Jabberwocky
Here you go! I had a good time with the chains--I found them in a modeling store and I think were made for a model ship of some sort. The granite headstone was done using Laszlo's technique. I used the Stone Gray Triad, with some Leather white for the highlights and black for a bit of deepest shading. I also speckled the stone with a toothbrush with VMC White, VMC Black, and the Stone Triad. This was my first time using the MIG pigments for a bit of weathering on the robe and I think I'll be picking up some more of that stuff... I tried to give the illusion of floating as well. As always, comments and critiques wanted! And the linky if you wish: http://coolminiornot.com/235702

Moderator TaleSpinner Posted November 3, 2009 Moderator Share Posted November 3, 2009 Well done, Jab. I really like how the chains turned out. I also like the way the rust appears to have soild the cloak. The tomb stone is good work. My only nit is that the orange eyes and mouth don't really hold my attention. They perhaps need some OSL effect to sell them or something. Otherwise, I love it. You're really pumping these out this year. Take care, Andy
scotty kahn
Amazing piece, and those chains really take it to the next level. The weathering and rust are excellent.
olliekickflip
Hey Jab, very nice. I like how you added the chains...I think they really bring this model to life! the rust is very well done and believable and I like the weathering on the cape!! As for a critique, I feel like the colors clash a little bit...or just arent jelled together as well as they could be. For starters the yellow girlie man dress competes for dominance over the face...maybe if it was darker or something. I just find my eyes pulled down constantly by it. Also I don't get the "death" feeling with the warm colors on the specter itself but thats just me. I feel warm and a little happy instead of dead and cold and dreary!! Also the headstone kinda sticks out like a sore thumb cuz it is cool and everything else is warm. I like that you have the contrast of cool and warm its just a little too "in your face" you know. I think if you took some cool dark blue colors and added them into the robe in your deepest shadows (well actally everything on the spectre)...and also in the base itself, it would go a long way to keep the cold/warm contrast but also tie everything together! That and darken the girlie man dress-robe thingy!! Anyways, thats my .02. Oh and paint that flock!! I use thinned down washes to tint the flock...it makes it look less like flock and a lot more interesting!!

Hells_Clown
How did you do the chains? They look great.
Jabberwocky
Thanks everyone for the comments! The chains are pirated from a model ship (HA!) and were done using my new favoritest metallics technique. They were first undercoated/primered with black, based with RMS Honed Steel, washed with some GW Devlan Mud, then liberally covered with RMS Dark Skin. Next, I took RMS Rust Brown and focused mostly on where the chains link together followed by some RMS Clear orange to take it up in a few spots selectively. I then washed the Clear Orange with some thinned Devlan Mud just a bit to tone it down. Finally, I got some VMC Silver and hit some of the upper links (just a pinpoint spot) to bring back some of the metallics and get some nice, tight, bright highlights. As for OKF--"girlie man dress"?? Ouch--I love it!! Thanks for the no-holds-barred critique!! It's critiques like that I've been looking for--detailed explanations as to why my spectre is the laughing stock of the graveyard . Thanks again, man. Sigh...I wish I had more time to work on this piece before the contest deadline.
