Shakandara
Seems a shame to only be getting one Spy out of Matisse's WA, especially since your list is primed to be an Onyx Legion Doctrine, where those Spys will either be doubled or can be used to drop a card to the bottom of the pile. In the case of the first list, I'd probably sack a Phalanx and one Spear to grab another cheap elite. With the 2nd and 3rd lists, it is a little harder, as you start to get thin on soliders with the addition of the big solo. In that case, I'd scrap one of the leaders (most likely Lorenth), shuffle the rest of the soliders into Troop 1, pick up an eilte for Matisse's troop, and move the Book of Tactics to one of the elites. You'd lose one Troop, but you'd still have 3 Tacticians and 3 (doubled) Spys. You'd also only deploy 2 Troops if using the Incarnation, so you'd be in an excellent position to make your opponent move 1st in Turn 1, then have 6 Cards in the deck plus at least 1 (doubled) Spy left to try to go early in Turn 2. In the latter case, the list would look something like: Overlords - 987 points Troop 1 General Matisse Balthon, Priest of Khardullis w/Book of Tactics Moraia, Warbride Onyx Zephyr x 3 Overlord Warrior x 4 Overlord Spearman x 2 Troop 2 Merack of the Onyx Phalanx Onyx Phalanx x 3 Overlord Crossbowman x 3 Troop 3 Incarnation of Flame There's still 13 points left; I'd probably stick a couple of bond slaves in Merack's troop to help with Support bonuses and add a Luck Stone. ~v

jdripley
I call this list the "Red Carpet" because of all the notables gathered into one spot. I thought it would be fun to cram as many elites into a single list as I could! Overlords - 1000 points Troop 1 Ashkrypt, Lichlord of Craclaw Arik Gix, Inquisitor Balthon, Priest of Khardullis Strach, Warmage Overlord Spearman x 4 Troop 2 Vincente, Chevalier Onyx Chevalier x 2 Troop 3 Taletia, Disciple of Ashkrypt Ymrilix the False Overlord Spearman x 4 The idea is to spread the Spearmen out front in a pattern that will force the enemy to use up extra actions bypassing them, or using up actions smashing through them. Ashkrypt, Arik, Balthon, Strack and Taletia all blast the enemy to gribbly bits, and Vincente and his Chevaliers flank wide to try to take a little heat off of the main body. I would probably use the Onyx Legion doctrine with this... it boosts Vincente's troop quite a bit, and makes the whole army more resistant to magic. What do you think, is 5 casters a bit overkill? Shakandara
An army with serious ranged firepower would probably be a pita, since they would have a fairly easy time chewing up the spears, but it seems like the magical firepower and the cavalry should help counter it. Interesting build; let us know how it works out when you play it. ~v
WizardOne
Overlords - 998 points Troop 1 Bile, Wyvern Troop 2 Shadow Legionnaire x 3 Vincente, Chevalier Armor of Courage Troop 3 Onyx Golem Spiked Armor Troop 4 Overlord Warrior x 10 Strach, Warmage Hooves of the Nightmare Familiar Standard Troop 5 Mageguard Golem Spiked Armor Troop 6 Corvus Magic Weapon Bondslave Survivor x 3 I came up with this by a) tinkering with Army Creator while... b) Sorting the figure collection a bit. Not sure if I have met all the legalities even. I have three characters and three solos/monsters, I think I have that right. No shooting, one magic slinger, one flying heavy hitter, one rider, a bunch of melee types. Does the Mageguard Golem have to be a Solo? (...despite his name.) Does he go in the troop with the mage he is guarding? is it just a cool name?

Also, your troop 4 doesn't have a leader and Corvus has a minimum of 4 grunts and you only have 3. Still, you have the foundation for a nice army. Your hooves of the nightmare should go to troop 1 since they only affect mounted troops. Don't get discouraged. Army building can take a couple attempts until you get all the if/thens figured out. If your just trying to use what minis you have and want to get in a fun game just to learn the mechanics the list would work fine. The details can come later when you add more leaders. Shakandara
Also, the Golems are both Constructs, and therefore cannot use equipment. ~v
spiritual_exorcist
Pondering the use of a huge number of decent Solos in an army, I guess the only problem I would have using it is that it would get boring I think. Might be fun to try once or twice, especially if the my opponent fielded alot of Solos as well; would make for a pretty fun slugfest if there were 8+ Solos on the board. So what I was thinking was cramming 5 Onyx Golems into a 1000 point build, worth doing?
vejlin
I think so. Using corvus and slaves to get a high enough troop count to bring the golems, you've got an interesting army. I've had good luck with armies based around canon fodder and heavy hitters like this list would be. I find that the key is restraint. Charge your slaves into the enemy forces, one slave per enemy, and DO NOT ATTACK. This way the majority of the enemy force is wasting activations killing a 5 point model each, while your golems are chewing through his most valuable models. With any luck once he's killed the bond slaves you will have killed the most serious threats to your golems and he'll have trouble overcoming the damage reduction. vejlin
Troop 1: Andras + 4 bondslaves Troops 2-7: Corvus + 4 bondslaves Troop 8: Mageguard Golem Troops 9-14: Onyx Golem 6 Onyx Golems and 14 Initiative cards. Depending on the scenario you could do some serious damage with this.
spiritual_exorcist
I would likely hesitate to leave home without a little magical and ranged support, so I was thinking something like the following: Overlords - 1000 points Troop 1 Marquise Zora d'Arengo Bondslave x 13 Troop 2 Taletia, Disciple of Ashkrypt Overlord Crossbowman x 4 Troop 3-5 Corvus Bondslave x 4 Troop 6-10 Onyx Golem x

spiritual_exorcist
Ooo yuck . I find when use just one Onyx Golem , he can be quite brutle but 5 !!!! Bah, you're lucky I don't have 5 to throw up against you, or an overlord army either. Broke down and went with a Dwarf army for my newest aquisitions, so you are safe from the 5 Golems for a while :)
shakhak
I keep seeing a lot of armies that try to take mass solos with DR/2. Has anyone seen how they play on the field? I'm just anxious to see a battle report.
spiritual_exorcist
Most DR models have very few damage tracks (1-3) unless they are unique, so this balances things out. TO be honest the reason I like the Golem is that it has Mighty, the DR/2 is quickly balanced by the models low DV and the small number of damage tracks. The Golem looks reasonably soft (granted I'm not an Overlord player) assuming you throw a reasonable number of models at it (which is the key with any Large Solo model really, unlike previous editions it takes allocation of reasonable resources to throw them down). In the case of the Golem any large troop with a Decent Leader should have few problems, but you can expect to lose a few models in the process. Truthfully Xailor is possibly the better model for just about the same points in my mind. DR is often well balanced by other factors I'd be equally freaked out to see 3+ of him on the field. In fact with an overlord army you could probably get the best result if you mixed Golems, Xailors, and an Incarnation.
