Doug's Workshop
Last month, I finished a bunch of goblins. I plan on running the Rise of the Runelords for my group, so figured part of my campaign prep would be to knock out some of these little buggers. I've got some more goblins (from Paizo), but I'll add them in a response post. Enjoy! -Doug
MamaGeek
Excellent painting. They look like formidable critters to harry your party. Great job! My only criticism lies with the bases. The grass is just so perfect. Static grass tends to work better in little clumps with dirt in between. It looks natural, just a little too nice for nasty goblins! Doug's Workshop
I liked the cartoony nature of these guys. Paizo did a really good job of reimaging them for their Pathfinder game. They're on 20mm round bases. These also show off an attempt at source lighting. A word to the wise: The orange color of fire tends to disappear when applied to ochre-colored skin. The blue-grey guy has the most visible effect, but the others have it too. Trust me. I also used some rust wash on the blades to hint that these guys don't keep their equipment up to snuff. I thought about going over the blades again, but I didn't want to totally get away from the metallic effect. More like a "left out in the rain a few times" effect. Enjoy. Comments/tips/criticism/accolades are always welcome and appreciated! -Doug ps: A special thanks to Reaper for allowing their boards to be used to show off other manufacturer's minis.

It looks natural, just a little too nice for nasty goblins! Thanks. I have usually used static grass in smaller clumps. The problem I had here is that the minis themselves were painted fairly drab, and more drab earth didn't look right to me. I chose the contrast instead of making these guys blend in to their environment. Good catch, though. -Doug
JoeGKushner
That's an interesting batch there. Thanks for sharing. What's the company? Are they Reaper or ? Thanks again.
Doug's Workshop
Joe: The original post are Reaper's. The second batch (with the torches) is manufactured by Crocodile Games under license from Paizo (paizo.com). -Doug
bikerdrew
These are great sculpts and you've painted them very well - really good work. I like the light source effect - it's something I've never tried. Can you suggest a good tutorial for it?
Doug's Workshop
Bikerdrew, I actually took a class from Noel Meyer a couple years ago at GenCon. Not exactly linkable. However, I did find a basic tutorial over at Brushthralls: here. The 'beginning' level of source lighting isn't difficult, since I painted the miniature just as I normally would and then went back with orange and yellow glazes to place the glow from the torch. I think the difficult part was to get it all looking right, because I couldn't highlight the rest of the mini to overshadow the highlights from the torch! In the end, I've decided that yellow-based skin colors are not good for orange sourced light. If I do it again, they'll all be blue-grey goblins! Ochre-goblins go about during the day, grey goblins come out at night. Cheers, and thanks for the comments! -Doug
dewen
Nice work. I have been checking these models out for a lil while. I really like the sculpts on these goblins.
DavidVC04
I love 'em! Nice work with the OSL and skin tones.
Sanael
The Reapers are awesome stuff...and although I see the problem with the ochre, I still think that OSL looks pretty good. I'm not real concerned by the "niceness" of the grass, but I'd like to see a bit more of the lighting effect get to the grass as well as the mini; right now, it looks like a goblin in a cave and a meadow at noontime, which is a little odd. I think my favorite is the little guy next to the blue torch-bearer. I like his face, and I really like the shadows on him. Now I need some of these goblins! Jabberwocky
Fine work on the subtle OSL.
