Houston Paint Club, *Last* Sunday of the Month, 1-4 PM

Recommended Posts

I've been hoping that we could start a monthly paint club meeting for Houston painters. Nothing really serious, just a group of mini painters getting together to paint at the same time one afternoon a month. I'm rather envious of paint clubs in other cities, and I figure that we could use one of our own.

Very graciously, DJ has agreed that Asgard Games (5016 Kirby Drive, Houston, TX) will host a paint club on the Last Sunday of each month, from 1-4 PM. Generally bring your own minis, brushes, and paints though I may bring a few Reaper "Paint and Take" minis, brushes, and paints if I get enough interest from people who have never painted before or haven't painted much. All skill levels welcome, and I would be happy to provide some basic instruction in introductory techniques.

We're meeting on the 31st of January, from 1-4 PM. I hope to see you there.

Ron

Man, you have no idea how much I've been wanting something like this in Houston. I'll do my very best to see that I can be there.

...and as a side note, this is my fist post here ::D: I post a good bit over at CMON but I've only been lurking here for nearly two years. You finally pulled me out of the shadows with this thread!

Due to a slight mixup when creating the calendar, we have moved the date from the 3rd Sunday of the month to the 4th Sunday of the month.

So, we'll be meeting on the 22nd of November and not the 15th of November. Sorry for the mixup. Future dates will be on the 4th Sunday of each month (just to keep things easy to remember).

I won't be able to make November's meeting, but I'm definitely going to try to make it once things calm down a bit at home. Great idea!

Dulineal, I hope that you can join us soon!

Everyone else, I'm looking forward to seeing you this Sunday!

Wasn't able to make it today. ::(:

Had some car trouble and had to get that taken care of. Just got done and if I leave from Katy now, I won't be there until around 3:15-3:30. You guys doing it again soon?

Sorry that you couldn't make it.

Yes, we're meeting again on the 27th of December (4th Sunday in December). Not a great day, but keeping it the same day every month should help things.

I have been looking for an even like this to learn to paint; I can't wait!

What place in Houston sells Reaper Master series paints? I'd like to look at them in person before I choose which shades I'd like.

Also, does anyone know any good guides on brush bristle types (that would distinguish between gold and white taklon, sable, nylon, plastic, synthetic)?

Thanks!

Best method I know is to read the handle of the brush; many brands will say what is what. If not there, maybe on the rack where the brush is sold? You can bet that a good kolinsky sable brush will say so on it somewhere - that is a selling "point". IIRC the various colours of taklons are fancy-sounding names for nylon, which accounts for pretty much all the synthetics I'm familiar with. If it gets a hooked tip within a few hours' use no matter how well you clean and condition it, it's probably a synthetic brush. But not all naturals are sable, and not all sables are kolinsky (and not all kolinskies are on par with ie. Series 7's - I'm looking at you, W&N Cirrus line)...

Have fun at your paint club, you lucky so-n-so's. Wish there was something like that around here...

Third Planet (nearby to Asgard) carries some paints, but honestly their selection is pretty limited. I do not recall if Nan's (also close by) has any MSPs. However, I know Ron will have his case of paints with him, as will I. You are welcome to peruse what we have, and I'm sure Will & DJ will be glad to order anything that you want.

Also, I'll again be hosting Warlord on Sunday the 27th to coincide with Paint Club. Come join us for one or the other or both!

Nan's has some of the MSPs, but I'm a little wary about how long they've been there.

Much better to just try out some of the ones that Vince and I will have. I'll also bring some of my Pro Paints if you want to try those as well. We probably won't have the entire MSP line between us, but we'll probably cover most of it.

I'm glad that you'll be joining us.

I'll look for my brush guide resources. We can also chat a bit more about brushes in a little over a week.
