Hi guys, I was wondering how would you go about filling pinholes and just overall roughness from sanding i am working on a GW 09 games day mini and i don't want to screw this up it is metal.

I have another model that I am testing on I used a brush on sealer and mixed a wash into it to help dye the sealer should i just do this or buy milliput and if i should buy milliput what type i was thinking superfine as i have heard people complaining it becomes a paste almost i am thinking that would be a good thing for solving my issue.

i would post pics but as its all just bare metal it won't come out.

thank you all.

Hi Hadier!

I use one of two ways to deal with pitting. Standard Grade Milliput, the yellow/gray stuff (used as a wash) for large areas or Vallejo Gloss Varnish if I am already in the middle of painting and it's just a tiny spot that I missed during prep.

I was one of the folks who does not like the Superfine Milliput. I have tried to use it for washes, but it absorbs too much water to quickly breaking into an almost cottage cheesey mess. The standard grade is firmer and bleeds into the wash water slower and hence makes a more homogenous mix.

I mix a little bitty bit of the Milliput, about the size of a pea, and stick it to the top of a bottle cap or something. Using the back end of a brush make a deep dimple in the center of the Milliput ball and add a drop of water. Stir it (use a cruddy brush) till you get a milky looking wash. Then brush it on in layers. You have to let it dry completely before you can sand and smooth it. Go slowly though, because it is easy to find yourself rushing it and over apply. Then it pools in places you don't want it to and obscures details in the sculpt.

Good Luck!

Jen

I have done the same thing with Vallejo plastic putty, which is what our local store carries.

Usually I'd say take it back for a replacement, but that probably isn't going to be possible with this limited ed. mini... ::(:

I haven't used the Vallejo Plastic Putty yet, but it comes highly recommended by Aaron Lovejoy. I have used Liquitex matte or gel medium to fill pinholes. Just thin a little with water and brush it on. It may take a few applications but it self-levels and fills the pinholes. I did this on the bomber Sophie's wings for my RCon entry.

Another Liquitex product is mentioned here, though I haven't used it so YMMV: http://www.antsnest.net/Garage/Pinholes.php

To combat roughness you can also gently polish the mini with steel wool (very fine grade) or some fine brass wire (like Dremel brushes, etc.) Another thing to try is metal polish with an old toothbrush.

Later,

Laszlo

actually i tryed a brss brush and thats one reason i have to milliput it. it put some scratches into it but its working i just had to do a few layers you know "paint" the slurry on, let it dry and keep going.
