05/28/08 - Healthy living attempts

Recommended Posts

Rough in my deployed location, but I am on the bandwagon, also. Being a civilian surrounded by military does a lot for getting a low self image.

Up to 70 push ups a day, and jogging 3 times per week. Hope to bring the stomach down before I get back in September. Rough with everything at the chow hall being high in grease, and salad gets old after a while.

On the plus side, we finally hit the 110F mark (43.3 for those who use C) - makes walking to and from the restroom exercise in itself.

EDIT - and Cheesecake. Hard not to eat cheesecake at lunch and dinner.......

EDIT 2 - Had a brownie covered with ice cream and chocolate. Bad Mike.....

Pfft. Not real swords then.

On topic, I tried really hard to talk myself out of doing stairs this morning but couldn't quite do it. So time on the stair machine. Same as yesterday on the iced tea and lack of breakfast cheese.

Last night I checked out the 24 hour gym and it looks like a good option if I keep up with this. I'm giving myself a month to get into the routine of using the stair machine consistently before I think about adding anything else. The gym has my very favorite exercise machine - the counter-balanced pullup machine. I could do pullups and dips for ages.

Um, Boffer weapons, I don;t know specifics on styles etc. since I'm not a swordfighter by any stretch.

Those are fun - we recently started in with a padded stick for blocking and striking practice, and have plans to buy some gear for full-out sparring. I would try to come up with some rules for longer fights with the boffer weapons, as each bout can be pretty quick if you are just going for a touch.

Might I suggest some head and neck protection even with boffer weapons. Even hockey or Lacross style helmets. Pretty much the only real danger of boffer weapons is a head shot and those will happen even if you make the head off target. With some simple head gear you don't even need to do that.

I was in the SCA for a long time. It was always funny when two heavy fighters would pick up some boffers because they would keep hitting each other in the head. I almost got kicked out of a LARP because I couldn't stop myself from doing head shots. Catching a fully speed SCA heavy style head shot to an unprotected head really hurts and can cause nasty damage.

Last night the wife and I did some DDR (we just got Hottest Party for the Wii), and I dropped my calorie intake VASTLY yesterday. Today I've taken my coffee black, and am slamming water to keep me from getting snackish.

I've noticed that DDR really doesn't feel like exercise at all. If only they had a DDR with a more Guitar Hero song list... We just need a 2nd pad so we can both go at the same time and be competitive rather than switching off every couple songs.

EDIT:

Bryan, next time we see you, where/whenever that is, we'll bring DDR, and it's on. ::):

~thud~

That was me falling off the wagon. I could not resist the temptation of homemade birthday cake.

I'll try to get on the stair machine tonight to make up for the guilt.

Remember, healthy weight loss is a marathon, not a sprint. If you stumble, pick yourself up, dust yourself off, and get going again.

I had a muffin with breakfast.

But still, only black coffee, lots of water, light lunch, and microwave pouch with dinner (90 calories of pure vegetable goodness) instead of seconds.

I'll probably end up painting minis with my son (and hopefully wife) instead of DDR however. We'll see how this works out.

I am really wanting DDR for the Wii, just on the assumption that the dance pads will be wireless.

Boffer weapons can be fun. So can shinai (the split bamboo swords used in Kendo), but my favorite style is Rennaisance dueling with schlagers (essentially a rapier blade with rounded edges and a squared-off front instead of a point).

Since it's just us reaperpeeps, noncompetetive, just for exercise, I;m not really worried. If I was going to be fighting for somthing (SCA, larp, etc) I;d worry.

Even a small child can deliver a blow with enough force to burst and ear drum blacken an eye or even break a nose. No matter how non competetive it is if your trying to hit the other person with an object you will eventually hit them in the head with it. Someone will lunge forward when you expect them to back up. They will duck in the wrong direction. It's kinda like assuming flag football without any protective gear is safer than tackle. I've seen people get smacked hard when they were doign slow work even with boffers because someone did something unexpected. I'm not trying to be a jerk nor am I trying to dissuade you from a fun form of exercise or anything I've just seen a few ugly things happen with "only boffers". A couple used hocky helmets could save you some grief. That's all I'm saying.

Sorry, they have cords and plug into the Gamecube controller ports on the side. At least the one that came with Hottest Party did, and it's a Konami brand pad. Maybe the 3rd party one's might have some wireless options, but I wouldn't count on it.

It's still really fun, and the addition of the hand moves creates a whole new thing you gotta keep track of, but can be turned off if you want a little more old school experience.

It has You Spin Me Right Round, which I'm actually hearing from the living room as I type this, and it is an amazingly fun track. I'm gonna go play... ::D:

"You spin me right round baby, right round, like a record baby, right round, round round..."

Ahh, nevermind then. I have Max2 and Extreme for the PS2, and more than enough dance pads to last quite a long time. Maybe I'll pick up Extreme2 or Supernova eventually.

I would never be able to do that song with a straight face anyway. Sorry. I can do the Village People and the eighty covers that have made their way into DDR. Just not that one.
