Matte Varnish

Hey guys,

Due to several things, we cannot get Testor's Dull Cote here in Australia anymore.

We also cannot get GW's purity seal here either.

This leaves me in a predicament.

I need a good matte varnish. I am happy to use a brush on one if I have to, but would prefer spray due to the large number of models I need to varnish. Anyone got any advice??

Could you mail order it? It might be pricey, but if you know that you love the stuff you could get several cans at once and save a little on shipping....

Personally I would hate to be without my Dull Cote...

At this point I would suggest getting an inexpensive air brush and using the stuff you can get.

I'm kind of switching over to the Future/Tamiya flat base mix that Jester recommended ages ago. I'm liking it as a brush on but haven't put it through an airbrush yet. Since Jester used to put everything he could (and a few things he couldn't) through his airbrush I'm not that concerned about it working.

I would mail order it, but since one of the chemicals in the Dull Cote was labeled as carcinogenic in Europe, to be able to get it here, I have to have a license to import toxic chemicals.....at the low low price of 700 bucks....not worth it.

I might have to have a look at that mix of Jester's. Will have to see what we can get here that is similar to Future. Dunno if we can get it at all here.

Here's a link that might help you find the same product down there.

I did my measuring the slow, careful, 'count the drop' method but if I were mixing more than just a dropper bottle I would be using volume measures. Err on the side of caution with the flat base, since the worst that can happen then is that it stays slightly shiny.

My current mix is (had to check the label I made, thank goodness for thinking ahead) 1:4 flat base to Future. I shake it really, really well before using. But it seems to have a nice matte finish with no frosting.

Voladilk ... This probably won't help you in the long term, but I've found Dullcote in Toyworld (in the big one with the modelling and collectable stuff in the middle of Brisbane).

It's a white can, rather than the black one I got last time, so I'll compare labels when I get home, and check I didn't buy something strange.

It might be worth ringing a Toyworld near you and seeing if they have (or, can get) some. If you get desperate, I'm happy to go to the one here for you, but they'd then have to be sent to you by Courier - which would probably be horribly expensive).

Thanks for starting this topic ... I've now got enough Dullcote to last me at least a couple of years ::): (which, at the speed I paint, is only 4 cans).

Thanks for all the posts guys. Gives me someplace to start looking and seeing what I can get. Will give a ring to toyworld tomorrow and see whether they have it. If not, I might see what I can find for the other options. If I crap out, I will get you to send me some Smithmeg.
