Greetings,

After painting the dwarf for my son, a friend (Dalth on these boards) asked me if I would consider painting a mini for his character in the D&D game we've been playing since 2001. Now Dalth and I have been close friends since 1985, and I can only remember painting one other mini for him in all that time (and that was a very basic ninja). Dalth's also the one who got me started in painting in the first place. So I told him I would, and we selected Almaran the Gold to represent his charater, Dalth Ulfgar.

Dalth is an interesting paladin character; the most visually interesting part is his armor, shield, and sword. These are all part of a holy weapon that he quested for that is made up entirely of Dalth's faith in his deity. The stronger his faith (higher the level), the more power it has. Naturally, the sword and armor appear as a blue energy field, but as the paladin gets stronger, he can choose to have the sword and armor look like anything he wants them to.

For this mini, I painted the shield and armor as standard. The sword however is halfway into changing from the blue energy form to a steel blade look. The flames are really whisps of blue faith energy wafting off of the sword as it changes.

I delivered it to Dalth at our game last Saturday. I think he liked it. ^_^

Let me know what you think. Oh and you can see the hour-by-hour WIP too if you like.

Thanks!

This is a bit of a strange mini, photographically speaking. All the metallics were done using the shaded metallic technique, and in person they are quite vibrant and look very good; however, the golds dulled down in the photos. It is almost as if the highlights didn't photograph at all. Weird.

This mini is awesome and you really did a nice pain job.

The bluish reflection on the armor is incredible as if the blue flaming sword was making it shine. The hair and eyes are a success and the basing work complete the presentation perfectly.

Personally, I think the gold is great. It looks worn and tarnished just as it should look on a 15th level Paladin.

Thumbs up!

Ok, so you already know it looks good and you can be proud of it. So, now for the take it a step further critique that I know you secretly want....

Small but significant item in my mind...

Did a great job of having the sword radiate from the sword... but its not reflected in the character.. Hints (as in not overdone) of blue in the armor that is facing the sword, like the right shoulder, his hair and possibly cheek, the hand holding the sword, the "scarf" wafting in the air directly below the sword, the ground on that side.

Thanks. I chose to have the light only coming from the upper surfaces of the sword (white parts). In sighting down the sword, much of what you mentioned was either blocked by something that I did color (for instance the face is totally blocked by the shoulder plate), or beneath the path of the light (such as the stole). It may have been the wrong choice, but it is why it is the way it is and I can't change it now.

Nice fantasy touch to write Latin words in runes. (AMOR = love. FIDES = faith. HONOR = honor.) Cleanly done.

<checks the WIP thread, sees that you explained it there.>

Color me impressed! That you got that before reading the WIP is impressive, since you'd not only need to know runic but also Latin.

Thanks everyone.
