Shifter? Need a model for one of those new Hinky 4th ed Races

Recommended Posts

I think the title is pretty dead on. I need a model with long hair, pointed ears, and a beard. Long Tooth or Razor claw suggestions would be nice.

I've been using elves and just sort of scruffing them up.

I always thought Piotr Irongale looked Shifter-y.

Otherwise, yeah, elves with painted or sculpted on hariy patches. Especially Bobby Jackson's later elves - they have an etheral quality about the face that makes for excellent Eladrin or Shifter (with the right paintjob.)

Shifter is a race originally from the Eberron setting of D&D 3.x which also made its way into 4e. They are fundamentally "lycanthropically descended non lycanthropes". That is, they have some were- traits without being full weres. Some shifter types appear to have traits of Wolves, such as longer jaws and fierce cutting teeth, and other have Feline traits, like claws and softer body fur.

Similar to this.

Simplistically, they're "half werewolf" or "half-weretiger". There was a very long explanation in the Eberron setting book, where they had their own lands and cultures etc.

A longer explanation can be found here.

Wait a minute. It sounds like Shifter's were a shifty way of bringing furries in to D&D.

GAH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Seriously, after reading Bryan's description and looking at a few of those pictures, I'd second Bryan's Piotr recommendation.

Don't forget you could probably get away with a Lion-Man or armored Lupine model if you think you'll be headed towards the prestige class that is aimed that way as well. Other than that I know a lot of minis aren't sculpted with beards, but a bit of quick paint work can scruff up any model quickly and easily.

Back on topic: I'd recommend West Wind Games "Death Elves" for a model close to the pic Bryan linked up. They've got the right face for it. I did break out my bootleg copy of the 4.0 books looking for it until I reread Bryan's post to see it's an Eberron thing.

Hope that helps in your search.

Depending on what sort of shifter character you're trying to do, you could get away with doing a bit of knifework on some of the half-orcs or maybe even orcs...

What class and weapons are you going for?

It's probably going to be easier to find a class/gear aprropriate mini and then modify it into a Shifter...
