MamaGeek
I painted this one just for fun. EDIT: After comments below, I made some touchups and retook the photos. New CMON Link This is the old attachment, before the touchups:

John Lee
I like it all except for her face around the eyes, it looks as if she has soot on her face, everything else is top notch. I really like the stripes. John
MamaGeek
I see what you mean about her face. I really don't think she's one of my best. I think I've reached a plateau in my painting, if not a real slump. Dark Sword minis have very small features, which doesn't help. I'll be doing a Klocke next, so maybe I'll do better, but I'd love to attend a con sometime, and learn from a pro. I'm pretty much completely internet and self-taught. Anne
I agree her facial features, particularly eyes could use more definition. Her outfit is really awesome though, particularly her jacket! I think just a touch more highlighting on her face and eyework and she will be fantastic! For getting out of the slump and excited to paint I recommend tapping into what inspires you and then looking with fresh eyes at minis. Sometimes a walk in a park or museum (doesn't have to be an art one, although it's very good to see paintings up close), or watching a visually rich movie or good book really helps. As I go about, I usually keep a small notebook and jot down color combinations that I see that I think would be interesting on a mini and then look at it when I am feeling a bit burnt out. Also sometimes I like to research the story behind the fantasy mini I am painting which can also generate good ideas. Hope it helps!
Darius Glenwell
If you want to up your painting take a look at the Miniature Mentor DVDs. They have really helped me a TON! Great for beginner and advanced painters.
John Lee
I started painting long before they had the internet and there really wasn't anyone here in lower Alabama that painted minis. I too have learned a lot on the 'net when it finally came a long, and hope to attend the con someday. As for the face, maybe I should have elaborated more. I really like what you've done with the mini, far better than I could do. I've never even tried to paint dark flesh. I think if you just lighten up the area around her eyes/cheeks she'll look even better. John
Mr.Wizard
The hair just says, 'Dread Alert!', and the skin is beautiful.
MamaGeek
Oh, I can definitely see now that the area around the eyes is too dark. It was lighter, but I had to touch up the eyebrows, eyes, and the hair on her cheek, which slopped over a bit onto her skin, so I had to go over it again, and the highlighting got lost. This is an earlier version of her, before the eyebrow/eye corrections. You can see that the placement of highlights on her face are more natural. If I'd looked at that after the corrections, I probably could have spotted the difference. She's not varnished yet, so I CAN go back and touch her up. I probably will. Dark Sword figures, as I've said before, are sculpted with accurate proportions, unlike most fantasy figures, which exaggerate the face, eyes, and hands. That makes Dark Sword minis a bit more challenging when it comes to painting those parts. Thanks for the compliments on the rest of the figure, though. I did especially like how the black leather boots turned out. For colors, after some less than satisfactory combinations turning up in some of my minis, I've started planning out the color schemes ahead of time, using a color wheel, and a hex color code generator to create a digital palette that I can refer to while I'm painting. It really helps.
MamaGeek
OK, I've touched her up and rephotographed the mini. See the top post above for the latest, and the CMON link to the new submission there. Thanks everyone!
Ferox
Very nice! The cuffs and collar really stand out to me.
