Figured I'd put this here, since it's as good a place as any.   Having enjoyed Warmaster for quite a while, it's sad to see this.

FANATIC STUDIO NEWSLETTER

By Jervis Johnson

This is one of the hardest things I have ever had to write. At the end of last week Steve Hambrook passed away. Steve has been my friend and colleague for more than five years. When I joined the Fanatic team Steve was already a hardened veteran, having served three years in the trenches as editor of the Citadel Journal from issue 21-42. He went on to become the editor of Town Cryer, Necromunda Magazine, and Warmaster Magazine. The Fanatic design studio will simply not be the same place without him.  We already miss him and his easy, self-deprecating humour more than words can say.

We know that Steve's loss will be felt just as deeply by many of you too. In order to allow everyone to pay their respects to Steve we have set up a book of condolence on our website. Please take the time to write a few words if you possibly can. I know that it would mean a huge amount to Steve's family to know just how much he will be missed by us all.

I would love to give Warlord a try.  None around here knows it.  I have the beta rules but am still fairly new to mini games so the mechanics are forien to me.  I have read through them several times still coming up with blanks.  I was going to give it a go at Reapercon.  Though now that may or may not be a possibility.

I have several of the Warlord minis primed.  I've been watching and reading the posts.  I would ask questions but I wouldn't really know how to start.  I will paly Warlord,  no doubt about it.  right now though, I seem to be the only on interested around my parts.

Mordheim arrived today (very prompt service). So far I have skimmed through the rule book and assembled 4 of the human minis. I stopped assembling them after reading that the equipment on the mini had to match what you buy, until I get a better grasp of warband construction. The history of the city is very well done and would make a very good background for a D&D campaign. I have also been thinking of various Reaper minis I could use for the game and have a list started in my head. Well thats enough of a rant for me. If anyone has suggestions on setting up warbands (both human and skaven) I would be glad to hear them.

Well, one piece of advice I have is don't spend on getting armor right away. It doesn't help that much(in my experience ,anyway). You're better off buying weapons or more henchmen.

Spears are a good weapon for a youngblood, beacause it allows them to strike first , before their attacker.

Swords are good because you can parry an attack.

As far as hired swords are concerned, the best one for your money is the Tilean Marksman. You can find his rules in the Best of Town Cryer Vol. 1. He is relatively cheap, and his crossbow skills are worth every penny.

I've never played Skaven, so I don't have any tips on that warband.

These are just some things that I thought of off the top of my head. You'll find out what works best for you as you play.

If you have any questions, or want to see some my group's warband conversions, just let me know.

Now, go get that wyrdstone!

Thanks for the tips lionmane. I would really like to see your group's warband conversions. I have finished assembling the humans that came with the game. I am leaning towards playing them as Reiklanders. Next I have to finish putting together a skaven band. I think to start out I will play for a while with the minis that came with the box set before investing a real specific warband. Once I get a good grasp of the rules I will work on a more permenant warband and possibly pick up some of the hired swords and Dramatis Personae.

Decado,

As soon as I have my warband conversion stats in a legible form I'll have 'em up. Also, my friend made a Gorilla Warband( using 100 Kingdoms Simians)that's pretty cool. I'll get those together as well.

Reiklanders are a good choice for starting out. They're pretty well-balanced.

Have fun in Mordheim, and I'll talk to ya later!

I look forward to seeing your warband conversions lionmane. I have not played a game of Mordheim yet, still learning the rules, but I have already started creating a Beastmen warband. So much for just sticking to the minis provided. :) Today me and my friend played Warhammer Quest for a few hours. Its a fun game if you wanna dungeon crawl. Its pretty tough though, we played two warriors each and in the 4-5 games we played only the Elf and the Barbarian lived to reach Battle Level 2. Fun Fun!!

This is a convenience thing... if you just want to play a game, not a campaign... you don't want to worry too much about this.  It makes sense to try to keep it close to what the figure looks like, but don't worry about details.

Examples (common sense):  Don't try to use your heavily armored knight figure as a wizard or archer.

If it has a bow it is an archer not a knight

The grey zones are usually minor equipment (pistols, extra weapon etc.) as well as the boundry armors... i.e. a figure with a metal hat (GW Bretonian archers) could be no, light or medium armor... while someone with scaly hide could be light, medium or heavy.

And the most important if the figs look the same they are the same... keeps confusion down.

These are basically house rules on using figs in any game we play.  We do the it is what it looks like as far as we can... but most of the people I game with (me being the notable exception) can all field multiple armies each...

I hope that helps.

And as a side note, Mordheim over warhammer any day of the week and twice on Sundays... but I haven't tried Warlord... and if it plays as fast as an hour with 80 figs a side that's good, very good as long as the balance is there (again, I haven't played and I haven't looked at it).

It's been over a month since the gaming group I am in had their last session.  Between celebrating Jewish Holidays (Half our gaming group is Jewish), and our DM having a truly sucky work schedule, it has been hard to get everyone together to do some good D&D.  I'm hoping this Sunday is a go for gaming.

Yeah, it bites to have a  long gaming dry spell. Makes you appreciate it when you get back into playing. Hang in there!

Decado, how's the gaming goin'? I'm still getting my warband lists together for  you to look at. I haven't forgotten!

Thanks for the advice Walkerinthemist it did clear things up for me.

Lionmane, I have yet to play Mordheim but I have hooked one of my fellow gamers into painting and he is up for trying the game so it is only a matter of time. I also talked to the manager of my FLGS and he said that some people were starting a Mordheim campaign so I might be able to get in on that. Niceman got me inspired with his awesome dioramas to build one of my own so painting my warband has been put on hold temporarily. I am looking forward to your warband right ups!!

I am DMing a solo game for one of my players on Thursday. I am really looking forward to the game as he is playing an evil character. I am using a city I created in Greyhawk for my group game and with him playing an evil character it is helping me flesh out more of the city from a differnt perspective, which is really fun for me.

i'm going on a YEAR without gaming IRL. It's going to be another month 'cuz things are tight right now...not crazy busy, but busy enough that it's hard to match schedules w/ anyone else. By the time I do get an IRL game in, it will have been almost exactly one year...maybe a touch longer.

Fortunately, i've had Darakan; although at times this year i've been too busy for even that. I feel i've finally left that stage, and am going on to freeing up even more time in the near future.

Now if only i can find some time to do some decent painting between now & then...

Back when I was more active in my search for the perfect skirmish game, Mordheim was up there, yeah.  That was before the one game I rolled nothing but 6 and then the year I rolled nothing above 3, which meant I couldn't hit anything but never routed either.

Now I've been playing CAV twice a week for about five months.

If you're really into conversions, the one time I played Mordheim there was a guy who had a Sisters of Sigmar band where at least one of the figures had the hand cut off and drilled out so he could swap weapons.  This way you could have several variations on one mini.

They say the figure needs to match the description so you'll be forced to buy more minis anyway!

As for the dragon orge, D&D 3.5 has lots of templates.  Take the stock ogre, add the 1/2 dragon template and/or the demonic template and Bob's your uncle.

**EDIT**

Here's a link to the D&D website with all kinds o nastyness to throw at PCs:
