I've never noticed healing potions not stacking when I've bought them tho. Then again I'm not usually looking that closely.

 

I've seen that too, but they seem to usually update correctly after a short delay.

 

I'm excited--just unlocked Arcane Warrior with my mage. Just found my first spell combo as well--vulnerability hex+drain life.

Did you get Arcane Warrior while trying to get the Dalish to help you? That's where I learned mine, so I'm interested to know if you can learn it anywhere else too. Just to clarify, I learned it through a quest, not by buying a book from a vendor. I didn't even actually learn the skills, my main character just learned how to train a mage to become one. He's a fighter himself.

 

Speaking of which, anyone know where I can learn the Champion skills? I'm level 9 now and still haven't used the point I got at lvl 7 b/c the only Warrior class I've found is Templar and I don't want to learn that.

I just found that one last night myself. I'd never used Vulnerability before. :lol:

 

My key combo is Freeze + Critical Hit. Morrigan casts Cone of Cold to freeze 2+ bad guys and then each of my fighters uses Overwhelm (I think that's it) which triggers an automatic Crit. The monster shatters and dies no matter how many HP it had. Plus last night Morrigan unlocked Stone Fist, which does the same, so I can quickly kill 3 mobs right off the bat to help even a fight out a little bit. But its only guaranteed vs "white" baddies tho. Sometimes it works vs Yellows, but never against any of the Oranges I've faced.

I've run into:

Arcane Warrior from Dalish Ruins (one of the phylacters down there)

Duelist (some female NPC in the brothel in whatsitsname .. capital city you can't miss her)

Berserker (Got it from Ash Warriors in Ostagar(?) that place where you become grey warden, but it wasn't offered to my dwarf origin, only human, might have needed the social skill, believe it's available elsewhere too)

Shape Shifter (Morrigan in camp)

Blood Mage (Desire demon in redcliffe)

Finished my first play through. Very good game, the ending I felt was a little flat but I realized I had skipped some things. Didn't get any romances completed :(

 

I have to say, I really ended up enjoying the game more than i thought I would. It's solid even on the 360, but much more fun on the PC. As in a heck of a lot more fun. Almost a completely different play experience.

 

I really hadn't been messing with the character action section until the last fight, which is really fun btw. If you played final fantasy 12 then you should be familiar with the gambit system from that. DA:O uses this, but I don't feel it is as effective in DA:O. Still, get in there and play around some.

Yea, assuming you get the same situation as I do in redcliffe.. you'll see that what they throw at you is a bit insane.

OK I completed this quest last night, and all I can really say is that I didn't have any problems with it whatsoever. Yes it was insanely long, but I never had a party member go down and I rarely had to use any healing potions. I think the most damage anyone took was Leliana ran thru a burning barricade when I ordered her to shoot somebody, then ran back thru it again when I ordered her to return to her original position. Both were my fault, not the AI. :down: The only thing that I did have to use a lot of was mana potions. In fact I'm completely out now and I haven't seen any Lyrium since Ostragar. How the hell are you supposed to craft it if you can't find any?

 

There's 2 key things that make this fight a lot easier, so maybe if you missed one or both of them that's why you had problems. First, there's barrels of oil in the general store. After "looking" at them, there's a conversation option w/Ser whatsisname up by the mill that allows you to tell him about them. He'll agree that they can put them to use, and when you fight on top of the hill they light an entire barricade on fire. Every undead that comes down towards the mill has to run thru it and loses about 1/4-1/3 of their HP right there. Secondly, there's a house w/a locked door over by the general store. I think the Mayor will give you a sub-quest to go ask the guy for his help, but you don't even need to get that. I just figured a locked door had good loot behind it and kicked it in. Instead of loot tho I found a dwarf and his 2 thugs, whom I guess were the local gang or something. I've got Persuade 3 and that opened up a conversation path where I could use Intimidate on them. Told them they could risk dying protecting the village or I'd just kill them now. :lol:

 

When it came time to actually fight I started up by the mill. That part was extremely simple; all I did was put my party on one side of the burning barricade and then used longbows & crossbows to pull the undead. They'd come down 1-3 at a time which made them easy pickings. The one I'd be shooting all the way down the hill was usually barely alive by the time he cleared the fire, then it was a simple matter of ganging up on any side kicks he might have. Using Cone of Cold and Winter's Grasp to freeze them in the middle of the fire was fun too. :lol: The knights only had to get involved w/the last 3 or 4 monsters that came down the hill. Most of the time they just stood back there in their line.

 

Then I got called down to the village square and that got a bit hairier, but it was still manageable. I used Threaten and Shield Wall on both Alistair and my Warrior to aggro as many of the mobs as I could, which freed up the villagers to stand back and use their bows. I still lost a good number of the villagers tho, including the mayor. But by the end I was actually just standing around waiting for the final waves to generate. The wait was so long that combat mode actually cut out so I was getting to regenerate HP and Mana between waves and I was sending Leliana out w/her bow to scout and pull mobs.

