I am looking for some suggestions on a paint holder.

There is a company named Hydra Miniatures that sells a laser cut, stepped, wooden paint rack. They come configured for either "standard" (GW) or dropper (Vallejo, Reaper) bottles. You need to put them together yourself, but that is pretty easy as long as you make sure you get the right parts in the right place, in the right orientation (while it is easy to assemble them correctly, it is unfortunatly just as easy to assemble them incorrectly if you are not careful. I know!). They come in varrying sizes for 40-96 bottles. I really like these and intend to eventually have most of my paint stored in them.

The best other system I have seen is the big Paintier 80 Paint Bottle Carousel. The paint holders are sized for GW bottles, but you can also put the smaller dropper bottles in them, if you want to mix both bottles sizes in the same rack. The War Store carries these racks, although they may also be available from other retailers.

Hope that helps! ^_^

We can help you a little better if you clarify what your specific needs are. Are you looking for something to hold alot of paints, or just a moderate collection? Do you need something that can easily be closed up and carried off to a weekly painting group or not?

I know there's been alot of threads talking about this subject of building your own but I can't find them right now... Off the top of my head I remembered this one . I bet if you PMed ScubaMatt he could send you plans for the one he built. One thing to consider is that it might end up being just as expensive (for supplies) to build your own as it would be to buy something at a store.

If you are looking for something to close up and carry my personal fav is Artbin products. You can get them at many fabric and craft stores like Hobby Lobby and JoAnn Fabrics. This particular model comes in a few different sizes, prices ranging from $7 to maybe $18. The medium one is the perfect height for RMS droppers and holds roughly 100 bottles.

I have a low cabinet to the side of my paint table and just keep my paints in it at all times, with the open lid thrown back against the wall. Just takes a second to snap the lid shut, grab the handle and I'm gone.....

If you're looking for a static holder look at the expanding spice racks. I built a set of stepped shelves using damaged shelving pieces from the home improvement store but you kind of need power tools for that and it's heavy as all get out. Plus every new tier takes up another inch of table space. It's not bad since it's using the space at the back which isn't very useful anyway but once you start looking at all the paints the size can get to be an issue.

I've got my paints in plastic shoebox-size bins with matteboard dividers. They're both portable and relatively accessible.

I'll put in another vote for the PainTier carousels. We have two. They're actually designed to fit a number of different types of bottle; we have FolkArt and Apple Barrel, Citadel/GW, Testors' Acryl (both their Model Masters' bottles and their smaller cubish bottles), Vallejo and, of course, both Reaper lines. All of these are mingling on the same rack. Each carousel rack holds 120 dropper bottles or 80 Citadel or Apple Barrel bottles, so you can get a lot of paint on them. Each tier also has some behind-the-bottle space, though this is really only useful on the very top tier; it's possible to fit about another 20 dropper bottles on the top tier, and there are holes to stand brushes in. That's a lot of storage for only a 12" diameter circle footprint.

The only problems with the carousel that I've had are A)it's hard to clean without emptying it entirely, which is a pain if you've filled it up, and B) if it's filled to capacity, it can be difficult to remove several bottles at a time without knocking several more over; this is easy to avoid if you only pick up one bottle at a time, but can be annoying if you're trying to grab an entire MSP triad at once.

If you like the paintier carousel, then you might like this alternative. I've actually bought two of the multi-tiered ones and either reconfigured or just stacked to get more tiers (use the base of the second tier as the top level of the first tier to get three rotating tiers). They don't have the steps built in so the whole issue of grabbing things at the back while domino-ing everything in front is even more evident...but as a low cost modest carousel, the price is right.

I currently use Midnight Lurker's setup. Everything in an artbin off to the side. What I'm currently using sits on my desktop. If I need to clean up, it's a snap.

Incidentally, I used extruded drywall corner beads (what drywallers use to get those crisp corners in walls) as dividers in the artbin. Some heavy duty scissors are all you need to cut them to length and a quick pass with sandpaper to dull the edges (they can get very sharp!) is all it takes (slightly rebend straight if they kink while cutting).

Thanks everyone. The Paint holder will be for static use sence there are no painting groups here in Kingman, AZ. Currently I have about 80 GW paints and 30 Reaper. I will probable build it because I have a full wood shop (my other pastime) with a CNC machine. I may use the CNC to cut out spots for the paints. Again thanks for the ideals and suggestions.
