HALP! GW Tomb Spider

I need help getting scuttles the tomb spider finished.  I think I've got a nice patina-like scheme built up for him, but he just doesn't pop, I could use some help.

I'm also not sure what colors to do for the particle gun, and the optics.  Any thoughts on those, or markings?

He's also really tough to photograph.  There's layer and layer of MSP metallic emerald, ruby, gold, and a weird green Folk Art color that goes on gold.  Plus some tamiya clears, MSP clear green, and MSP inks.  MSP jungle green and black mixed for the darklining.

Any suggestions or critiques welcome!

No real suggestions, but I'll say you really made a "silk purse from a sow's ear." The Tomb spider is IMHO the single worst model in the Necron range (my two are still semi-complete because I hate the figure so much). There's rumor that sometime this year the Tomb Spider may get a new plastic kit. If that happens, IMHO there will be much rejoicing (on my end at least...)

Thanks Damon, send 'em to me and I'll repose them for you! I agree that the standard cast is awful, it looks like a hairclip. But with a re-pose of the legs, I think they can look really cool (I actually like the Destroyer least in the range).

Looks great so far!

As to suggestions: For the optics I would go with a kinda glowing red. Paint it like a gem, dark red base highlighting up to an orange color. As for the particle gun, I'm not sure what the fluff is but you could go with heat or scorch marks near the end with some sort of lighting effect at the end of the barrel. The effect could be a bright green or even a whitish blue (though that might clash too much with collors you already have). Color choices aren't my strong suit but those are some suggestions.

I'll agree with Dilvish's suggestions re: gun and optics. For more pop on the body, here are my thoughts, with the caveat that I have no knowledge of WH40K/necron fluff/army schemes/etc.

Start looking for places to highlight brightly. Your patina is really nice, but it's a little too all-encompassing, IMO. Find those points of wear that will be rubbed or scratched into brightness; the heads of bolts, edges around joints, etc. These are places that should have no patina. Also consider whether everything should be the same metal; what's good for the legs and armor migh not be a good material to build plasma guns, power cables or grabbing claws. My last thought is about the gills on its back. Are those exhaust ports? Maybe a bit of a smoke-stain, something that dulls even the patina to matte might add some depth to the whole thing (or I may be projecting steampunk attributes onto this guy).

As I said, take all my thoughts with as much salt as you need. I do really like the patina (I may have to hunt down some of this Folk Art stuff), and I'll enjoy seeing what you end up doing!

Nice repose!

My only suggestion would be for the green glow.

Highlight a little more in a lighter green color and then find the center of each glowing area and final highlight that area with a mix of the lighter green and a light yellow. It's exactly the same as any tutorial you'll see Privateer press give on how to do the Cryx "necrotic glow".

Use the same light yellow to mix with your metallics to give you a highlight for the edges. Metallic paint is like other paint, just with metal flakes. I encourage people to mix, thin, and shade with it just as they would nonmetallics.
