Has anyone used rubber washers for basing?

I've been experimenting using metal washers to base figures and there isn't a fabric store near enough to get any felt to put on the bottoms (to keep from scratching surfaces up), so I bought some rubber washers the same size as the metal ones to put on the bottoms. The problem is that they are thick enough that some figures that were stable on just the metal washer are raised high enough to make them a little top heavy.

So, I'm thinking what would happen if I tried to just use the rubber washer as the base. Hopefully, a good basing compound would hold it rigid for game use. But i have no clue as to how well basing compound or glue will hold to rubber and don't want to waste a good mini experimenting (I could go buy a mini that I have no interest in keeping to experiment with, but that's not how my mind works). So before breaking down and experimenting on my own, has anyone tried using a rubber washer to base a mini on?

I would also guess that a rubbr washer would flex a bit too much, and the model would pretty easily snap off it it, either by bending, freezing, or heating (if left in car).

I would go to Wal-Mart / etc for felt, also, as a solution.

PS - where at in OH?

Thanks to both of you.

I definitely agree... Rubber will flex too much. I assume you're worried about scratching display case wood, etc. Otherwise I've used washers as weights and didn't have a problem with them scratching, but I certainly didn't rub them vigorously on wood or anything :poke: . If you can't find felt you can try a few other things.

  • 1" Avery round labels. Self-adhesive, so they're easy to attach and will protect surfaces. If they start to wear out just add a new one... Use the permanent ones for better adhesion.
  • Rubberized auto undercoating. This is kind of like the Rhino liner stuff for truck beds but thinner. It usually ends up 1/16" thick or so when sprayed. Just spray a batch of washers and you're ready for the next batch of minis.
