SIGIL
Just wondering if there are any fans here?
sethohman
I liked it - it was a very different take on D&D. It had a whole post-apocalypse feel to it, which is cool. My favorite genre is post-WW3 stuff, so seeing it put into fantasy terms was very cool. And the fact mages did not dominate the game, either. You had to be careful, and had fewer spells than the normal magic-user. Online Dragon 364 (June 2008) had three plants from Athas updated to DD4. In a section called Campaign Classics. So, while it may not be officially released into 4, there may be enough content online to play it in 4. For the alternate worlds (beyond Greyhawk / Forgotten Realms), Ravenloft was always my favorite. Even more hopeless feeling than DS, everything there was nasty is some form or another. But while DS was nasty, in your face style, RL had that I'll bee your friend, then turn you into undead feel.
anvil
I loved the first bunch of Dark Sun with all the Brom art. I ran a couple of campaigns back in the day. I read every book, every source book cover to cover, and I still have all the miniatures. The dragon king sits on my show off shelf even now. Not since Greyhawk defined the D&D game has there been as inventive a universe, in my opinion, of course. Forgotten Realms always seemed too generic to me, and as I'm not into horror, Ravenloft left me cold as well.
joshuaslater
I liked the ideas and the models, but wouldn't buy any books for it now. There's a Savage Worlds version of it someone did online, so it's there if I need it. I love the Post Apocalyptic Fantasy genre. I bought Desolation, the role-playing game, and the Dark Legacies books. They come close to my vision of this genre. It's definitely a niche combining Gamma World with Dungeons and Dragons. As for you Tre, you've seen what my Wasteland is shaping up to be!!
Erion
I was always a big fan of Dark Sun. I keep hoping that's what the big surprise 4th Edition Campaign Setting is for next year.
Moderator TaleSpinner Posted April 6, 2009 Moderator Share Posted April 6, 2009 I played a bit of Dark Sun in the '90s. Mostly, I bought the Dark Sun source material and incorperated what I liked into my own psionic heavy world. It was a great concept, but I had a hard time finding others who wanted to play it. I still have it all...somewhere in the basement. TS
Reaper User ReaperDarryl Posted April 7, 2009 Reaper User Share Posted April 7, 2009 nothing quite like having to carry 10 bone weapons because your constantly breaking them :P
sethohman
Always supposed to upgrade to the obsidian weapons.
SIGIL
Yeh I think the weapon breaking was bit over done. I DID like the idea of the primitive weapons though. I especially liked the way that a broken, corroded metal weapon was the equivalent of a magic weapon.
Reaper User ReaperDarryl Posted April 7, 2009 Reaper User Share Posted April 7, 2009 yeah it was always beautiful when someone used glass steel to make your glass blade metal strong, best way to make a half giant cry with joy
cerebro1974
My olderbrother was heavy into DS, but I went to Ravenloft for a bit, then back to Greyhawk.

Qwyksilver
I have all the novels, and bought the campaign world books when they came out because I loved how it was so different from the medieval european fantasy, but the guys I played with back in the day didn't want to do anything SO different. Maceswinger
sorry not my cup of tea. I was mostly playing my own world and some FR or Ravenloft during the 90's.
haldir
DS was different for it's time. I played a few games. Always was a Mul for some reason..... While my fantasy fav will always be Tolkien-ish fantasy. I'm always up for something different & such. RM
