I figured it would be some sort of a Dire Panther or a Sabretooth critter with some sort of short-range teleport or darkness ability that made 'em harder to hit.... and more likely to get on your flank... maybe some sort of paralyzing gaze ::-)))

Interesting ideas there... Just out of curiosity, "darkness that make them harder to hit" ability.. how would you try to translate that to tabletop where there is no GM or blind games.

You can work it directly into the DV or do it as an SA that under certain conditions their DV is increased. If you want to represent it as a movement ability then an SA that says when contacted by the enemy the miniature can shift in an 180 degree arc to the rear up to 3" and the contacting stand or unit cannot alter its movement to match. Or something along that line anyway. Another SA would be to allow the unit to shift up to six inches (or some such distance) in any direction BEFORE starting their actual movement.

Darkness: Any enemy model that uses a Charge Action to establish b2b contact with a Darkelf Model suffers a -1 penalty to MAV for attacks against that model until the end of their current activation.

 

Basically that first melee attack suffers a penalty. It does not apply if the Darkelf establishes b2b, for Defensive Strikes, or if b2b was established in a previous activation/turn.

 

- OR -

 

Models gain a -1 to RAV for all Ranged Attacks made from greater than 12 inches. Basically a weaker version of Stealth.

I'd say leave the figure in place & give 'em a DV bonus. If the figure is missed due to those extra DV +'s, then use scatter dice to move them to another cardinal point adjacent, but out of attach range of the enemy figure.

 

That or use one of the other suggestions.

 

Let's say it has an innate 3" darkness template that it can cast once a game, giving all except for those that can see at darkness a -1 or -something to MAV and RAV within, into, or out of the sphere.

Seems like a spell to me. And perhaps it's a spell that leader models get innately due to a faction ability. Yes Drow can all cast darkness as a supernatural ability, but this is Warlord not D&D and having every last soldier model be capable of buffing the defense of itself and a few friends seems pretty powerful AND a headache to keep track of.

 

But each leader having the ability to, say, block LOS entirely + reduce enemy MAV's in a 3" AOE until the end of the next game turn... pretty limited use because in 1k games you probably only have 3-4 uses and it only covers the casting model and possibly a few others. Or perhaps force hits to be re-rolled (think like an anti-weapon master).
