Heisler
February? You're making announcement for a competition that's not till February? That's right let me repeat that: Genghis Con XXX February 12 - 15th, 2009, Denver Colorado. I do consider Genghis Con to the opening to the painting competition season (bit of bias there I know), but the reason I'm making this post so early is due to a MAJOR change that we will be making to the format of the painting competition. We will still be running our full line up of painting classes with such notable painters as Lili Troy and Doug Jones and hopefully a few additional guest stars. There will be some format changes to the classes as well so I'll make announcements for that as we work out the final details. For the big announcement though read on (its a bit long so hit the restroom and refresh your beverage of choice before continuing). Genghis Con XXX Painting Conference and Competition In celebration of the 30th Anniversary of Genghis Con here in Denver Colorado we would like to announce a major change in the format of the painting competition. This year we will begin the move to an Open or “Chicago” System for the competition. In this type of format you are not judged against the other entries but against your own abilities. This is the format used at the MMSI show in Chicago and is often referred to as the Chicago Format or System. In place of the traditional gaming convention trophy based on category, an entry can be awarded a Certificate of Merit, Pewter, Bronze, Silver or Gold medal. Since you are being judged on your skills there is not limit to the number of medals and COMs that can be awarded. If 5 pieces are judged to be worthy of a Gold medal in the competition then they will each receive a Gold medal. We will use the same category format and judging standards as MMSI: Basic Level: Intended for painters of modest ability. All qualified exhibits receive Certificates of Merit. Judges make their decisions by consensus. General Level: Intended for painters with more developed skills, who don’t feel ready to exhibit at the Advanced Level. All qualified exhibits receive Certificates of Merit or Pewter medals. Judges make their decision by consensus Advanced Level: Intended for painters/modelers of proven abilities. Exhibits at this level are entered in one of three divisions: Open, Painters and Ordnance. All qualified exhibits receive Certificates of Merit, Bronze, Silver or Gold medals. At this level the judges make their own decisions, without discussion, and award a piece 1 – 4 points and note that on their scoring sheet. The awards committee will tally the results, not even the judges will know the results until they are announced. In addition to individual medals we will be awarding Best of Show and Best Theme award. The Best Theme is different than MMSI’s again because we are unable to take advantage of allowing and exhibitor to create an overall display. For Genghis Con XXX the theme will, of course, be Mongols. So we are looking for the best single miniature, diorama or vignette featuring the Mongol warrior or life (Not Mongol Empire, just Mongols). Please feel free to visit the MMSI website for more details of this style competition: http://www.mmsichicago.com . We will post full details of the competition on the DGA’s website at http://www.denvergamers.com later in 2008. We cannot duplicate the system perfectly as we do not have an area that will allow an individual to display all the works they wish to display so we cannot judge an exhibitor’s display. We do have a cadre of very experienced judges and we are confident of their ability to work under the new format. For this show we will also continue with the traditional gaming convention competitive trophy competition. Categories for 2009 will be: Master Class (previous Best of Show winners and the like), Fantasy Single (combined with pre-horse and musket historicals), Science Fiction Single (combined with horse and musket and later historicals), Vehicle Units, Non-Vehicle Units, Machines of War, Large Monster/Large Figures, Dioramas/Vignettes and Juniors. In essence we will be offering a hybrid competition here in Denver and will try and combine the two formats into a hybrid competition. There is no limit to the number of entries that can be considered in the Chicago Format, there is a limit of 2 entries per category in the Trophy competition. All entries will be judged in the Chicago Format first, then entries will be arranged into the correct categories for the trophy competition and judging for that competition will proceed. In addition to the medals, trophies, Best Convention Theme (Mongols) and Best of Show we are hoping to have manufacturers sponsor their own Best of awards (Best Reaper, Best Crocodile Games etc.) I will make announcements for these awards as manufacturers give us their support. Heisler
