I have been out of work since March 6, and only just found a job again last week, for a place where I worked four years ago. I was laid off twice in 13 months - not totally unexpected when you work in civil engineering/home building. The first time, I was able to transition into another position with our corporate office, but that lasted only another year before another round of layoffs came along. Unfortunately, many of my friends from the engineering firm are still unemployed six months (or more) later. I'm going back into medical education, which, hopefully, is somewhat more recession-proof....

Working... but you might call it part-time. It seems part-time work is becoming the standard around here these days. I mean, how better to keep labor costs down then by staffing the whole place with part-timers that get no real job benefits..not even a paid vacation.

And yeah..it sucks, but it's a job. I have one friend who just got laid off his seasonal position, another friend who was given the "relocate or get laid off" choice, and didn't want to move..and I'm seriously worried my two sisters who both work for different public libraries will be looking for work as their local municipalities cut budgets. (It's happening all over the country, and libraries are getting hit hard in the crunch)

Don't worry Nanite! I may be joining you soon....

Damon.

Take care man, hows the job market in your area?

Here's mine: http://www.google.com/publicdata?ds=usunem...0&tdim=true

I may not get unemployment benefits...

And yeah..it sucks, but it's a job.

As long as it's close to home, that's exactly the kind of job I'm looking for!

Bwahahahaha! Oh man that's rich (wipes a tear).

I guess I could work at The Sands (built on the shattered bones of Bethlehem Steel), but I might get depressed. They DID keep the crane, and Emeril has a restauraunt there...

Seriously, I'm waiting for the new Museum of Industry opens up here. I'll apply to that in a hot second...

For what its worth...

One surprise for me in terms of finding job opportunities (*knocks on wood* not looking ATM) has been Twitter. I am connected to a number of people in my field, and I also found my local chamber of commerce there, and I've seen several dozen opportunities in the last few months. I don't think its going to net you instant success, but if you can build a good network that could help.

Good luck all.

While it has been a few years since I have been unemployed, I remember it well. Just be open to job possibilities - I ended up having to move out of state, but I am very happy where I am at now.

Also, http://www.usajobs.com/ is a great place to look for Federal jobs - several thousand across the US open right now. Even in the current economy, the federal government is still hiring. Sometimes hard to match your skills with an open job that is local, though.

Good luck everyone!

A follow-up from my previous message: got the axe today. While getting canned is never a pleasant thing, it's bittersweet because I hated that job. A lot.

Damon.

Felt that way after over 2 years at GM. Hated it after 2 weeks - the office politics. Couldn't deal with them, and after 2 years they let me go from their R&D center. Hated being out of a job, but at the same time, felt freed from some sort of purgatory.

Then, I had to move to Ohio, and I wouldn't wish that on most of my enemies, even........

I was gainfully employed for over 9 years in various jobs that I had the ability to quit from since having a new job lined up.

Then came last year. I was accused of doing something I didn't do and was summarily fired. Thus began the job hunt. I was unemployed from June-November 2008. I then landed an ok job driving a box truck and delivering tires and auto parts for a local wholesaler. I was laid off back in May of this year, and still haven't found a job. I have been on 2 interviews. One unfortunately wanted me to spend $700 out of pocket to become an insurance salesman. Not that there is anything wrong with that, but not only did they tell me that is was a call center position (which it wasn't!) but I'm not exactly the salesman type.

Out of my D&D group I am the only one unemployed (thanks God for that!) but in my band both myself (drums) and the bass player are out of work. The Lead guitarist is self employed and looking for contracts (he's a architectural consultant) the other 2 are in IT and electrical engineering.

Good luck out there to all of you that are unemployed. This economy sucks.

Times like this I thank God i'm in education and wife is in healthcare, bad or good economy kids need taught and people keep getting sick, makes for careers that dont get interupted very often by bad times. My prayers and best wishes go out to all of you struggling to find work. Lets hope this damn mess is starting to end, as the "experts" claim they expect the GDP to increase in the next quarter.
