Dog lovers...

We see lots of pro-cat posters, but are there a lot of dog people among us? I love dogs and am a firm believer there are no bad dogs just bad owners... like Michael "Should be in prison until he's fifty" Vick. I have been around dogs all my life, my mom and aunt were show Poodle people when I was really little. Then up through high school we had a few farm dogs and hounds. As an adult I've exhibited and bred AKC Staffordshire Bull Terriers and worked for a while as a trainer. My newest dog endeavor is making a dog website and writing a Dog Blog for it. The Blog is called "Blogging with the Dogfather." It's actually three blogs in one and hopefully I can get some of my dog connections to contribute content.

Hear, hear! I wish I could get my two neighbors to realize that - it's not that I can't stand their dogs, it's that I can't stand how irresponsible they are as dog owners. I wouldn't call myself a dog lover, but I don't hate, or even dislike them.

Sorry - didn't mean to threadjack...

Lakota has been my avatar for how many years? Kengar has a doggie too.

While I tend to agree that the owners bear the majority of the responsibility for bad dogs, I don't let all dogs off that easy. Lakota was abused by his first owner (I found out after I got him), but was always a good dog (we were neighbors). And some breeds (and I'm not talking Pit Bulls) are just more aggressive. Most dogs want to be good, but, like people, some are just jerks...

We have a pet therapy dog that is a rottwieler coming to my unit on the weekends. Some of the staff were freaking out. I had to argue with a few of them about rotties as a breed generally being oversized lovable 100+ lb lapdogs. It's only the ones that are mistreated or trained to be aggressive that we hear about in the news.

I'm definitely a dog lover. I would like to point out that not all breeders are dog lovers. What breeders have done to Dobermans and German Shepherds, as well as other breeds, should be a crime. Breeding to a specific look has ruined a number of breeds and I think these are two that have suffered the most.

I like my dogs big and I'm still getting over the loss of both my Pyrs last year. There will be more in the house in at some point though. A house isn't a home till there is a big dog completely blocking the hallway because that's where he decided to sleep.

I am a HUGE dog lover, I own 2 ATM a Siberian Husky age 6 (Sheena) and a white German Shepherd age 1.5 (Zeus) Dogs are products of breeding and environment, and while it is true some species are more aggressive this is not because nature has made them that way. Breeds like Pit Bulls, and Chows for example tend to be more aggressive because the trait has been bred into the breed at a higher frequency. For many years Dobermans were also considered an "aggressive" breed, but the recent trend of breeding more docile specimens has tamed the breed's behavior as well as reputation. Want to see a Pit Bull you just want to hug? Watch the Dog Whisperer, Cesar Milan's Pit Bull (Daddy) is one of the best behaved dog's you will ever see!

I would like to point out that not all breeders are dog lovers.

I've seen far too many dogs that are from "breeders" who are really just puppy mills. So, I cringe whenever I see puppies for sale by the side of the road or at a small independent pet store. ::P:

But, my view is a little skewed from volunteering at the Houston SPCA.::):

We adopted a 14 month old Golden from a Golden Retriever rescue group 5 days before GenCon. We're still adjusting to having him in the house. The similarities in personality and activity level between what our son (now 6 1/2) was like as a toddler and Rocky are striking. Well, except for the hair everywhere.

I'm moving to a new house soon, and two of my roommates have a beautiful doggie named Athena. She is part greyhound and part somthing else... (she is gold and white and has sort of floppy ears) and is totally cute! They rescued her from the local animal shelter and she's really a wonderful animal. She is very polite and well behaved with people and other animals, particularly cats, so I'm looking forward to it alot. I have two cats myself and all the animals get along really well with each other. I'm looking forward to some cute photo ops! ::):

I pretty much always had a dog growing up, but when I moved in with my wife, the 'family' dog (that I raised and trained) couldn't come with me. I often go home to my mom's just to visit her (the dog). Unfortunately, she's almost 14, and has started to lose weight and isn't eating anymore. When I saw her last weekend I was on the verge of tears because she had gotten so skinny. Energy was still good, for a 14yo pooch though and she tried to tackle me when she came in the door. She just had a small growth removed a couple months back, so we are worried she might have cancer and will need to be put down. I was hoping my daughter could wait a little longer for us to have a "death talk" because she just worships the ground Daisy (the Wonder Dog) loafs about on.

We're already working on my wife about getting a dog in the house when the kids are a little bigger, and we can fence in the back yard so the dog can run free instead of on a line. She never had a pet growing up so she doesn't really understand the need for a dog.

I love dogs. WE (the family) have 2 of them. Chase, my goofy black lab/mixed with caffeine, and Daisy, my daughters dog. She is a Shi-Poo. stuffzu Poodle mix. Both are great around kids and people. But not other animals for some reason. But that's ok. They're in the house or running in our big back yard!
