I like the purple a lot, but there's something about the tops of the wings being one big block of colour that makes me itch for more complexity. Looking at the geometry of the model I'm not sure what else you'd do, though.

While I'm cluttering up your thread: how did you end up doing the Clear Red highlights? I vaguely remember you talking about painting on white highlights and covering them with Clear Red, but from your post in the Tips/Advice forum I got the impression that you just used the Clear Red directly. I just found some Clear Green at the FLGS and I'm eager to give it a go. ::):

I may add deep red fingers on the upper surface and then glaze them over with purple to give a reddish shadow where the wing fingers go under the skin.

I just tried clear red on its own as the final highlight and was delighted at how much it popped. I don't really feel that I need to take it another level.

Happiness and Joy! :bday:

I just finished painting the dragon itself (there may be a few last minute touches added after basing, but for now it is done)!!!

I cut out and routed the cherry base last night and will be sanding and finishing it tonight. I also cut out and formed the aluminum plate that will be between the dragon and the wood base. Then all I need to do is mount the dragon onto the bases, sculpt the rocks of the base, and paint/finish the base. I figure I'll be totally done by the end of next week.

I'll post photos of where I am at tonight, but I was so happy after painting that I felt like sharing with you. ::D:

Hours 27 through 29:

(The wings are a bit more purple than this in RL, but I can't get the red to look right and the purple to look right at the same time. <_<)

I finished the spines, tipping them with Brick Red, Deep Red, and on the most prominent, Clear Red. Then I painted all of the claws. I'm happy with these except for a few on the trailing edge of the wing I got a bit sloppy on and will have to touch up before the end. I then touched up the rest of the paint job.

On to the base:

I cut out, shaped, and finished a cherry display base for the mini. The Cherry is finished with three coats of Tung Oil. Notice that I left a bare patch on top where the mini will be glued to it. I also cut and shaped a piece of aluminum to act as a base for the mini between the mini and the wood base. I took some brown stuff and formed a wedge with it that I used to stick the mini to the aluminum. This wedge fixed the natural lean that the mini has which I really don't like.

Next, I will use epoxy to glue the mini to the wood base. Then I will drill two holes through the mini base, the aluminum, and pilot holes into the cherry through which I will secure the mini, aluminum and cherry base together with screws. After that, I will sculpt rocks over the screw heads and aluminum base, tape off the wood, and paint the base. I'll try to show all this in sequence as I go along.

Have a good day,

Andy

Hours 30 through 32:

(By the way, all pictures at this stage are taken without my light box and the color is likely off.)

I glued the base to the wood with epoxy. Once the putty and epoxy was cured, I drilled two holes through the miniature base, aluminum base, and into the wood, at angles. In the center, I secured everything together with an 1-1/4" coarse thread screw, seated into epoxy and the wood. Between the back legs, I applied epoxy to this smaller hole and seated in a finishing nail as a pin. I also applied more epoxy around the mini base. In theory, the three bases are now one and will never separate.

Once the epoxy was dry, I masked the cherry base to protect it and then sculpted the rocky base. I indended this to look like many of the rock falls, stream sides, and shorline of the North Shore of Lake Superior of which I am very familiar.

Once dry, I'll prime and paint the base, then add the flocking and plants and all will be finished.

Kudos for bravery in getting anywhere near the painted model with a coarse thread screw and drill!

 Yeah, that was a bit nerve wracking. Drilling the holes was the most dangerous part, as I was very close to the wings with the spinning drill chuck.
