I got the answer I was secretly looking for - in the average 1000 point army, how many models do people typically field?

I expected the answer to be 20-25. That was exactly right. ::):

With only 1 or 2 exceptions, everyone's 1000 point army has 20-25 models. I find that to be astounding. Each datacard ranges from 5 to 244 points. Armies can be made with as few as 10 models or as many as 70 models (estimates). Yet nearly everyone ends up at 20-25 models.

I doubt many of the people who have posted their lists here were thinking of # of models when building their lists. People don't think "whoops, only have 18 models, better add 2 more". 20-25 just happens naturally.

This info is useful for a number of reasons, one of which is having some sort of answer to the question "how much does it cost to play Warlord". I can say $100-$150 with something to back that up. ::):

Makes me wonder how an army like this would perform:

Crusaders - 1000 points

Troop 1

Duke Gerard

Holy Armor

Finari, Justicar

Halbarad, Priest of Aurellius

Templar Knight x 9

War Dog x 2

Troop 2

Sir Brannor, Justicar

Templar Unforgiven x 9

Troop 3

Guardian Beast of Aurellius

The idea here is to have 20-25 models, fully utilizing two 9-model army packs.

Or perhaps:

Crusaders - 994 points

Troop 1

Duke Gerard

Templar Knight x 9

Troop 2

Sir Brannor, Justicar

Justicar x 9

Troop 3

Celestial Lion

Both of those armies would suck because they are Crusaders and not Dwarves. ::P:

Durgam Deepmug

Kara Foehunter

Troop 2

Fulumbar Ironhammer

I actually do intentionally aim for 20. Well, I build the list an put in whatever it is I feel like putting in. Maybe I've got some combination in mind or what have you. But once the list is "done" as in, I've reached 1,000 points or very close to that, I then count up the models. If I'm at 20+ I'll give the list a once-over and re-think the plan, and figure if I think it's a worthwhile list to save and actually play. If I'm below 20 models (if I'm at 18 or 19 I won't worry about it) I think about how the army will face if it gets swarmed. If I don't have more than one or two squishy models, and I feel I have enough staying power to handle getting completely bombarded, then I'll keep the list. But if there's an important group of models that just can't handle b2b with the enemy, I need to put more models in there or else I will be incapable of dictating the flow of battle in a meaningful way, which means those squishies will get hit before they do their job.

Well maybe "incapable" is a bit strong of a word. There's alot of factors that come up in the midst of a game. But it makes me nervous. 20 models generally feels about right.

re: using full army packs as a basis to establish "what it costs to play Warlord." I think armies using full army packs, or very near full army packs, work fine. I think that players with more "complete" collections will tend to find combinations that work really well (Dwarf Warriors with Berserkers in Logan's troop, for example) and will go for those combinations and may never end up using a full army pack's worth of models. But it's a fine place to start.

I will take the opportunity to beat the dead horse and say it's way easier to build a list just how you want it when soldiers are purchased in threes instead of nines, but this comment doesn't even warrant a reply.

Actually, I am conscious of model count when I build a list as well, ad I generally aim for low-20's. I do build lists that are both much larger (40+) and somewhat smaller (mid teens), but those are the exception rather than the rule for me.

Regarding the lists build with using 2 army packs (particularly the Crusader Templar/Unforgiven list), I'd most likely mix the two models across the troops, rather than build a Troop of all of one soldier are the other, but I could see it being reasonably effective.

This list would be fun but illegal.

You can only have a single band of any datacard, so troops 4 and 5 would require leader models. And then also, even though the rangers have mob, they dont have mob leader so therefore they would not be able to lead a mob and troop 3 would be maxed out with 6 models. Obviously it is easy enough to just drop them a couple down and add Neeks, but was just saying based on the current list.....

Troop 3,4,5 were only 6, 18 total. After just glancing at the SAs, I thought Band was saying only one data card per troop. I didn't notice a change to Band on the changes from RC2008 to 2.0 list, but probably just overlooked it. I think I like the old Band better.

In that case I would combine 345 and drop 4 rangers and add Neek and gonda. 51 models
