. I use 2-oz plastic containers for various toppings, including banana pepper slices and craisins and fat-free dressing. Then I just dump the toppings into the bag when I am ready to eat, shake it up to distribute the dressing and pour on a plate. It's big and cruchy, so that quickly satisfies two cravings with eating.

I also stopped all caffeine intake. Or at least I tried. The headache is enough I'm going to stretch this one out a couple of days.

Increased water intake. Brough a sliced lemon and lime to add a little flavor when I want a change.

It's a start!

Walked the dog again. Longer than yesterday, but not as far as he's gone before...

Actually had yesterdays Oranges for breakfast and a Banana after coming back from the walk.

*looks at Dr Thunder* Yeah, soda's gonna be hard for me to break. I've tried stopping before.

A couple of thing to consider as you approach your weight lose programs

  • Enlist your partner in your plan, misery loves company + you can provide each other support
  • Find a physical activity (s) that is (are) fun and not fadish or going to turn boring
  • Wean yourself off your favorite fat/comfort foods.
  • You are esentially retaining yourself in how to live. Crash/Fad diets rarely work. Good lifetime habits normally do work
  • Diets with out exercise and vice versa do not work very effectively
  • Take care to protect your joints (knees, ankles, shoulders, hips) jumping into exercise routines and be hard on the body. Make sure you warm up and build up to where you used to be. Tylenol may end up being you best friend
  • Dont beat yourself up if you have a set back, just start again and keep trying
  • Identify times/activities that cause you to want a snack/over eat and manipulate them or change your routine to avoid them until your diet and exercise programs is ingrained and a strong habit. i.e. like when smokers want a cigarette after a meal or when drinking at a bar. they have to find something else to do to prevent that urge. It can be a tough thing to do.
  • Set attainable goals in stages so that you can see and feel your accomplishments.

Enjoy the process, its a challenge

It was all the chips.

And the barbeque.

And the cheesecake.

And the... ::):

Very easy to gain weight while on a trip. Hopefully, some of the additional weight is just water weight due to increased sodium intake (from restaurant food) that will dissipate over time.
