wildbill
Hi! I'm new to the game, and looking at drafting a couple of lists to start with. When I saw the bear cavalry, I figured I would give a Dwarf list a try. This is just a conceptual list, not played at all, but I would be interested in people's opinions on how well it would work. Bears & Burrowers - 998 points Troop 1 Ursula, Bear Rider Durthen, Boarmaster Bear Rider x 5 Musician Troop 2 Abjorn Hofkeg, Miner Magical Weapon Gilam, Rune Spelunker Miner x 5 Musician Troop 3 Dire Bear Troop 4 Stone Spirit Troop 5 Luck Stone The list is pretty simple, taking advantage of natural synergies, if perhaps a bit light on numbers: two units of 7, and two monsters, very limited range attacks (just Gilam's spells, pretty much). Critiques are welcome. Since I own a bazillin (+1! ) Bear Riders and haven't used them much since Warlord Second Edition came out (I'm enjoying using the other models too much!), I think I'm going to steal this army list. The one change I would make is the Magical Weapon. I would give the Miners a Standard instead, but that is just me. I want to make sure that I can have them pop up and smack around any big bad monster that you might have on the board. I take a unit like that Miner one all of the time (as well as the Stone Spirit and Dire Bear ). Thanks for thinking of it. Wild Bill

Wild Bill Hi Wild Bill, Well, I will defer to your experience as to whether a Standard would be superior to the Magical Weapon. I don't have any of the models from this list as of yet, but I will start collecting them. Since I dislike duplicate models and am not likely to be competing in any official events, I may tap into other model companies to get a better diversity. In particular I'm looking at Scibor Miniatures, for the dwarven miners (to go with the Miner and Alt. Miner sculpt from Reaper), and possibly some of Scibor's bear cavalry (although they are rather expensive). I also may pick up Privateer Press' Brun and Lug, and use Lug as a Dire Bear. Now, I'm thinking of designing a Darkspawn list to fight against this one, but I'll post that in the appropriate thread.
jdripley
Lug's gonna be a good fit as a proxy of a Dire Bear. Check out a comparison photo - sorry for the poor quality, but it's just a quick photo to demonstrate size.

Check out a comparison photo - sorry for the poor quality, but it's just a quick photo to demonstrate size. Yeah, that does look pretty close in scale. Is anyone aware of other 'bear cavalry' models? I'll pick up some of the Reaper ones, definitely, but the Scibor miniatures bears, while beautifully detailed, don't really look like bears. I think it has something to do with the very pointy noses. I'd like to get a bit more variety in the force than what the Reaper line allows for (preferably without doing a lot of conversion work), so I would appreciate it if anyone can point me in the direction of some other models. A while ago (ok, so quite a few years actually) Grenadier put out a series of Dwarf Bear Riders. They were mostly one-piece models and the bears were somewhat smaller scale than the Reaper bears. I also have a Bear Rider mini that is very close in scale to the Reaper ones and is two-piece (detached rider) but I cannot for the life of me figure out where he came from..... wildbill
There are 4 bear riders offered by Reaper. 1 is Ursula, the captain, so she doesn't really count. Here are the links to the three different ones: Link #1 Link #2 Link #2 I have a mix of all 3 riders, but mostly the first one. When I went to ReaperCon a couple of years ago, I traded in many pounds of minis and got Reaper to make a casting run of Thorvalds just for me. DanyBoy
Two weeks from now Im getting together with some friends to play a few 500 point games. Games will last 5 to 6 turns and my army has to be able to hold real estate and be able to take the offensive. This is the army Im thinking of bringing to the table: Dwarves - 500 points Troop 1 Logrim Battlefury Warrior x 5 Halberdier x 2 Piercer x 2 Margara Firetongue Troop 2 Griffon Thanks for any feedback! Stubbdog
Your list is not bad at all. But, in small sided games, Dwarves own the table with the elementals. If you want to see your opponents crying go with the elementals. Maybe something like this: Dwarves - 499 points Troop 1 Gargram Heavyhand - Armor of Courage Margara Firetongue Mancatcher x 2 Warrior Troop 2 Tohil Steadyhand Klaus Copperthumb Mancatcher x 2 Warrior Troop 3 Earth Elemental Troop 4 Earth Elemental Equip Luck Stone ------------------------------ 4 troops 12 models (27 DTs) You have a decent long range shooter, a good short range shooter and a great spellcaster. Hit the enemy with the disablers and then bring in your DR2 elementals.