 

PS - one other thing I forgot about. I have a mace I found a while ago that does decent damage, but it has 2 enchantment (Enchantment!) slots on it. Its not better than either of the swords my guys have, so I changed it into a specialized weapon. Combined the two runes give it +10 vs Undead. Leliana has a bow from the Dalish chapter that does +4 vs Undead too IIRC.

Yeah, I got Arcane Warrior from the lower ruins, along with the Juggernaut armor. Having trouble retrieving the other Juggernaut pieces though--Dalish was my first destination, so I'm still fairly low level.

I didn't even bother trying them. Figured I'd come back later. On my way thru to the temple I triggered the one gravestone that the game would actually let you mess with and got my butt handed to me. A Revenant and 4 skeletons went thru me like a hot knife thru butter. 2 of my guys were down before I even got to activate my second round of talents. :blink:

 

I love those kind of surprises in games like these! :lol:

 

I'm beginning to realize how good the cold tree is...

I found a ring of +10% Cold Damage for Morrigan and love it. Along with the War Mage Amulet from DA:Journeys she's doing +15% damage with her 2 combat cold spells, and I hadn't even considered the extra damage that would apply to the constant spell that adds cold damage to my party's weapons.

Im not sure where i got champion, somewhere in the dwarven city i think.

I cheated and went to Best Buy over lunch. The game guide book says that you can learn Champion from the Arl after completing the Redcliffe chapter.

 

I seriously considered buying the book, but decided to wait. I usually like to solve these kinds of games myself, but having those lists of weapons, spells, skills, etc is awfully tempting. But then I went next door to Books-A-Million and they had the collector's edition game guide. :lol: Its hard cover, w/the same content as the normal book, but it also has some extra background fiction too. $10 extra for a hardcover isn't that bad, but $35 for a book I won't read all the way through is still a lot of money. :unsure:

 

My wife is going back in for surgery tomorrow morning tho, so I'll need something to do. It'll either be reading that book or playing Puzzle Kingdoms.

How many hours did it take you to play thru? You can find it on your character's screen. Click the Heroic Accomplishments button and I think its at the bottom of that screen.

It ended up being around 45 hours total play time. I have since discovered that the other party members will give you bonus side missions if their trust-o-meter is high enough.

 

My second time around I'm doing a bloodmage/healer combo with a tank, morrigan and leliana (bard/ranger) 2 mages make very short work of most groups. The living Bomb spells are so fun. Just have to stay at a distance and let the tank soak up the damage. I'm not playing it on full damage from AoE spells yet. Might do that on my next round.

 

I have to hand it to Bioware, the relationships in this game can get very complex with 3 companions per gender. Yes, there is one that you can get with each gender. No, I'm not going to spoil it, but I was very surprised at Bioware and i salute them for it.

 

Yea, that tactics setting, i didn't play with it much on my first trip, but I had it set on no party damage from AoE spels just to get a handle on it. Still some fights where very difficult. I have missed games that really make you think about how your going to clear out rooms.

My wife surprised me with DA two nights ago, and all day yesterday it was on the XBox 360. I started with a Dalish elf rouge, in the Ranger specialization. I had thought at several points to start a second game with a different character, but now I'm commited and want to see this one through!

 

No glitches, and overall it is really fun. I do have to agree with some other posters that it would be nice to have the main PC have some spoken dialog, and it would be nice to have known about all the locked chests at the beginning, but more knowledge for round 2!!!

I think the reason most people are complaining of the difficulty is that they don't really try to have much synergy between the various characters.

 

My first completion I had some very difficult fights. Like loading 15-20 times and frustration was very high. This round with an understanding of how things work in the game, I have torn the same groups apart. Now, there are still some times where i walk around a corner and get slaughtered. But it just makes me look at some better tactics and synergy.

 

I have read that some people are basically soloing the game already using various combos. Have heard that the Arcane Warrior and Blood Mage combo does insane damage and is nearly unstoppable.

 

My next trip i think I'm going to play another rogue with ranger spec, and have both my other rogues pick it up and just keep Wynn as a healer only and see how that goes. Just sounds like too much fun :P

My wife's surgery went great guys. Too great in fact. LOL The last two times we've gone through this she slept for basically 3 1/2 days straight after the surgery, so I was figuring that I'd get lots of time to play DA over the weekend and then work from home on Mon/Tues. But they did a different procedure this time and it wasn't anywhere near as intensive, so she's been up and (somewhat) about since we got home on Friday. So I've barely touched the game since then. Got in 2 hours last night tho, so now I'm itching to play again. ::):
