cookjimjr
OK, here is what I got done today, I pretty much got the NMM on the front armor done with the purplish glow. I just need to glaze a little more to smooth it out some. I worked some more on the crystals. I am not that pleased with them, but it was my first attempt at crystals so, it just shows there is room for improvement. I added the glazes to the cloak/cape and decided to go black on the tunic. I put the base coat and some detail on the emblems, I went with red on the armor accents which seem to work well. I added some wood grain to the inside surface of the shield. I also did a little work on on the back of the cloak and shield. I will show you all how that is coming tomorrow night. Jim
Mercius
You are being way too hard on yourself bud, the crystals look great, bang up job....the OSS is looking great, the glazes really helped blend it all together fairly well. The red definatly works for the accents....I like it a lot...good job!
Ferox
All the crystals need, as far as I'm concerned, is toning down the inner highlights a bit and maybe some more shading near the base. Some sharp/thin highlights near the base, as in jewel or gem highlighting, might work... but I don't know how that'd look on faceted crystals. I like where you're going with the armour, but it still looks a bit bright to me about halfway up the shoulders. Maybe I'm just misinterpreting where you're going with it, and I'll really see the light when you finish it off. The purple glow on the NMM is outstanding. cookjimjr
My eyes are bothering me this evening, I've got a lid spasm. Not sure how much painting I will get done. I thought I would let you all know the paints and colors I have been using so far so you do not have to guess. I will tell you up front that I have just started buying newer paints within the last month, so some of the paint I have been using may sound weird to some. I have to use what I have though until I get get a more complete range of the Master Series paints. Here we go: The crystals were done with a base of Citadel/GW Worm Purple, shading of Worm purple mixed with MS Cyan Blue, Highlights of PP Gemstone Purple mixed with GW Skull White. I have since added a few glazes of Gemstone Purple mixed with a touch of the Cyan Blue. Benedikt's Front Armor NMM was base coated with GW Codex Grey (Without crystal glow on the armor I would have done the standard steel NMM from there), Shading with the crystal glow was done with the same combination as the shading of the crystals. The mid-tone was done with the Worm Purple and Gemstone Purple. I then added skull white to that mixture to go into the highlight color. I shied away from all out white due to the glow of the crystals, but may add small areas in the transitions between the front and the top of the armor. I have done several glazes of MS Icy Grey to smooth the transitions and to bring out a look of the glow in the steel. The cape was base coated with (don't laugh) Testers Acryl, Insignia Red. The purple shading was done in a Insignia Red/Worm Purple/Cyan Blue mixture. The highlights were done in PP Firehawk Red. I then glazed with the thinned Insignia Red to tone down the high lights and lighten the purple glow. The accents on the armor and the symbols were painted in Firehawk Red, then the purple glow was added similar to what is on the cape. The tunic was first painted with GW Chaos Black the highlights of Icy grey/Gemstone purple were added. The inner shield is MS tanned leather with thinned P3 Bloodtracker Brown to make the start of the grain. I still have some detail work to do on the front, but will be working to get the back side of Benedikt up to where the front is. You will not see any glow on the back side armor and shield so, they should look more like steel. His cape will look red. I hope that catches that part up. If I am able to get any painting done tonight I will post it tomorrow night. You all have a good evening. Jim
Mini Killer
Your work is looking good. I like the crystal's and the red brings the figure to gather. Thanks for the run down on what colors you are useing.
Mercius
I bought some Testor's Acryl white brush on primer, because it was the only primer my hobby shop carried except for spray stuff....man does that stuff stink, talk about a gloppy mess. The red looks awesome though, so either the actual paint is better or you made it work.
cookjimjr
Well my eye lid finally did stop twitching, so I was able to get some more done. Here is the first photos of the back of Benedikt and other than a few minor details I am almost finished with the front as seen in the second photo. I am not sure the photos show what this really looks like well enough, but I like what I see in person. I should have this finished tomorrow night and will post it here first before posting it in the Show it Off forum. Questions and Comments welcome again. cookjimjr
I am done! Yeah! This one was quite a handful, but I think I got what I expected. Last night I finished up the details and glued Benedikt on the base. Today I filled in where I had gaps with my snow mixture and then shaded the new snow when dry. I had to glaze the red on the back of the cloak because I felt the contrasts were a little too much. I painted the edge of the base, then sprayed on 3 coats of Testers Dull Coat. After that I went over all of the NMM with 2 coats of Testers brush-on Gloss Coat. I also went over the crystals with 1 coat of gloss coat. I spent the rest of the day trying to get the best pictures I could. I tried different lighting and backgrounds. I hope they do him justice. Thank everyone for following along. I hope you enjoyed the process. Jim
Ferox
DUDE! Wow, that came together really well.
Mercius
This is my fav mini from you so far, great shading, great highlights, the pics show most of the detail, they still seem a bit washed out, but they show all the detail well. The crystals look so good, and I think the added gloss to the NMM added a bit of a realism to it...overall great stuff, this one tops edge of chaos for me, and I thought that one was really great also! cookjimjr
Thank you for the comments. I Really tried to get better photos, I am learning a new camera and I was trying out the shadow box I made. I took some more late last night and I think they turned out a little better than these. I will have those posted in the Show it Off forum sometime today. Now I am getting ready for the "BIG" project I was going to do for ReaperCon, but since the Tax Man got me this year, I am going to make it for the next Con being held here in the Denver area. Maybe next year for ReaperCon. Anyway, I will need some help on that one with ideas and maybe techniques. I will sketch and scan a picture of my Idea, then let you all at it. I am sure we will be able to come up with something. Jim
