Gog Kluge
Hello all! I just recently picked up the second edition Warlord rulebook and I'm looking forward to getting into the game. I've decided to play Reven. What would be a good start? I'm pretty sure I want Varaug as my Warlord. Would the army pack of Bull Orc Fighters be a good first purchase? And what about Hill Giant's? They look pretty nasty on paper, but I don't have any in-game experience yet so I'm not quite sure. Thanks in advance!

Greenie
First off, welcome! I am new to the game and thinking of starting a Reven army as well. On paper they look awesome. Heres what I have been thinking for a good unit: 477pts but oh man, what a 477pts... Varaug Omber Skulltooth Gaaguck, Bull Orc Berzerker 3x Bull Orc Fighters 2x Bull Orc Berserkers All Bull Orcs, all have Bloodlust, so if you take some archers and soften the target up a little thats +1 MAV Use Omber to cast Frenzy on the whole troop and wow...6 MA from Varaug, 8 from Gaaguck, and 4 from your other guys.... Or, Use Incite to give the whole troop Rush Attack to get you across the board and still be able to attack. Now...throw in the unique item Bonesplitter. Put that bad boy on Varaug and he now has Mighty!!! Put it on Gaaguck and he has 4 attacks with cleave. The bad thing about frenzy is that it loweres your MAV by -1 for each +1 to the #MA. So, if you do put it on Gaaguck you dont want to frenzy often. But thats where incite comes into play. Welcome to the fold! EDIT: Oh, and I forgot the Warlord ability. When your Orcs start to die thats a Dis check for each based model. And the whole troop are Bull Orcs.
jdripley
How about this: Reven - 999 points Troop 1 Varaug the Great, Bull Orc ($9, or $8 if you use the alt sculpt) Yagun Oog, Ogre Mage ($12) Gaaguk, Bull Orc Berserker ($8) Bull Orc Fighter x 4 ($40 for 6) Bull Orc Archer x 2 ($40 for 6) Troop 2 Narg Bloodtusk, Bull Orc ($10) Bull Orc Fighter x 2 Bull Orc Archer x 4 Troop 3 Hill Giant ($5) That's $164, and it gives you three troops, 4 initiative cards, the Spy SA once, and sixteen models. That's a tad light on the model count, but since they're all Bull Orcs I don't think that's an issue. The archers are definitely for shooting, but if the enemy gets them in melee they'll hold their own better than most ranged models. I designed the army around army pack size - six per package for the fighters and the archers. Reven are a fun grab-bag of possibilities. They have an abundance of options available to them, and you can really do whatever you like with the army. They've got some decent defensive models, and a TON of options for swarming, for brutal offense, and so forth. They've even got a good corp of casters to enhance the troops or just blast the bad guys into gribbly bits. If I were you, I'd start with this generic formula for what often makes a good Warlord army: Aim for having 50-70% or so melee models, and with the balance of your points try to fit in a caster, maybe two, and some archers. In the end a 1,000 point army with 20 (or, roughly 5 models per 150 points) models is about right, too many below that and you'll face some issues with enemies being able to get at your archers and casters too easily. You can go way above 20 models, especially with Reven, and that's ok too. That's a GENERAL guideline and it's not the be-all of army building. Plenty of good armies defy those rules, but as a beginning player it's a fantastic place to start. Save the armies with huge numbers of casters for later when you've gotten a hang of things. Stubbdog
Ok, lets take a step back... First, let's say welcome to our corner of the internet, glad you found us. I see you are interested in Warlord, but have never played. Before we all just start throwing different army lists at you, as fun as it is to build them, lets find out where in this wide world you might be located so that we might be able to refer you to someone that can show you. Also, lets ask if you currently have any models from any other game that you can proxy for a bit while you learn the game and you decide for yourself what things you like or not. Ask about your game style. We know you are liking the Reven , but even within the Reven there are lots of styles to play with. We tried our best to give each faction several diferent ways to handle things so they wouldnt get boring. You prefer smash mouth, overwhelming hordes, giants smashing things, trampling rhinos, spell casting ogres, or even goblins riding on Cyclops? They definitely hae a mryiad of options to talk about. After that then we can start throwing all sorts of army options and model choices at you.

I just wanted to say welcome from another "Noob" and let me assure you, you are in good hands with this gang :) I've been having a blast trying to put together a nice Elven army and haven't even played yet! But I figure I will at least get to play at Reapercon -- if I don't find someone in my area before then -- and that gives me plenty of time to have grand delusions of being a mighty Elven Warlord...He..he. Shakandara
Hill Giant ($5) Uhhhh...**tap tap tap** Jim, are you there? He's $45. Yeah, looks like he missed the 4 there, but his total ($164) is correct counting the Hilly at the correct price. ~v Edited September 23, 2009 by Shakandara
Amalor Myrnnyx
Welcome to the game. I can't speak with regards to Reptus forces. I play Nefsokar. But, the way I learned was to put a couple different proxy forces together and play them through myself, just to get the feel of each faction and army. Fight well. jdripley
Ok, lets take a step back... Always the sensible one Stubbdog :P We just get so excited!! Yea, I missed the 4 on the hill giant cost... Let's chalk it up to the Hill Giant eating the 4?

Welcome to the game. jdripley's list is fairly solid for a starter, even if his prices are a bit off. Definitely take Yagun Oog. Might also look at Ombur. Varaug - a great first pick. Bull Orc fighers - solid all around units. Back them up with some hunters/lesser orc spearman and you're golden. Hill Giants - You have to learn to use them right. They are either a huge success or huge failure, without much middle ground. They tend to be huge arrow/spell magnets (which has it's advantages).
