The Warlord 2 Army Builder

This isn't the same old army builder you may remember from WL1. It is new, improved, up-to-date and IMO the best thing to happen to WL since WL2 :D

Go to ReaperGames, and you'll see Army Builder in the lefthand menu. It takes a bit of getting used to how the parts work, but I worked it out soon enough so it is reasonably orcproof.

WHAT IT DOES

The Reapergames Army Builder is really meant to provide a handy printout of your army and other information you'll need during gameplay so you won't need to keep flipping through the book looking up spells, SAs or equipment.

WHAT IT DOESN'T DO

But bear in mind, this isn't an "army builder" in the sense of the AB program that adds up points and is supposed to prevent you from building illegal troops. You still need to stay aware of how many models your leaders can take, etc; and how many points you spend. Luckily the new WL2 rules make that much easier than before.

HOW TO USE IT

There's not a lot of instructions on how things work, so here's my layman's tutorial for you.

The first page just asks you to pick out your army. This step is pretty easy, but if you need help, the correct answer is "Reven"

You'll be taken to a big spreadsheet type page. The list on the left contains all the models sorted by Leaders, Elites, Soldiers and Solos, and includes Model/Troop upgrades at the bottom. To pick something from the list, you just click and highlight it.

In the middle of the page toward the left you'll see buttons that say "Add to Troop 1", "Add to Troop 2" and soforth. Once you've picked a model (or upgrade) from the list on the left, just use the add-button to put the model into the troop of your choice.

To the right of the add-buttons you'll see your Troops list under construction. Next to each model name, there will be a series of little buttons much like what you see in the online store here.

- (+) lets you add more of the same model, so if you want three Berserkers (and who wouldn't?) just click the (+) until the list shows you have 3

- (-) works like the (+), except backwards...but you probably figured that out already.

- (X) lets you take that model completely out of that Troop.

- The fourth button with the little magnifying glass lets you preview the model's data card and shows you a picture. This is helpful if you are building an army and don't have your rulebook handy. The data card displayed will not, however, reflect any upgrades you apply.

Then on the righthand side, you can preview each data card and model. This is even possible without having to add the model to any Troop. Just highlight it on the list on the lefthand side.

You can change up Troop construction, delete models and Troops, and preview models at any time. There's also a "Start over" link at the top of the add-buttons section if you want to completely scrap your list.

When you're finished, there are a few options for the printed output. You can choose to leave out the SA list, spell list, or equipment list if you want to save a little paper.

Click "Output Army" to see an onscreen preview of your list. You can print this page, and if you find you really like the list, you can save your page as an HTML document (Windows) by going to menubar, clicking FILE > SAVE PAGE AS, and then choosing to save it as filetype: Web Page, HTML Only. You might even want to start a whole folder full of army lists that you can open in your browser and print at any time. (Mac users might have a different process for this)

A HUGE advantage this program has over previous ones is that it has built-in page breaks so that you won't end up with half a data card on one sheet and the rest on another. Generally speaking, you'll get a 5 page printed document. To preview how your document will print, go to menubar and click FILE > PRINT PREVIEW. Then you can see which pages contain what information...at which point you may decide to save a little paper and print some pages on the backs of other pages or not print them at all. I'm pretty sure you can print pages one-at-a-time from the Print Preview window. I've never tried it before. If not, I'll edit this.

______________

HEY GUS! Is there a way to DL the Reapergames Army Builder program for working offline? I'm assuming it's a standard javascript/HTML file that would run in my browser. If so, that would be a GREAT download resource!

A couple other quick tips on this:

1. After you have added models / items into a troop, they are re-arrangeable within that troop. Just highlight and drag up or down in the troop. This is for example when you add an item at the end but was suppose to go to the guy at the top of the list. You dont have to redo the whole list just to have it make sense, just highlight and drag it up under the correct model.

2. But, again as Spike points out, this does not then readjust any stats or anything like that. So, if you buy a magic weapon, it does not change your data card at all. (yet....)

3. There will be more imporvements made to this, but from playtesting, we know how valuable even this rough tool has become, so we wanted to provide it as soon as we could even if its not finished yet.

4. Sorry Spike, this is tied to a back end database, so at least for now, the answer is no, it is not downloadable. That is not to say that it might not be at some point in the future though...

5. Oh, and the one BIG negative about this army builder? You will find it so much fun building lists that you will soon find yourself just keep adding and adding and adding... and you will come up with some very cool 3K and 4K lists that you will want to play.

The term "highlight" is wrong here. Simply click and drag on the model's name to move it around within a troop. ::):

The tool is awesome. Very nice work!

The sweetest thing: the skills and spells available to you are printed and explained on the finished list. That's especially cool for new players who now have a clear reference of the skills and stats of their (demo) army.
