Hedgehog
It was brought to my attention that people think all of Metro-Detroit(please note: around here Metro-Detroit are is all of the tri-county area) is the ghetto. So here is my question. What is the first city that you think of when you thing of "the ghetto" and why?
Dr.Bedlam
The south side of San Antonio, where generations of spraypainted gang tag gleefully adorns every flat surface you can find. Some of the shrubberies, too... and on weekends, people stick each other with knives for fun If they're serious, they simply unlimber their firearms and blaze away at each other. The soberer of the two generally wins.
haldir
Nyssa OR or the east side of Ontario OR Nyssa is very small town south of Ontario, but the income of the town isn't very high. Also the crime rate is pretty high as well. east side of Ontario is pretty much the rough side of Ontario. Pretty sure allot of illegal immigrants have made their homes on that side as well. eastside, just has the feeling, if you know what I mean. Karabean
Boston. My sister ended up with a bullet hole in her windsheild there. After that, Harlem.
Star Drifter
I grew up in Wyandotte, so I guess it depends. Once you get far enough north to where the snooty people are, or west to where it turns into farm country then I guess it isn't so bad. But it's also a place where the cops told my dad "it's not my job" to help when someone shot at our car. Overall, you have to agree. When the cops on I-75 are flying past the "Speed Limit 55" sign at 80 MPH along with everyone else so they can get out of danger ASAP, the place is a ghetto. vejlin
Warsaw, but that's probably because of the origin of the word (at least the modern use of it, I have no clue if it was in use prior to the Warsaw Ghetto)

wildbill
East St. Louis or Kansas City, KS. I had a bad experience in KCK once. Won't get into it here, but let's just say a big jacked 4x4 that I was driving saved my life.
Sanael
I'll second the southern San Antonio...and throw in certain parts of Houston, as well. And then there's East St. Louis, IL. Despite the dangerous reputations of some neighborhoods here in Pittsburgh, it's not really that bad. You'll get glared at in the Hill District or East Liberty, but if you want to get shot you're going to have to go to Homewood and actually provoke someone. Provocation is unnecessary in SA, Houston, and EStL; they'll do it there for free. edit: and Wildbill beat me to EStL. Ah, well. I guess I second that one, too. Inarah
The south side of SA doesn't scare me. Neither does Boston, having lived in both places. Most of the people there are simply poor and uneducated. I think the Missouri side of KC is worse than the KS side, and I drive through it occasionally because I only live a few miles away. This side of town has a bad reputation, but I think it is because a lot of folks feel uncomfortable in a mixed ethnic population that is not their own. When I think "ghetto" the places that come to mind are NYC, northern NJ, Washington DC, Chicago, LA, and yes, Detroit. Detroit tops the list of most violent US cities, and has for years. King Tiger
Worst areas I have experienced personally were some places in Philadelphia and Baltimore, although I rarely travel to urban areas because I dislike them so. I will say the last time I went to Baltimore about 3 or 4 years ago I was pleasantly surprised at the "Inner Harbor" area. That city can be proud of that renovation project. And yea Pittsburgh is really a tame city compared to most, and also has cleaned up quite a bit since most of the blighted steel factory areas have been torn down. KyleGibson
Oakland I was an inspector of affordable multi-family housing (read apartments) for about eight years and traveled around the country, including Detroit. Most places I went had good and bad points.
