Lastman
The hardware store has become my second home during my remodeling and one of my friends there is interested in Warlord since I won't start Hordes or Warmachine. Are Warlord Starter Boxed Sets still available? I like Razig and Nefoskar but I have so many Reven already (because Ben Siens made a lot of them) I might just go with that. Gus Landt
We do not have starter boxes for Warlord at this time. We continue to consider it though, and may come out with something in the future. Your best bet is to post what factions you are considering (like you just did) and one of the Warlord 2 players will be sure to chime in with a recommended starting army to purchase. Razig is not in the Warlord 2 core rulebook, so I wouldn't suggest starting with them. They will be out sometime in the next 6 months though. For Nefsokar, do you prefer the undead half or the human half of the army?
Lastman
For Nefsokar, do you prefer the undead half or the human half of the army? I like the undead. I already have a few of the Khamsin 3-packs but I have no idea how many are in a troop (or squad). I'm guessing 6 or 9 are not enough to fill out a squad. Is it possible to mix the undead and humans when fielding Nefsokar? I am ordering the Warlord 2 rulebook today so I'll be able to ask informed questions as soon as that arrives. Gus Landt
You can mix living and undead no problem. I only ask because in my experience, people typically prefer to go all one or the other. Any idea how large of a force you are looking to build with them?
Lastman
Any idea how large of a force you are looking to build with them? I'm going to inventory the models I own, but I'm guessing I have 20 or 25 figures. They might be all grunts for all I know, but I reckon I can proxy leaders until the rulebook arrives with my options. I ordered it today, along with a mummy cleric holding a jar, just to be sure I have a boss type. Would 20 models approximate 500 points? I know they have different point values but I'm just looking for a ballpark so I can tell the other guy who's going to play about how many dwarves he'll need. He's gung-ho about this too and already has a bunch of dwarves picked out. I will not let him use my griffin--can that be a proxy for a sphinx? cutebutpsycho
As long as the base size is the same and it's a reaper model, proxy away!
Gus Landt
20-25 models would probably be a full 1000 point army! Play around with the (rudimentary) army builder on reapergames: http://www.reapergames.com/warlord.php?display=ArmyBuilder Nefsokar - 1002 points Troop 1 Khufu Sokar's Prophets Tomb Guard x 8 Awakened Mummy x 4 Troop 2 Mi'sher Khamsin Dervish x 6 Troop 3 Sokar's Avatar
Lastman
That army builder is awesome. My friend and I are eager to start playing. We are noobs so we can't do Black Lightning-caliber demos, but if we just play for fun at the two remaining game stores in Chicago maybe we can attract some new players. The book should arrive in two weeks or so according to the USPS delivery estimate. That'll give me time to get some painted. I have enough to field a Reven army too. And probably Dwarves. And Necropolis.
Becky
I second Warlord starter box sets! I have a few friends that play and I know they would help me pick out things but the box sets would be incredibly helpful for newbs like myself. I really love the Wood Elf stuff. Army of trees, for the win!
Shakandara
Army of trees, you say? Elves - 999 points Troop 1 Selwyn Vale Swordsman x 5 Troops 2-4 Gildan, Vale Ranger Faery x 4 Troops 5-8 Mossbeard the Treeman Luck Stone 12 Faeries and 4 giant stompy trees... not saying it would win, but it would a blast to watch! EDIT: FWIW, I'd love to see a return of a boxed set of some kind. ~v Edited October 20, 2009 by Shakandara

Army of trees, for the win! Starter Boxes in "Point" denominations would be attractive I think. "Elven 500 pt. Army" or "Elven 1000 pt. Army" and just make sure they are good to put together for a "1500 pt. Army" and that gives the consumer three options for thier faction. Veronus I think id rather have 2 different 500 point box sets, So buying both would give you 1000 points, but then there are still warlords, more elites and solos to buy. It would let you customize a little more. -Sin
Gus Landt
Would the goal of 500 point boxes be for having something to sell a new player? What MSRP are we aiming for? I'd have to see a few suggestions before I could give a cost savings estimate, but you can figure about 10%. Keep in mind that we sell army packs of 9 minis for $40. These sets would not be able to provide a better financial value than the army packs. The challenging part would be making 500 point lists that play well and are the same price cost. Also, should they avoid magic (so new players can learn the melee and ranged systems) or should they be certain to include magic to show it off? How many troops? Solos? Just my 2 cents, but I think a 750pt force would be a bit more versatile. My first game was 750 points. All the facets of the game were represented, and it rocked. And, Gus, magic is so smooth in WL that it doesn't necessarily have to be left out. There could also be 1 solo, say an assassin or something. A decent sized army pack would be perfect for us new players to start new armies–I've built a decent Elf army. I'd like to put in a request for Razig myself. You know, just sayin. vutpakdi
I thought that the packs made for GenCon were nice starter sets. Smaller point value (say < 500) is better than higher for snagging people who are just evaluating the game. Once you get to higher point values, you're more likely to run counter to what someone wants their builds to be. Ron
