demonelf3
Thanks Jab. The spot on the waist is part of round 2 GS which I have yet to do. I hate GS sooo much. The cloak's back, which was highlighted with adding yellow, is streaky but I don't knoww why. I think it's because yellow iss so translucent. I'll rebasecoat those parts and highlight more. Thanks again for the reply.
Renowyth
When taking a class at GenCon last year on painting patterns, I was trying to paint some RMS yellow of some sort over a dark green. It just wasn't working. A very nice person in the class handed me their Vallejo yellow, which is more opaque. I was able to get the freehand to appear. I'm not doing enough freehand yet to warrant getting more paint, but it was a nice tidbit to file away in the back of my mind. No idea if it will help with your streaking... demonelf3
Funny you say that, the yellow I used IS VMC, Lemon Yellow. I just have to be more careful and consistent. Thanks though. Will you be at GC this year?
Renowyth
Will you be at GC this year? Unfortunately, looks like life is leaning towards not. Gives me more time to practice painting. Maybe the next time I go I'll be brave enough to enter the painting contests...
demonelf3
Yeah, I know how it is. =( Sucks man, hopefully next year. Anywho, I did some more terrain work, as I'm holding off on the elf, figuring him out I guess. The troll is primed, and now that I've seen the GS work, I'd say it's mediocre AT BEST. I'm displeased. But hey, it's all learning, so meh. The back and waist came out decent, but the belly and arms came out subpar. Sigh. Some pics, with the troll pinned in but not glued. Dramatic lighting, lol. The rocks were done with a bc of brown liner, a shade of pure black, a highlight up to driftwood, then rust, then glazes of rainy grey. I still need to glaze in more grey. Barely seen is the early stage hill on elf territory.
DavidVC04
Awesome stuff. Keep up the momentum!
demonelf3
Put in more work to the landscape, and I picked up the scenic express super tree kit. Looks great. I'll post the trees when they're done, and I am very excited. Here I have sculpted the hill, but as usual it's hard to see. Good pics eventually, I swear. ;) The gravel, which is actually fine sand from the local playground, was basecoated with 70:30 VMC smoke:Brown Liner. Then drybrushed with driftwood, then add linen white, then pure linen. Gives a nice brown. The river bed is slightly different, with a basecoat of desert khaki with a touch of Brown liner, and then drybrush up to desert sand. The grass is citadel burnt satic grass, applied with Aleene's Tacky glue. I'm happy to be making progress.
Jabberwocky
Looking good! Very natural appearing.
demonelf3
Done some more landscaping. The leaves were done by using Hudson and Allen punch out red maples on a drop of aleene's tacky glue. Once the glue dries (tomorrow) they'll be painted more subdued reds and oranges. The reeds in the water, a bit hard to see, were snipped from an old brush with very very long bristles, and are unpainted. I may go green or leave them as is. Here you can see the hill better. Barely seen are the holes drilled to acommadate the three trees. I need to find a suitable bowl, that will never be used for eating again, to make the trees, cause I have to dip them in matte medium. DIP. Not brush on. I think I'll finish the land before I move on to the figs again. Need time to think on them.
demonelf3
Okies, so here goes. Relatively large update. Planted the trees, and I love how they came out. VERY messy though, I had to do almost everything in my backyard... at 40 degrees... in a t-shirt. But it was totally worth it. =P So here they are, a bit sparse (intentional). I may plant one more to fill out the treeline but that's up in the air. I also picked up a troll impaler because he's awesome. I wanted to get the troll bouncer too but I didn't find him. Oh well. Tree process: Buy scenic express tree armatures. Mix up some matte medium and water. Dip trees. Flock trees. Dry trees. Drill hole for trees. Widen hole with reverse tweezers. Mist with matte medium to seal. Plant trees. Enjoy.
Sanael
Those are some nice trees. Me likee. I also really like the fallen leaves; that landscape is a nice place for a battle. Not sure about painting the reeds; brown is probably fine, but I'd like to see them highlighted a bit regardless, I think. I do keep thinking, just to make your life more complicated, that you should make fish happen in the river...it'd be neat to see little flashes of silver spreading out and away from that big fella. But I have no idea how you could achieve that effect easily. And the impaler is one of my favorites...painted one a while ago. This is looking great so far! Keep it coming! demonelf3
Yeah, fish would definitely add a nice touch to it. Since I have almost no sculpting skill, maybe I can find some fish already sculpted. I'll ask around. I'm glad you like it so far, and thanks for the reply. Nissiana
Bruce Hirst has a relatively easy suggestion for making fish out of Sculpey on his website about a quarter of the way down this page. Since you can bury them in your water material, you don't need a ton of sculpted detail. Might save you some trouble finding fish in the right scale! Bumble_B
Looking damn good. My only concern is with the trees. They are awesome looking the and leaves on the ground look a lot better now that they are in place, my only concern is with the width of the trunks. Maybe it's just because the trolls are the only minis in there but the tree trunks look very thin. I look at my hand vs a tree trunk and judge the size. Then probably take an elfs hand and stick it next to one of those trees to get a size comparison. Maybe I am off.
Sanael
I dunno...with the height of these trees, I can totally buy that this is newer growth of a more slender type of tree...these are definitely not oaks or the like, but might be something in the birch family. Even maple can be this slender at this height.
