Princess of Hell

I just started painting Reaper's Princess of Hell for my husband's D&D Epic game. I like how she looks thus far, but I need to blend in better where the colors change to highlights/shadows. I'm still learning about that (thanks Nial for the Compendium!!) I think the hardest part thus far has been painting her thong. I've had to paint it and repaint the skin a few times because the straps are too tiny and my hands shake slightly.

I'll be working on her more this weekend; thus far is about 2 hours work on her. I redid the skirt over and over again and I'm still not happy with it; again the whole blending thing.

I do have a question, however. I have no idea what to paint her top. I was thinking boltgun metal but I'm not sure; any other ideas of what would look nice with this red skirt? My husband wants her whip to be red as well so I'm planning on using blood red on that and I'm excited about the detail on it. I hope I do it justice!!

Here are some pictures of her thus far AND I got to try out my new homemade lightbox that I made with directions from these forums :) I LOVE what it does to the pictures!!!

She's my most favourite mini of all. I need to get another one...

The only suggestion I have is to maybe give her some dark (maybe even black) boots.

She looks dead sexy in black thigh-highs.

You know, actually, that would probably look a lot better because looking at the pics above it seems like they're melding into one; her skirt and boots. Thanks! :D

Yeah, I'm enjoying painting her! She's really challenging and I think she's pretty :D My hubby likes her too lol

No problem.

If you look at the pic on her order page the whip is separated. If you're planning to cut it away so it's like that, do it now. It's gonna need some filing work afterwards. Your sculpt looks nicely unwarped so you might be able to get away with leaving it as it is.

Also, be very careful of her dagger blade. It's easy to snap off and a real pain to re-attach.

The whip actually looks pretty good so I'm not going to get rid of it. Thanks for the warning on the dagger as I was concerned about that. Gah I hope it doesn't come off! LOL

One thing that I have noticed on your reds is that you tend to highlight up to a pink. I learned that if you are going to paint red start with a REALLY deep shade, like a barn or a brick red. Then give it a highlight of a normal red, like flame red or something like that. Then give it a wash of either black or a combo of red/brown or basecolor+black. Then highlight again with the flame red. Instead of adding white to the red to lighten it use a little bit of orange or yellow. About 1 or 2 drops of those colors in your flame red will do wonders! About 4 drops of flame red and 1-2 drops of orange or yellow. Then highlight again, but keeping them just on the edges of each fold and at the bottom of the skirt. Remember to keep your paints thinned with either flow extender or water or a combo of both. I use 3 drops Reaper master series flow extender+4 drops of water and 2 drops of blending medium. This really keeps my paints thinned nicely and lets me work on my blending. I'm still working on that!! LOL! Anyway then you can use 1 or 2 drops of white into your highlight and it wont look pink. You will get a really great looking mini. I'll have to find a mini I did this to and post it up here or on the Show off page so you can see what I did. Hope this helps if you made it this far! LOL! Sorry I was a little long winded there.

Your welcome!

When I get the shakes I do a combination of 3 things

1) Take a break for a minute and stretch my entire upper body back, chest, neck, shoulders, traps and tri, get the blood flowing and remove the tension from my muscles.

2) and/or...Brace/tuck my arms tight in against the side of my body (just the elbow to shoulder part)

3) and/and/or...Have a Guiness or Jack and Coke, I dont know if this really works , but I stop caring so much after a couple iterations of the favorite libations :upside:

I think the top should match the armor on the shoulders and the gauntlets. Maybe something decorative like a layered gold. Its gotta be something a succubus would use to gain/draw her victim's undivided "attention" before she steals their soul....

That sounds like a good idea! My biggest problem is with blending at the moment. I'll probably redo her skirt and do just what you said, lol! :) I never thought of using the darker red and then the lighter. I used scab red for her skirt if I did that and used the blood red for the highlights would that look ok?? I never thought of that >.> LOL

I'll definitely give your idea a try though!!! Thanks :D

Hehe, I'll definitely give those ideas a try. I have no idea why my hands shake but there is always a slight whenever I do anything. I'd probably take advantage of the Smirnoff to calm my nerves ;) LOL but of course I'd stretch out before going that that extreme (though I do like the Smirnoff!) Thanks for the advice, I'll definitely give those a try when I get the hippy shakes XD

You could always go casino showgirl, though that might be a bit to glitzy.

Will be looking out or next installment.

Actually, I think I'm going to do that. I think I'm going to paint her boots black and give her that "show girl" look altogether :D

Something else to consider regarding the shakes...

Make sure you are relaxing your shoulders and back and sitting comfortably as you work. Imagine you are painting a mural on a ceiling - It doesn't matter how steady your hand and arm holding the brush are - if someone is shaking the ladder you are standing on.

If you are tense in your shoulders and hunched over - the exertion of keeping that position will cause you to shake further down the line as it were. Find a comfy sitting position and then position your lights around it - instead of setting up your workstation and then maneuvering yourself to fit into it.

As for bracing - try and see if you can brace your hands together while painting - that way if they move - they both move together - and this will eliminate some of the problems. I kind of end up positioning my hands like I was going to do a bump in volley ball.

Also - a wee dram of scotch can help.

YMMV of course.

Also - try painting the thong first - then painting the flesh tones after - that way you can edge up to the thong as it were...

All that being said - great start - I look forward to seeing her completed.

Which ever one is darkest use that as either your base or shadow. Just remember to use some washes in between the shades to really deepen the shadows, then start with the highlights. I'll paint up a mini using my method and send you a step by step on how I did it. Maybe I'll post it in the tutorials here or on WIP as well. I have to get back to my painting soon! Glad I could be of some help!

I did some more painting on her tonight (3 hours more) to make a whopping total of about 6 hours on her. I redid her boots black and I made a wash out of the base coat of paint I used for her skirt and just went over it. I like how it blended in the highlights and the shadow so it doesn't seem so "odd" and the eye isn't as drawn to it because it's not so bright.

As for her top, I went with the red originally but then I decided to go black. I did the same with her shoulders. The edging on the shoulder armor is "Dwarf Bronze" though the camera makes it look brown.

Finally, I did a flesh wash on top of her skin and I also painted in her hair and eyebrows to be a dark brown. The horns are black and unfinished.

Her gloves are a mix of the "scab red" I used for her skirt and the "dwarf bronze" i used as the edging on the shoulder armor. I haven't done highlighting on the boots yet so they're not "popping" yet :D but I plan to do that tomorrow. I really like the new color scheme on her. I painted her thong black as well :D

Here she is :D
