Anne
Beautiful work! The gnomes look great together! I am curious what do you create the bases out of?
blakbuzzrd
Beautiful work! The gnomes look great together! I am curious what do you create the bases out of? I have the same question. I love the soft, almost impressionistic feel that those bases have.
gaultj
Pure win, as always!
dks
@Anne: Thanks. This base is Greenstuff. I embedded the integral base and added some more earth/rock around it. Elliwyn, Ingrid, and Corim (the 3 gnomes that I've sculpted and painted) step out from hiding and speak up: "Although we appreciate your praise, and although any of us would enjoy a jaunt in the sky with Miss Glitter, please note that Roderic is technically a halfling." They point to Roderic's curly hair, sideburns, and hairy feet. @blakbuzzrd: Yes, I justify my fast but scruffy painting as "impressionistic", too. morganm
I love the correlation between the personality you show for Glitter in your post and the final shot with her regal, haughty, posture. Oh, and the painting is fabulous as well =)
JimL
Wow, amazing job. I agree with MamaGeek, this model is very small and to hit all the details that well is very impressive. Your blending and highlighting is off the chart.
awong
Glitter and Roderic are amazing, especially for the size that they are! I especially like the almost translucent effect you get at the tips of Glitter's wings. Your technique is truly amazing. (in a whisper...but Shaelin is still one of my all time favorite paint-ups ever!). -AW
TollHouseGolem
Outstanding sculpts and fantastic paint jobs! Is mini sculpting a fun profession? Seems like it could be, but I imagine there are a lot of factors and pressure not seen by the average Joe.
Warlady
Fantastic! I love the colors and the detail, especially the freehand on the cloak lining. As always, your painting is an inspiration. And this is yet another model I've been fence-sitting on acquiring, and now will have to get, having seen your painted version. Thanks for sharing! cutebutpsycho
Derek, they're simply stunning! I always enjoy seeing you paint the miniatures you sculpt. You do a fabulous job on everything you paint, but when you paint your sculpts, they really work so well together (which only makes sense seeing as you sculpted them to be painted the way YOU paint). Thank you for sharing! This is still one of my favorite minis <
dks
Thanks again, everyone. @morganm: I imagined that Glitter was staring defiantly at a 30-foot-tall big bad evil monster, with all the self-righteousness that a precocious four-year-old can muster! @awong: The translucent effect is accidental but I noticed it too. Maybe it's that last layer of highlights on the green-glazed wingtips? And thanks for the sustained interest on Shaelin. @TollHouseGolem: I'm just a spare-time sculptor making about 10-12 figures per year -- no, not in the sense of "making a 6-figure salary"! It adds about 10% to my income from my regular job. There's definitely stress with deadlines and frustration when the putty doesn't do what I want it to, but I have the luxury of not depending on sculpting to pay my way. If you really want to know what it's like to sculpt as one's primary occupation, you would have to ask one of the other sculptors, e.g. Bobby Jackson, Jason Wiebe, Bob Ridolfi, Julie Guthrie, Gene van Horne, Tre' Manor (I think he's full-time now), Werner Klocke (allow for differences for living in another country).... @Warlady: Glad to hear that I've tipped the scale in favor of your buying it. Bring on the surge of sales! @cutebutpsycho: Glad you like them, Erin! Thanks again for putting that suggestion into "Minis We Would Like to See" in the first place. This was great fun to design, sculpt, and (eventually) paint. I think my ribs have healed from the boa-constrictor-strength hug that you gave me when you first learned I would sculpt this figure. Lawgiver
I love the rich earthy tones. The level of color depth is shocking.
demonelf3
I bow to you, Derek. Amazing job there, I may have to try painting myself a second one; my first didnt come out nearly so well. Keep up the beautiful work.
