jenova
Any suggestions for hair color? The hat will probably be dark, but I'd be willing to make it another color if it clashes with the hair.
ixminis
Med/Dark Brown is my first inclination... neutral and will allow you to do what you want with everything else
Bumble_B
I actually kinda dig it the way it is. Black with grey/white highlights in her hair. Makes it look like she has tried to dye her hair in a few places or has added little trinkets of other trophies hairs. You could easily work on the placement of the highlights and make it stand out. Just my 2 cents. But don't take my word for it, I know nothing of color theory.
Jabberwocky
Sweet work on the NMM on the sword! My vote would be a medium/light brown. It will help provide contrast between the dark hat and the darker red you have going on for the coat.
Lyn
WOW! I love the paint job on her! I have that mini also, but haven't painted her yet. As for her hair, I like the black hair also, but if you wanted to change it, I agree with the guys about going with a med. brown because it would be neutral. Lance
Her skin tones scream red head, but with the red coat I'd say stay black :0 nice work
jenova
Thanks for the advice :) I think I'll start out with brown and see how that works out.
captenglish
First off, which figure is that(sorry new to Reaper ), and I'm on a new mission to collect as many Reaper pirates as I can. Secondly, great pant job so far. I'm currently working on the 54mm version of Maria Roseblade and plan to go with either blonde or red hair, but think your figure would look better wth dark haiir as you have her. Beowulfthehunter
Could you go the anime route and make it purple?
MamaGeek
Could you upload the photo to the Reaper boards? I can't see it.
jenova
Hope that worked :) I'd love to try purple on a different figure. I believe I've got a couple of anime style minis somewhere. I believe her name is Melisande Wavecutter. Lots of fun to paint. I'd recommend picking her up if you're collecting pirates!
MamaGeek
Thanks for the upload. I can see her now. My first thought is to consult the color wheel. I see a lot of red and green, and some bluish tints in the blade. That's a good balance. A bit more blue would probably be a good idea, so you might want to consider that for the feather. Hair color is usually neutral - brown, blond, black - nothing to help with color balance. So, you have to think about light, then. She is overall a pretty dark figure. Your colors are high saturation, which I like, but the brightness is low, meaning they are dark variants (maroon, as opposed to bright red). The dark lining and cuffs of her coat further emphasize the darkness of the piece. Here's what I would do: give her a tan, and make her blonde. The light hair will stand out against the dark hat and coat, and tanned skin is more realistic for a pirate. It would also fit the overall composition a bit better, I think. Since you're not finished, I'm guessing you're goint to do this anyway, but the skin also needs shading and highlighting. Good luck!
jenova
Thanks for the feedback. There is actually shading and highlights on the skin as well as some additional shading under the hat and some blush, but I take WIP pictures with flash so the skintones tend to look washed out. Interesting about the color wheel. I know there are different types. On the ones I have, red and green are opposite. What are the differences between the different types of wheels? I've been playing around with a style that is a little more European than my usual bright work. I'm actually quite enjoying doing darker minis with almost black shading and only a few bright details. I think it's very much a matter of taste. I might even start using metallics too
MamaGeek
Oh yes, I think your dark style is very nice. It's not my own style, but it definitely works! Painters generally use a color wheel with red/blue/yellow (RYB) as equally-spaced primaries, because these represent the way in which paint colors are mixed to produce all other colors. Scientists and graphic artists often use red/green/blue (RGB), as these are the light additive primaries that are combined by wavelength values to produce different colors on a computer screen. (That is why pixel colors are represented by an RGB value). You can read more about color theory here or here.
Ironhammer
I'd have to say, I think she'd look best with dark hair. I really like your paintjob by the way. She looks almost porcelain.
