Reven

Recommended Posts

Hi folks,

Keeping in mind that I don't own a rulebook or ever played a game of Warlord, is it possible to build a Reven army using only Bones minis? If so, what would it look like?

Thanks in advance!

Not at this point, no. However, include the LEs (which are the same stuff, just painted), and you could make a pretty decent force. You can proxy, but the biggest thing holding you back will be leaders. However, using the bugbear and orge chieftain as Gronk and Kagunk, respectively, that solves that issue. You can now use the Orcs from the LE line as Bull Orcs (archers, fighters, and hunters), or use them as regular orcs for more soldiers. You can also use the goblin LEs to bulk up too. A 1K list could look something like:

Reven - 999 points

Troop 1

Gronk Spliteye, Bugbear (proxy 20026)

Bloodmane, Gnoll Champion (proxy 77012)

Bull Orc Fighter x 5

Bull Orc Hunter x 3

Troop 2

Gronk Spliteye, Bugbear (proxy 20026)

Ogre Warrior x 8 (proxy 77005)

Troop 3

Goblin Skeeter x 3 (the goblin archers from 20024)

Troop 4

Goblin Warrior x 6 (the two goblin models with shields from 20024)

Maybe not the best list, but made with all Bones and/or LEs. In time, I suspect this will be easier to achieve (both with just Bones minis, and better lists due to wider model selection).

I've been gearing up to demo Warlord for my gaming group. I'm making several 500 point armies with no warlords for the demo. I've love orcs and goblins ever since playing the first Warcraft. Here's my attempt at a 500 point Orcish Horde:

Troop 1
Dantral, Half-Orc
Goblin Warrior x 7
Luck Stone

Troop 2
Gakalath, Orc
Orc Warrior x 7
Orc Spearman x 6

Troop 3
Ogg, Goblin Beastrider
Goblin Beastrider x 4

I completely ignormed ranged or magic in order to overwhelm opponents with swarms of greenskins. This army has 27 models, more then twice that of my other 500 point armies. Not sure if that'll work out, but I want the satisfaction of throwing down a troop of 14 models with cavalry support. Woo!

Another thing I'm not sure of is who should lead troops 1 and 2. I have Dantral the captain leading the goblins, because he can inspire them if necessary. But he'd be safer in the double line of orc warriors and spearmen, and thus more likely to influence the battle. Mayeb that troop of just goblins should become a band of 4 goblin skeeters?

For the points, the beast riders are some of my favorite models in the game. They always earn their keep for me. As for your list, overall I think your list is just fine. That is one of the fun parts of this game... simply playing with lists.

A suggestion of maybe swapping out a couple of one orc warrior and one orc spear for one Gonda caster (30 points for 30 points), then basically swapping the troops of troop 1 and troop 2 so that when Gonda casts bless, it affects more models. Dantral is the only leader in your list that can include elites currently.

Plus the core bonus has 4 bugbears and 4 gnolls, people say these arent Warlord figures but they match the existing Warlord bugbears and gnolls they just have different weapons in their hand. So they look like they belong if you want to proxy them as soldiers.

Reaper Games army creator lists bugbear warriors, hill giant, woodcutter beast man, traeg, gronk spliteye, bloodmane in the Revan faction. That is 10 figures, one of which is a 198pt giant. Seems like a pretty awesome army to me.

Am I doing something incorrect?

Nope, the proxy rules are pretty clear that you can use any reaper model for any other one.

Also, there are plenty fo goblins and regular orcs in bones, and the black orcs from kargir would make good bull orc proxies.

I looked into using Gonda and how that might affect things. I'm going with this list for my demo:

Troop 1
Dantral, Half-Orc
Gonda, Goblin
Orc Warrior x 6
Orc Spearman x 5
Luck Stone

Troop 2
Ogg, Goblin Beastrider
Goblin Beastrider x 4

Troop 3
Goblin Skeeter x 4

Still 21 models, 7 more than the next largest army. Also has some ranged capability from Goblin Skeeters. I liek having them in a band so they add an initiative card, but Dantral can led them because they're mob units. Is it generally better to split up models or cram them into larger troops so they can all activate at once?