Since the first post is very long I'll update sponsors here: 9/22/2008 Hasslefree Miniatures - Providing a limited edition Genghis Con XXX 28mm pewter miniature sculpted by Kev White. Still in the design stage but you can count on it being a Mongol (and a fully dressed one at that)! Wargames Factory - Produces 28mm hard plastic historical miniatures - the official manufacturer for the Field of Glory rules. Reaper Miniatures - (Okay so I haven't heard anything but I am Black Lighting so I know I can count on them). 9/30/2008 Adding JMD Miniatures - Providing prizes. This is a French company that does Busts and 54mm miniatures (resin ones I think). Some beautiful stuff. Miniature Mentor - Providing prizes. Sending some of their painting DVDs to use as prizes. Very nice work on these. Updated 10/1/2008 I'm may be in Connecticut but I still have contacts. Joining us this week: Crocodile Games (did you really have any doubt?) - prizes and support Kraken Miniatures - Prizes and support And one of the industry's premier painters will also be in attendance; Marike Reimer. I'll have her chained to a table slaving away instructing painters over the weekend. Updated 10/29/2008 Picked up a little more support today. Covis Belli is on board. They do 15mm Ancients, 28mm Fantasy (Warcrow) and 28mm Sci Fi (Infinity). Looks like we will need to get an updated poster out. Update 10/31/2008 Just received an email from Thunderbolt Mountain saying that they are shipping miniatures for the painting classes. Looks like I will have a lot to carry when the convention rolls around in February. Update 11/4/2008 Okay so the big update this morning: Dragon Blood miniatures, Pulpmonsters and Avatars of War are all sending miniatures for support, mostly for the painting classes. Update 11/30/2008 Joining the horde this past week are: Ultra Forge and GFI (Game Figures Inc, produces minifigs here in the US, along with the old Heritage Dungeon Dwellers line). Update 12/11/2008 So I snagged another sponsor today. Battlefront is joining the lineup of sponsors, providing a bunch of prizes and of course supporting our Flames of War Objective Category Marker category. pae
Come on Kris, you know how much amusement I get out of listening to the judges discuss the miniatures.
Heisler
It is really funny listening to the judges as long as you know they aren't talking about one of your pieces! Oh and a second update, please refer to the 2nd post in the thread. I added JMD miniatures and Miniature Mentor.
Clever Crow
Phil would actually have to paint something first.
dks
The theme is "Mongols"? I thought that the theme would be "XXX". Anyway, I have staked an early claim on my calendar for Genghis Con. I'll see how the winter shapes up in the next few months. Derek
Heisler
The problem with XXX is should it be porno or is it Vin Diesel or is it both? From my own point of few both would be kind of scary. So I settled for the easy way out and went with the Mongol.

ixminis
perhaps "see" was the wrong word... ... I meant to say "Would have to see to believe, but don't take that as a request for pictures"
haldir
Well Vin is a D&D fan........................ I'm seriously thinking about going to this one. I guess depends on the finances & all + I'm not sure if the dark master of the house, aka my wife would approve of me going to more then 1 Con & such. RM EDIT--OUCH then again 337 dollar roundtrip ticket is a bit much
kristof65
EDIT--OUCH then again 337 dollar roundtrip ticket is a bit much Check Amtrak -these days, for some routes, it's cheaper and more comfortable than flying, though it still takes as long as driving. slidedog
Nice to see Marike will be back and I hope dks can make it. Always fun to see in person what everybody comes up with. I did manage to find a mongol model that might look pretty cool when I'm done, but it's not XXX and I'm not enough of a sculptor to make it so... might be able to make it look like Vin Diesel dressed up as a mongol though. Heisler
If you are thinking about attending Genghis Con XXX and have an eye on that Mongol Theme award I have tracked down a number of companies that can help you out. Everything from 25mm up to 70mm along with a number of larger scale busts that are very cool as well. OR perhaps you noticed that there will be a limited edition Mongol miniature being sculpted (if you have read the whole thread then you should know this ) that miniature should be available in late December early January and I will start selling them as soon as we receive them. So if you want your's early to enter into the competition just pay attention to this thread and I'll let you know when they arrive in Denver. I am NOT currently taking pre-orders, we will do that when that part of the website is up and running. If you are interested in the links then I would direct you to the CMPA yahoo group. You will have to join the group to see the links I think, but just join and I'll approve you, well most of you.
