If we, would you?

  1. 1. If we were to take select show off pictures and post them to the painted gallery, would you mind? (Full attribution, of course)

    • I think that's a great idea!

I read the question, I pondered it briefly, and voted. I'm one of the two people thus far that have voted against it. Here would be why:

The people who's work is currently in the Painted Gallery are paid for the efforts, it's their place to shine. Besides, it shouldn't be our, the general forum users, choice. It should be the choice of the painters who's work is already represented in the Gallery. No offense to my fellow posters, but if we're truly good enough to be in the gallery, don't you think that someone from Reaper would've started banging on our doors for our precious bits of painted metal?

The Show Off section can be searched like any other forum and so long as people remember to put the proper name of the miniature somewhere either in the title, subtitle, or thread itself, you can always find a painted example of a miniature.

I totally disagree with you Helltown. Those that are currently shown in gallery recieve the added benefit of monetary compensation I believe. Establishing a Fans Gallery is a great idea. In my opinion some who are not in the gallery are as good as some that are. The fact that Reaper hasn't tapped them to be a part of the gallery group in no way says that they are not good enough. Reaper can't be paying all that might be deserving.

Not everyone whose work is in the painted gallery is given monetary compensation. I'm not going to go into the details, because it's not information I feel that I can freely divulge.

I personally think that there should be a panel of artist (composed of those who have painted for Reaper) who should nominate and approve fan submissions, but I know that there are some who strongly disagree with this.

So I'm asking all of you. If we were to take some of the paint jobs that we like especially and post them to the mini gallery, would you mind?

I don't have anything in the Show Off section right now, but I know I would be flattered if it ever occured that you wanted to use any of my stuff in the Gallery.

I'm very much for this, especially for those miniatures that have no pro-painted version available AT ALL in the Figure Finder. Searching the Show Off forum just isn't good enough, either, because people don't always label their posts in a way that lets you find the mini you're after.

Some visual indicator in the Figure Finder to indicate which photos are from Reaper-hired painters, and which are from Show Off, should be good enough to give the pros special attention.

Helltown, does it make a difference to you that Anne Foerester strongly advocated this plan, and even posted that fan-painted minis shouldn't be separately marked, so they shine just as much as the pro-painted ones?

Speaking purely from a personal standpoint, I do not agree that there needs to be special attribution if a picture came from Show Off. Reaper's very talented and devoted long-term staff freelancers (Derek Schubert, Marike, Liliana...) get no credit other than their names; I do not think it would be fair to do otherwise for others who have their models featured.

Look before you quote, MamaGeek; someone was saying that pictures from Show Off should receive extra attention, and Anne was saying pictures from Show Off shouldn't receive special attention, not the other way around. She didn't say anything on whether fan painted pictures should shine as much as the professional pictures, but definitely that the fan pictures shouldn't shine more than the professional ones. ::D:

Actually ATM, I made the original suggestion that the Show-Off ones be marked. I made the suggestion mostly because I wanted a way to to distinguish between those and the pro-painted, Reaper Commissioned ones, not that I felt that they needed any sort of special attention. Then Anne came along and pointed out that marking just the show off ones would be tantamount to giving them special attention, at which point I chimed back in and suggested that both be marked as to source, so the casual browser could tell the difference.

My thinking was never to highlight one group over the other, but merely that if you don't somehow designate the differences between them, eventually someone is going to to think that all of them were pro-painted on commission from Reaper, or that none of them were, niether of which is fair to either group.

Edited for clarity of intent.

Of course the term " Professional" is subjective. I paint for commission all the time and therefore can be termed professional. So no doubt there are other "professionals" that post in the Show Off that aren't in the gallery and some that may not be professional that are included. Sorry but for anyone to say that the very people who are reaper's bread and butter should not recieve any special attention especially if they can paint reaper mini's to a level that equals some of the ones that do is wrong in my opinion

I'm all for getting more painted minis to view. There's many a time when I'm looking over a mini and would love to see a painted version to see what someone else did.

If the Show Off ones are in a different part of the screen and clearly marked as such I don't see an issue. The Reaper commissioned ones would be on the top billing and the Show Off at the bottom. Simple.

And, just as others have re-stated for clarity:

My opinion is that the people who paint professionally for us deserve their own publicity, and that publicity needs to be above and beyond, because they often work for us for extremely discounted rates (sometimes for free!) in exchange for the name recognition we can give them or even just to help out a frazzled Anne. :;): Whether they do it because they want to help or they actually accept money or product for it, the fact remains that being in the official Reaper Gallery is part of their "payment".

I have re-checked with Ed and (thread-o-mancy aside) The Plan is to have two Galleries: the Official Reaper Gallery peopled by the awesome and talented members of the Reaper Freelancing Team (plus Anne and John, who are just paint slaves :;): ) and a separate "Inspiration Gallery" which will draw upon the best of the Show Off forum and fan submissions to give people more painted models for inspiration in painting their own. ::):

In this way, fans can contribute and actually get their work posted on the Reaper site, and the Reaper Team which works so very hard at ReaperCon and has contributed so much to our Gallery still gets the recognition they deserve.

For technical particulars, you will need to wait and see, as Ed told me there are other priorities in Kit's queue right now; Ed also told me that anyone who wants to ask him about it personally can find him in the Beekeepers forum. ::):