Once we go to 1000 points, I'm going to look at the Orc caster in the Warlord TV demo game, with the 5 mana Dominance spell. And a Hunting Beast. And Bull Orcs!

I play this list yesterday:

Reven - 998 points

Troop 1

Varaug the Great Bull Orc (Bonesplitter)

Korgug, Bugbear Bully x 2

Bull Orc Hunter x 2

Bull Orc Berserker x 2

Bull Orc Archer x 2

Troop 2

Kagunk, Ogre (Magic Weapon)

Bull Orc Hunter x 2

Bull Orc Berserker x 2

Bull Orc Archer x 2

Korgug, Bugbear Bully x 2

Troop 3

Urga, Beastman

Beastman Woodcutter x 4

Goblin Skeeter x 2

Gonda, Goblin

Luck Stone

Tomukh Doctrine

Really enjoy the combination of Enrage and Frenzy, and the synergy & support between Bugbear Bully, Bull Orc Hunter and Bull Orc Berserker. I know I've got to try those Ogre warrior with bestman wood cutter as cheap fodder. Love having two strong leader with mighty and one with reach.

You can ask DanyBoy how he likes the reroll of the tough check... I've roll 16 of them yesterday...lol

So I have a question to some of you veterans... me and my girlfriend play miniatures games very casually... so we don't mind mixing up lists to represent the models we want/have. I already have a collection of Orcs and Beastmen from Warhammer. I'm looking for stats to represent boar riders. Are there any models similar in any other forces that have the stats and points that would represent boar riders (with orcs)? Closest thing I can seem to find is maybe the Dwarf Bearriders

Have you considered:

Durthen, Boarmaster
Affiliation: Dwarves/Good Cost: 76 Rank: Elite Base: Lrg Race: Dwarf 14451
DT 0 1 2 MOV 9 9 9 DIS 7 7 6 DV 10 10 9 MD 12 12 11
S.A.: Fearless, Mounted, Tough/2
MAV 5 6 7 #MA 3
S.A.: Bloodlust, Demoralize, Frenzy, Shock

It's not an orc, but everything else fits. Just sayin'.

Yea, but isn't he a unique? I was already thinking of using his stats for a character, but I'm looking for something that can be used as standard troops.

How about a Brood of Pryak Payank:

Brood of Payanak

Affiliation: Reptus/Neutral Cost: 73 Rank: Soldier Base: Lrg Race: Dragon 14505

DT 0 1 2 MOV 8 8 8 DIS 7 6 5 DV 12 12 10 MD 13 12 12
S.A.: Deflect/1, Mounted, Tough/2

MAV 6 5 4 #MA 3

S.A.: First Strike, Rush Attack

Just rename it as needed. Change race to "Orc-on-Pork", affiliation to Orcs/Goblins, Fudge on the base size somehow (those GW orc/boar models are on cavalry bases, IIRC?)

***Edited to add Missing SA.

Glad you brought this model up. These are the stats that I'm using for comparison. My girlfriend has a collection of Lizardmen so her primary force will be using Reptus rules (her second force are Dwarves). So ideally I'd like to find stats that aren't as good as these and lower point cost. Wish I was more familiar with the game so I can properly adjust point cost by creating my own unit. I'd love to do something along the lines of the Dwarven Boarmaster with lesser stats to represent normal troops. Just can't figure out the points for it. Thanks so far for the help guys. Really looking forward to getting started with this system. Since abandoning Games Workshop's rules, I've visited many other great rules sets for skirmish level games. The Warlord set of rules are some of the best balance in terms of granularity, details, and ease of play.

You could use it as a proxy for goblin wolfriders? Not as powerful perhaps, but you have the right faction to begin with.

Very true, but I also have Goblin riders that I'll be using, so definitely need a distinction between the two.
