HBO's A Game of Thrones

OK so they are certainly starting to stray from the books or I am just remembering way wrong. I seem to remember Renly being quite the swordsman and lady's man and not batting for both teams. Same with the knight of flowers. I don't really care for that.

I did like that we got to see Ned and Jamie tangle. I always thought that scene in the book could have been handled better.

Also, wasn't Ned taken into custody after that little jaunt. I wonder if they are going to let him live and take the role that Robb took in the novels?

The knight of flowers was most definitely gay, but it wasn't revealed until one of the later books IIRC. I loaned my copy of the book to a friend so I couldn't go check for that scene between he and Renly.

OK. Now that you bring up the Sir Loras I do remember but I can't remember Renly ever doing anything like that.

...Well I did some online research and apparently he was...

I never seemed to pick that up in the novel, hmmm.

I now want Jaime to DIAF. As if I didn't have reason enough.

LOL, you and Aerys II the Mad King would have gotten along great!

If you're looking for color palettes for Game of Thrones, you really should look at the GRR Martin line of figures that Dark Sword Miniatures offers. There are lots of painted images on their site of some really beautiful figures of the Game of Thrones characters. They are original works, done before the series came out. Lots of stuff from Tom Meier and Jeff Grace.

Those sculpts really are great; I have the whole range so far and no plans to stop collecting them. Some of the painted minis on their site are really amazing too; lots of them are done my Marike Reimer among other great painters. They've even got some shots of Anne's Cersei/Melisandre diorama. There are also colour scheme suggestions directly from GRRM on Dark Sword's site, but only minis from the 1st wave they released are covered. Although at some point I asked on their forums if more were ever likely to show up, and Jim (owner) posted some notes some of their painters had gotten from GRRM; a bit of searching may still be able to turn those up if anyone's interested. Dark Sword's latest e-newsletter also mentions that GRRM showed some of the minis to the people designing the look of the series, so even though the minis are based on the books and not the show, some of the characters in the show might look a little bit more similar to the minis than one might expect.

About Loras & Renly: that scene was definitely not in any of the books; it's one of several sex scenes so far that have been added for the TV series (lots of non-sex scenes have been added as well, but it's all stuff that could easily have been happening in the books during some other characters' PoV chapters. Some of these scenes are really great, like the conversation between Littlefinger and Varys in the same episode). But this relationship is at the very least hinted at in the books. Took me 3 reads of books 1-4 before I caught a whiff of it though (just began Storm of Swords on my 4th time through since getting A Game of Thrones from my sister for Christmas in 2005, in anticipation of Dance with Dragons coming out this July, and it's still getting better each time!), and from what I've seen online I'm not alone in that regard...

But (SPOILER ALERT!!! STOP READING *NOW* IF YOU HAVEN'T READ ALL THE BOOKS!) Renly does eventually leave a virgin widow behind, Loras gets... unusually upset... when Sansa mentions to him how sad Renly's widow must be about his death, and at some point Jaime threatens Loras that he'll shove his sword somewhere 'even Renly never found' or something to that extent (not sure how I missed that one the first 2 times!). IIRC Loras also mentions having spent the night before Renly died with him in his tent, goes berzerk and kills several people when he learns about Renly's death, mentions a couple times later on how much he loved him, etc. I guess I had just chalked it all up to extreme patriotism or maybe some sort of platonic Sam & Frodo thing or whatever, but if you're looking for it when you read the books, it's definitely not something HBO came up with on their own. Some people might even think Renly's "rainbow guard" in book 2 was a hint, but IMO that probably has more to do with Westeros' worship of the Seven, where refractive crystals are commonly used to shine rainbows around the sept during sermons/ceremonies, etc. I'm just not sure why HBO made it so much more obvious in he show than it was in the books; the look Loras and Renly shared when Loras gave Sansa the red rose and that (also added) exchange between Littlefinger and Renly after Loras unseated the Mountain in the Hand's tourney in and of themselves were way more obvious that it seemed to me in the books, so that scene with the two of them together almost felt like they were hitting me over the head with it. Not complaining though; as I mentioned in an earlier post, Littlefinger stealing (and abridging) the Hound's best lines in the whole book during the previous episode was far more objectionable from where I sit, and even that was only a minor grumble.

Also, wasn't Ned taken into custody after that little jaunt. I wonder if they are going to let him live and take the role that Robb took in the novels?

No, that happens a bit later on; Ned's recovered from his wounds a bit, Robert has forgiven him and made him Hand again, and Robert has also already returned from his boar hunt by that time. As for the change you're wondering about, shifting a few lines from one character to another and adding a few scenes that might easily have happened 'off-camera' in the books is one thing, but doing something like that would break the whole story, and definitely get them hunted down by mobs of irate fans.

All in all, I thought episode 5 was freakin' awesome! We're halfway through now, and it should only get better and better from here on... Can't wait 'til next Sunday!

Episode 7 was even better, except that the first scene with Littlefinger was a little uncomfortable to watch. It seems that HBO is trying to keep up w/Starz' Spartacus in the soft porn category. Not that I'm a prude; its just getting frustrating explaining to my wife how much of this stuff isn't in the book.

That's actually turning me off as well. I just feel like it's going to overshadow what's really good in the show.

I just saw on CNN that A Dance With Dragons is being released on July 12th! So at least if HBO continues the series it'll get another season or two before they catch up to him. I was looking at the 4th book just yesterday and was dumbfounded that it'd been 6 years since it was released.

Yup, the longish wait has been discussed at length elsewhere, but the good news is that the July 12 date isn't yet another false alarm (there have been several of these from various sources that people maybe should have wondered about a bit more before inadvertently pre-ordering online several years ahead of publication); it's a real, carved in stone, official release date, at last! For me though, the hardest part will be waiting several months after that for the paperback edition I'll be reading...

I liked episode 7 too, and episode 8 should be even better. IIRC it's the one that was scripted by GRRM himself, so it ought to be a real killer!
