dks
Following my show-off of the gnome sorcerer, Corim the Kestrel, here is a painted version of my recent female gnome sculpt. I didn't have a particular character in mind for her, but she needed to be cute but tough. Since I used strong primary colors on Corim, I planned to use more muted secondaries on Elliwyn: strawberry blonde ("orange") hair, some green accents, and a lavender-purple tabard. The purple looked too cold, though, so I changed it to pink before adding the freehand in the deeper rosy red. And although I quickly decided on the dark green edge for the shield, the center of the front face was first deep red (too attention-grabbing!), then pink (it looked like a slice of watermelon!), and finally the current black-brown. I added the leaf freehand to echo her sculpted necklace. Her hairstyle is called "Crisscross Fountain", as presented in a book of fancy hairstyles that I bought for reference. It's fun and unique without being impractical for adventuring. I'll post individual views to the Inspiration Gallery, too. Derek
JimL
Gorgeous! The shield and the hair are my favorite parts as well as the detail on all of the fiddly bits.
Wilwarin
Beautiful job! She's adorable :) I love that shield and the highlights are amazing; as always.
pez5767
Very nice sculpt and paint Derek. I really like the base also. Your sharing the back and forth process you went through on her is nice to hear also. The Golrick mercenary I recently posted was a bit of back and forth himself. Thanks for showing. MamaGeek
Gorgeous work, both on the sculpt and the painting. You always use such beautifully muted colors. They're very inspiring. Thanks for sharing!
Sanael
Post this to the Inspiration Gallery, indeed! She's gorgeous! I can't wait to paint this sculpt...now I'll really have to start thinking about the colors I want to use for her...I, too, appreciate reading your thoughts on color selection/correction; it makes me feel better about doing that myself. Elliwyn is easily my favorite of your sculpts that I've seen in-hand, Derek, and this is one of my favorite paint-ups you've posted as well. Thanks for continually giving inspiration. By the by...I love all your gnomes; when will you finish out the basic adventuring party? As I see it, We've got a fighter in Elliwyn, an arcanist in Corim, and either a rogue (or perhaps a cleric of Garl Glittergold) in Ingrid. So we need another to fill the last slot, either a clear-cut rogue or a clear-cut cleric!

dks
Thanks for the praise, folks. Sometimes the colors all fall into place easily, sometimes there are hiccups (like on this one), and sometimes I'm so stuck that I need to do a color study before applying the first brushstroke to the figure. @Sanael: As for a complete adventuring party of gnomes, Reaper has a piece of nice concept art for a gnome paladin that I hope to get around to, later this year. In 4th-edition terms, that would cover a defender (the new paladin), leader (Elliwyn = bard), striker (Ingrid = rogue or ranger, or Corim = sorcerer), and controller (Corim = wizard, or Ingrid = invoker). Or you could find other ways to shuffle them around. Looking forward to seeing other color schemes! For example, as soon as I finished this one, I immediately had a vision of a dark-haired Elliwyn dressed in twilight blues and greens. I'll have to save that for another time. (And I remembered Froggy's Show-Off post of a converted Elliwyn as a sci-fi villain. He said that having such a cutesy name made her rebel and turn bad.) MamaGeek
Hey, Derek, would you consider making a blending Tutorial / WIP sometime? I am such an admirer of your style. I would love to get some better insight into your technique. Aaron (Olliekickflip) posted a blending tutorial a while back that provided a huge boost to my personal painting skill, and I'm sure helped out others as well. I can only imagine what you could offer us!
