January Roll Call

Recommended Posts

Finished off the exchange mini last night (basing at least, she has been done for over a week now). Still have 16 28mm French Light Infantry to finish by Saturday. Oh and, of course, I started a unit of 14 28mm French Curassier just because I didn't really have enough to do. 64 15mm British also have skin and coats now because I could.

Website for Genghis Con is http://denvergamers.org

Just two weeks away now and lots of minis to prime.

So, I said:

2 Reaper Zombies with chainsaws

1 Reaper "monster" for the exchange

(worked on both of those last month, but my only painting time the last week and some was at the GW store, and they frown on bringing non-GW figs in to paint.)

Ogre Kingdoms - base colors on 12 bulls, 4 ironguts, 4 leadbelchers, assemble and prime 24 gnoblars

Skaven - assemble, prime 40 clan rats, 20 plague monks, 2 rat ogres, 6 giant rats, 3 packmasters, warlock

FoW

Brits - 8 tanks - try for base colors

Soviets - I have 7 T-34s that have been almost finished for who knows how long. I really should finish them off.

DBA armies - I want to finish a couple bases of horse archers, in 15mm. Should only take a night, if I actually sit down and do it.

So how did I do?

The Chronoscope zombies with chainsaws and the exchange monster got finished. I did not get any painting on the Ogres done, but the Gnoblars got assembled and primed. I got 34 of the clanrats assembled and primed (the command for the two squads did not get done yet). One rat ogre is primed, as are the six giant rats. The plague monks, warlock, packmasters, other giant rat, and the FoW & DBA stuff got pretty much ignored.

So, I am at 3 of my goal of 150, which is not exactly a great start, but on a per month basis, I am way ahead of last year.

Technically, I fully completed nothing in January, not even December carryover. I made some progress, though. My experiment with speed/army painting on some skeletons was successful. It went something like this: Based except for static grass, spray primed black, basecoated, highlighted, brushed on Army Painter Quick Shade (Dark Tone), applied static grass. They look pretty good, I think, and the speed is a dramatic improvement for me - from probably two hours each to maybe a half hour to forty-five minutes, each. Time spent was scattered and I did not log it, but it definitely seems faster than previous attempts. They are shiny and need a good shot of matte varnish before calling them done.

The exchange mini is also done except for sealing, pics and shipping.

I also failed to meet my goal, but I did finish a High Elf archer unit last night (just in time! 10 figures) and a 3 pack of Otherworld Shriekers and Violet Fungus. So technically I finished 13 figures for the month.

I also finished assembly on 10 Norman spearmen (from Gripping Beast -- each needed a spear and a sword hilt attached), and basecoated and washed the flesh on 12 Crusader Late Romans. I also did the flesh tones on 24 15mm Old Glory Hastatii.

Finished 02330: Templar Knight (Note: That guy doesn't have thumbs! I found it very distracting, for some reason.)

Finished the rest of my batch of Valhallans for the month.

Finished a Psyker for the Imperial Guard army.

It was a total of 16 minis finished that month, which I think is probably some kind of record for me.

I remember one of the Perry sculpted archers for the 2nd generation Bretonnians was missing a thumb too. It was a nice figure (I converted it to carry a buckler too, real easy to do!) but the lack of a thumb sort of killed it for me...

Well, I had plans:

  • Get a painting/craft area set up. This involves a lot of cleaning that needs to get done anyway.
  • Seal the two familiars I've painted, and give them some sort of base, even if it is just sand.
  • Finish painting the figure I've had in progress since August.

It turns out the lamp I was planning to use in my painting area (one with multiple bulbs on adjustable arms) died when I moved. I've got a table set up, but no light.

Which means I didn't get much painting done.

I did work on the figure I've had since August, and discovered just how hard a bright red skirt is to paint. It's now too bright, and all the highlights just aren't visible.

However, I did learn that it is very fun to paint with an audiobook playing, and I'm now planning on making Terry Pratchett audiobooks and painting a weekly occurrence.