wildbill
This should be the best of both worlds. It has Elementals and can go on the offensive as well as hold real estate in a 500 point battle. Abjorn Hofkeg 5 Miners Musician Earth Elemental Abjorn Hofkeg's Evil Twin, Ralph 4 Miners Musician Earth Elemental's Handsome Twin, Jim Bob Luck Stone Totals: 500 Points, 13 Models, 4 Troops, 4 Init Cards, 0 Spies Unless your opponent decided to field some uber-mage in a 500 point game, you'll be able to do what you want at will thanks to being burrowed 100% of the time. Then, when you feel it is time, pop up and whoop some a$$. Wild Bill
DanyBoy
Thanks guys. I just ordered two elementals and a few miners to add to my dwarven army, maybe they will get here on time and maybe I’ll have time to paint them… I was a little surprised to see four troops in a 500 point army, I usually use bigger troops. My 1000 point armies usually have 3 to 5 troops including solos. I understand that you get more initiative cards and a greater flexibility with several smaller troops, but I always felt more comfortable with larger troops. It is something I will have to field test… I have to be honest an all-burrowing army makes me smile… Well back to painting… and ale drinking (after all being a dwarf is in the blood). Stubbdog
In this particular case, it really isnt even about initiative cards (although they help too). Its about trying to get the models that you want into the list. In this case the elementals just play really tough in small sided games. Not that they dont in larger games, its just more pronounced in smaller games. We could just as easily build a list around a single power troop idea as well. Dwarves - 498 points Troop 1 Ursula, Bear Rider - Mithril Armor, Book of Tactics Gilam, Rune Spelunker Bear Rider x 5 ---------------------------- 1 troop +1 Tactician 7 models (22 DTs) Gilam burrows and then pops up every now and then to cast fireballs, mire, and fiery hammer. Or you can swap him out for Margara and add some more firepower to the spells at the risk of her inability to burrow and hide.
psyberwolfe1
You see I'm think tons of dwarf piercers with some dudes to bat cleanup. Hitting at or better than %50. Few lists are shot heavy, so there will be some impunity. Same range as spell casters so the casters will be pressed if they engage. Pierce. Just thinking about it seems that they might make a pretty decent list.
Stubbdog
Piercers are awesome for sure if your enemy brings a bunch of low DV support type models. Thats what piecers are great at taking out, the spear guys, the sidekicks, the casters, etc.. but for main line fighters and leaders with higher DVs and deflect, it is much more difficult. Not saying they cant do it, just saying that they usually have to "gang shot" them to get it done which means that you will still have a bunch of models getting across to you. jdripley
How about this for a little 500 point army? Dwarves - 500 points using Warriors of the Mountain Doctrine Troop 1 Logrim Battlefury Ivar Silverfist Durgam Deepmug Warrior x 2 Piercer x 4 Troop 2 Earth Elemental The front line is a little short, but I think the Earth Elemental makes up for that with his DR/2. Some may scoff at including Ivar in such a small list, but I contend that he really makes this list. He will really make an enemy pay for failing to take down the earth elemental in one go. You've got enough Piercers in the list to give any enemy serious headaches on the way in, the warriors can draw off defensive strikes meant for Logrim or Durgam (and having those two alive and well late in the game will be really good).. And you've got 4 models that are benefiting from Staunch Defender for extra defensive strikes. Just all around Dwarven goodness.
frogimus
Hi folks. Just thought I'd pop in and say "hello" Got my rulebook on it's way and can't wait to get into the game. Was trying to decide a faction, then realized that I had already collected a few Warlord Dwarves. I have Thorgram, Ivar, and Fulumbar and likely a few more somewhere in my mountain of lead. So when I've read through the book, I'll probably be back in here pestering you folks to get the rest of my starting lineup mapped out. ~frogi~
