smithmeg
This is the mini I painted for the Reaper Painting Competition at GenConOz. I was happy to win, even though there were only a few entries, and I was given some comments by the judges that confirmed the things that I already knew needed more work. (I just ran out of time to try and fix them on this mini). I'm looking for any comments, and suggestions that will help me improve. I realise the eyes are ok, but not great, and that everything needs another highlight or 2 (those are the things I didn't have time to change). And, there's a tiny lump of metal on the bridge of her nose (which I might have successfully hidden in the photos) ... but it's there, and it will remind me to clean the next mini better. Oh, and the red boots are cause I'm going to give her to a friend who needed her to have red boots (it really made the colour choice for the rest of the mini rather interesting, but I think it worked in the end ) I need to say a huge thank you to the various people in the Reaper IRC channel for their comments, assistance, and encouragement.
Jabberwocky
Congratulations on the win! Nice bit of painting there. I like the red boots, although I am biased, being from Kansas and all.
tombwalker
Nice paint work. It wouldn't be the tin man or one of the other two that your doing next would it? Your eye work is far better than mine and I always manage to miss something when cleaning a figure. It just goes to show how good you are at painting if you can't tell with her nose! cutebutpsycho
Okay, gonna be a little not so nice here because you've asked for help in improving. The first thing I'd do is not paint the shirt a color so close to the skin. It makes my eyes think she's wearing nothing but ribbons. Maybe a greenish brown? You did do a good job on the eyes, but again being mean, you've got the cat eye thing going. See in the blown up picture how it looks like a straight line on the eye? Try having minis look off to one side or the other for starters. Leave a little white on the bottom of the pupil. If you get the round pupil it looks more realistic. I do think you did a very nice job and I'm only saying those things because you were looking for help. I think it's a beautiful mini and I'm sure your friend will be happy to have her. Voladilk
Having been the judge in the comp, I got to see this model up close and personal. It was far and away the best model on the table presented at GenConOz. In person the colour of the shirt and the skin don't seem to be that close. They are both pale, but the shirt did not disappear to my eyes. It might just be the photo, but I can agree a bit with you CBP. This model took the best in show prize as well for the comp. I will be posting up pics of the winners somewhere here in the next day or two once I get over the travel lag.
wurzel
Very nice job indeed, I like her. I was actually going to enter the comp as well(with my Alastria), but as I could not get any details on how to do so I didn't bother. Again nice work. l33t ninj4
Good job. You've got a very nice pallet, and she's very clean. Who makes her? It looks like a very fun mini to paint.
smithmeg
Thanks for the Comments everyone, And a huge thank you to Voladilk for running the competition. cutebutpsycho - I know exactly what you mean with the eyes, and if these weren't already much better than I usually manage, I would have tried again. I can see what you mean about the closeness of colour in the shirt and the skin, but as Voladilk said, it's better in person (and it's also better in the other set of photos I took in which the boots turned out a horrible orange colour). If I'd had more time I probably would have darkened the shadows on the shirt, which might have helped seperate it more. Who makes her? She's a reaper mini - just lookup Anwyn, or Flute in the figure finder.
cutebutpsycho
Yeah, I know how the camera can play tricks on you. Once, I painted a mini with rosy skin and buckskin pants, and someone thought she was pantsless! In person, it looked like pink and brown next to eachother-not at all similar, but the camera messed with it. And the eyes are VERY good, I just wanted to give you an idea of where to go next. Obviously, you're doing very well with your painting, but it never hurts to take it to the next level :)
paintminion
Improvements huh? Wellll...higher highlights deeper shadows is my usual mantra, but in most cases I think you did okay with dark, it's that glint of highlight you need more in places. The pants are well done, but the belts and satchels need that extra hit, as well as all the reds. Skintone could use some further shadows glazed in there to deine the muscles and face more. Hair definitely needs more highlights to give it better flow and detail. Eyebrows. She needs eyebrows. And doublecheck your moldlines! They show up clearly under her arm. The shirt needs some deeper shadows in the finer creases, something with a bit of cooler brown/gray in it. Nice basework...and that's about all I can nitpick on!
