Warzone and CAV

Recommended Posts

Well, I've shanghaied two friends into CAV. We all play Ultimate Warzone and Chronopia, as well as Spinespur and many other games.

The reaction to CAV was instant fun. My friends Dave and Dodge are hardcore gamers who play more games than I've even heard of. They are pretty good at picking up games and dissecting them immediately, and learning the ins and outs faster than any others I've met.

I had mixed feelings about the RAGE mechanic after playing Warlord. To me, it still doesn't hold a candle to Chronopia, but CAV is a whole 'nother animal.

I have a feeling we may find more players in our circle who will dig CAV.

It has way more depth than I realized now that I'm learning the game with these two, and if our efforts at bringing twenty one gamers together for a yearly event in our community are any indication, I have a feeling we'll do the same for CAV.

Now to get busy painting and cooking up army lists.

Woo hoo!!

Congratulations! Its always great to get new people playing this addictive game. The more we get playing the more we have push to keep this baby growing. And CAV is an awesome game.

I don't think RAGE works as well for Warlord, either. I am not that big a fan of Warlord (fun, but better games). But, for CAV, it is a great mechanic.

Glad to have you in the CAV arena!

They got on here without me even tellin'em!!

I'm up at a ridiculous hour looking at data cards and figuring out what I want to field. Dave is former Air Force, and is going with Terran. Dodger is going Ritterlich, 'cause he's German!!

Since I play Brotherhood in Warzone, I guess Templars aren't too far of a stretch for me.

Dave is a great painter and will prolly put his CAVs in the Show Off section soon.

You guys are going to want to get signed up on Mil-Net then too. There's a lot of background and optional rules over there, including the source books.

Got those already. Helpful, but I have a feeling we will be bringing some more noise upon takeoff. The gaming boards shown in that link above are what we rock out on, and organizing events is cake with those handy.

All it took was putting a starter box in Dave's hands, and now it's fasten your seatbelts.

We're thinking of running some CAV at our next Talamania event, but as a side to the main courses.

Our record is twenty one players with one guy flying in from Sweden. I'm curious if the CAV community puts on events like ours.

Community run? Not that I know of. Since CAV is still supported by Reaper's Black Lightning demo team there's really no reason for it. Most major conventions can get a BL member there to run events if they want, and most of who are active in the program already run events at all of the cons in our local area.

You're comparing apples to oranges. Why would anyone pay to travel cross-country to a fan-run CAV event when in 2 weeks they could fly to Dallas and go play at ReaperCon? Or go play at GenCon later this summer?

Local events are great, and they're needed in order for a game to survive, but to expect people to spend hundreds or thousands of dollars to attend a fan-run event is unrealistic when there's already 2 such options that exist, and which are supported by the company that makes the game.

I have to agree with Chrome here. Warzone and Chronopia are essentially dead games, with no company of which I'm aware actively producing models or rulebooks for them. Reaper at least still makes new models for CAV even if their support for the game overall in the last couple of years has been somewhat lacking (at least in my opinion, but this isn't the place for that discussion).

If I was going on a significant trip to play CAV, I would very likely head to Reapercon (if they'd let me in the door ::D:) where I can meet the people behind the game and maybe even throw some dice with them, rather than a fan-sponsored event someplace else.

Don't get me wrong. Fan-events have their place. They're the life force of Blood Bowl (since GW does NOTHING to support specialist games beyond selling models long in production), among many others. But I don't think the world is ready for CAV-con just yet.

And just to further clarify my position, I was only referring to the question that you asked, if there were any community run events where people traveled long distances too. I in no way meant to infer that fan-run events were unneeded or unwanted. That couldn't be farther from the truth.

I want you to run CAV at any and all gaming get-togethers that you play at! If you attend/run enough of them though, do yourself a favor and look into joining Black Lightning.

One thing about the fan stuff. I can fly to a city (or drive), split a room with someone or crash, play games for a couple of days, with no crowds or con fees and go on with my life. with Gencon, it's a lot more involved and a lot more expensive. :)

Well, we have people that have flown in from as far away as California, and Sweden, to play at our event. I guess they come in because we put our friends up for free, have incredible gaming, and a lot of fun.

I'm sure there are some fan run events, posted on these boards, but I haven't started looking into this until now.

In any event, if we continue having as much fun with the game and grab a few more players, we may do a similar event, or run CAV at our own for those who want to play.
