PaintByNumbers
The miniatures magazines always show miniatures on the tabletop with a background cloth that simulates outdoors -- fields, hills & trees faraway, or a town scape in the distance, etc. Where can you get that sort of thing? The closest I know of is stuff for fish tanks or terrariums; but its not in scale even if it is a natural scene.
Heisler
Most likely they are photographs blown up, but your best bet is to hit the model railroad shops. Not your local hobbby shop that happens to carry trains but one that specializes in trains, they will have these types of backdrops. The local one here is Caboose Hobbies, which claims to be the largest dedicated railroad store in the world. You can check them out online and they do quite the mail order business as well. Joe Kutz
http://www.sceneryexpress.com/products.asp?dept=1100 I use the Mountain and Cloud backdrops quite often. Combine one of those with the Dead Man's Corner ( http://www.sceneryexpress.com/prodinfo.asp?number=FL1003 ) and you can take photos of squads in the scene at various elevations without having to work your own scenic bases for them.
