I hate Kroot

Recommended Posts

I'm trying to think up of a color scheme for some Kroot and I keep hitting the proverbial wall. I see too many greens, bright colors don't seem to suite them to me for whatever reason. I want to do something with earth tones without relaying on browns too much. If I could find a cool looking green I'd give it a go, but for whatever reason nothing I think of seems to fit right.

I don't know anything at all about the codex and fluff associated with GW or 40k, but if you are not concerned with that stuff I have a couple random thoughts...

Juxtaposing warm and cool tones can help define details in general.

Lately I've really been lovin' RMS Shadow Green. It's neither too warm nor too cool. It has a really soft, natural feel if you know what I mean. I wish I hadn't waited till it was disco'ed to try it. I could see a nice combo of that, HLed up with a neutral to warmish yellow or yellowish ivory, and using a nice neutral burgundy as a complement shaded down with a cool muted purple. Maybe Burgundy Wine mixed with an extra splash of red? You can also bring in ivorys, like Creamy Ivory/Stained Ivory/Driftwood or maybe the Bone Shadow triad for additional "earth tones" The first combo being warmer and the second being cooler. Mix things up a little by using cool, blue-ish metals (or NMM if you wish) and really push your HLs overall, particularly in the greens and the metals.

If you don't go too warm on the burgundy it shouldn't overpower the green, and could still harmonize with warm toned browns like Harvest Brown. Maybe consider using the same yellow to bring up your HLs in the burgundy that you use in the greens to help tie it all together. One last thought: Try using Blue liner for lining throughout the whole piece. It will contrast better than brown liner with all the warm tones and thus help define the different areas.

I dunno.... Sometimes I chatter too much. Just throwing ideas out there!

You could try a nice rusty red for the main bodies, a pale Dun for their bellies and an olive green for the hair/quills/spine thingies. That could give you a nice earthy palate with complimentary colors to boot.

I don't care for overly bright colors myself. My own Kroot are painted kind of a dull green basecoat (similar to Reaper Pale Olive), with bone colored quills. That is contrasted with lots of browns and tans for the straps and accessories, along with a few metalics.
